Aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush arrives in waters near Iran

A third U.S. aircraft carrier and the warships escorting it arrived in waters near Iran on Thursday, officials said, significantly amplifying the military force at President Donald Trump’s disposal as he pressures the government in Tehran to surrender its nuclear program, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and agree to end a weeks-long war that has destabilized much of the region. Hull funeral director Robert Bush admits preventing 30 burials – as families say he should ‘rot in jail’ | UK News

Hull funeral director Robert Bush admits preventing 30 burials – as families say he should ‘rot in jail’ | UK News

A funeral director – dubbed “a monster” by his victims – has pleaded guilty to 30 counts of preventing a lawful burial. Dozens of bodies and ashes from different people were recovered from a funeral home in Hull in March 2024. Some of the remains had been stored in varying states of decay for nearly a year after relatives thought they had been buried or cremated. Robert Bush initially denied all the charges, but changed his pleas at Hull Crown Court on Thursday to admit preventing the lawful and decent burials of 30 bodies. The 48-year-old was charged after police found human remains at his premises, including those of four unborn babies. Jenna Bush Hager’s night ends in disaster as Sheinelle Jones comes to the rescue

Jenna Bush Hager left her Today co-host Sheinelle Jones in stitches after the 44-year-old recounted a story of how her friend rushed to her side to assist with an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during their Jamaica trip.  The pair, who are currently on location in the Caribbean country to film Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, revealed that one of their nights ended “in a real bang” thanks to Jenna’s mishap. “Are we going to talk about you being – I had to cut her out of her dress,” Sheinelle teased on-air, before adding that she had been on the dance floor at the time.  “She had to literally get scissors and cut me out of my dress,” Jenna chimed in. “I was pouring sweat, I was panicking. I’m like, SOS.”  “I’m like, Sheinelle, I need you to get here with the scissors ASAP. This is the type of friend I’ve learned I have. She left the dance floor, I believe they were playing Sean Paul, she left, she came,” she recalled.  This is certainly not the …

From Bush to Obama to Trump, White House faith office persists at 25 years

From Bush to Obama to Trump, White House faith office persists at 25 years

(RNS) — Influenced by a prominent pastor and a layman who led a prison ministry, George W. Bush in his first presidential administration embarked on an ambitious goal: to partner the federal government with faith-based groups. The concept already existed during the Clinton administration through a federal welfare reform provision known as “charitable choice” that permitted religious organizations to receive government funding if they allowed their beneficiaries to receive social services without religious coercion. But Bush codified it with what was initially called the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in the White House that included 11 Cabinet-level departments. “Government can hand out money, but it cannot put hope in a person’s heart or a sense of purpose in a person’s life,” became a Bush mantra. In his 2010 memoir “Decision Points,” the former president credited Tony Evans, then the pastor of a predominantly Black church in Dallas, and Chuck Colson, Watergate felon-turned-evangelical advocate for prisoners, with helping him see the value of faith-based programs receiving government support. Now, 25 years later, all the Democratic …

‘I was mesmerised by Kate Bush and the Smurfs, so I had great taste’: Diane Morgan’s honest playlist | Diane Morgan

The first song I fell in love withBaggy Trousers by Madness. I remember thinking it was the most brilliant thing I’d ever heard, partly because there was a man in huge trousers suspended from the ceiling playing a saxophone on Top of the Pops. That probably helped. It was hilarious! The first single I boughtThe Smurfs? I think I just asked for it rather than went out and bought it myself because I was three. Apparently I was mesmerised by both Kate Bush and the Smurfs, so I had great taste in music. The first single I bought with my own pocket money was probably I Should Be So Lucky, because I hadn’t become acquainted with the Fall yet. The song I inexplicably know every lyric toIt’s weird when lyrics you don’t particularly like find their way into your memory. I know more music hall songs than I should for my age, because we were forced to sing them in drama school. I also remember the lyrics to the Hold a Chicken in the Air song from Spitting …

From Bush Sr to Trump: the risks, lessons and legacy of US interference in the Middle East | US-Israel war on Iran

From Bush Sr to Trump: the risks, lessons and legacy of US interference in the Middle East | US-Israel war on Iran

This is the third Gulf war and umpteenth outbreak of conflict since the United States took over as the dominant power and influence in the Middle East at the end of the cold war. And it is arguably the most dangerous, consequential and confused of them all. The destruction and chaos spreading across the region confirms the Middle East’s status as the world’s pre-eminent crisis factory, but it also raises questions as to how US presidents so often declare they are ending US interference in the region, only to be lured back in. Since the second world war the US has set out to oust a government in the Middle East on average once a decade, and on almost every occasion it has left the country, and the US, worse off as unexpected consequences eventually emerge. As Donald Trump embarks on yet another regime change – this time in Iran, a country of 90 million people – the sense of foreboding is profound. Already the timelines are extending, and the sense is growing by the …

Column: Clinton, Bush, Obama and Biden, please speak out against Trump

Column: Clinton, Bush, Obama and Biden, please speak out against Trump

Where are the statesmen when the state is under siege by the current head of state? I’ve been mulling that question, hardly for the first time, but on three occasions just in the last few days. On Monday, the federal holiday celebrating George Washington’s birth, former President George W. Bush posted an essay on the first U.S. president as part of a civic project commemorating the nation’s 250th year. Simply by hailing Washington for traits that Donald Trump utterly lacks — humility, integrity, dignity, self-restraint, willingness to forfeit power — the piece was widely read as a sneak attack on the current president. Bush never named Trump. He thus maintained his years-long, stupefying silence about the man who’s trashed him, his family, his party, his legacy PEPFAR program and, most of all, his country. As Jonathan V. Last wrote for the right-of-center, anti-Trump Bulwark, if Bush’s words were a veiled attack on Trump, “the veil is so powerful that even light can’t escape it.” Bush’s essay came two days after former President Obama finally responded …
