Four stories cited in Press Gazette round-up of AI going wrong in news publications AI is being widely used in journalism and can lead to reputation-killing scandals and mistakes if not monitored closely. Here Press Gazette rounds up some of the main examples of where AI has gone wrong. The Mississippi Free Press has admitted to being the latest news outlet caught out by publishing an AI column written by a fake author. The non-profit outlet said the journalist did not seem suspicious until they submitted an invoice that did not match their name. This was the same way that purported freelance journalist Margaux Blanchard was caught out by Wired last year. There have been numerous similar cases of AI work mistakenly published by major news outlets in the past year as the technology grows more sophisticated. Sometimes the ‘journalists’ are caught out pre-publication. There have also been examples of real writers getting caught out using AI in unsanctioned ways. The title moved into profit for the first time in its 17-year history last year after new leadership team Joanna Coles and Ben Sherwood took over. Bonnici was speaking on a panel about AI at Press Gazette’s Media Strategy Network USA event held at Stagwell’s One World Trade Center office in New York on Thursday 12 March. Subscriptions pages for the Financial Times, The Telegraph, The Scotsman and Bloomberg Media on 23 January 2026 Digital news subscriptions prices have increased by an average of 3% in the UK for the second year running, according to Press Gazette analysis. However many publications were offering discounts in January of up to 89%, indicating that many consumers may be able to avoid paying the full price. Of 23 publications included in Press Gazette’s dataset both in January 2025 and January 2026, ten increased their annual digital subscription prices in the past year. Six saw no change in annual price and seven reduced the cost of their digital subscription. As a result the average percentage change among these 23 digital news subscriptions was 3%, close to the UK inflation rate of 3.6% (2.7% in the US) over the past 12 months. This contrasts to UK national newspaper cover prices, which were up by an average of 10% in the past year as publishers look to make up for falling newsstand sales and advertising. The total estimated number of redundancies in the UK and US throughout 2025 (based on company announcements and media reports) was at least 3,248. This means job cuts in 2025 were 16% lower than in 2024 and 59% down compared to 2023 (although around 2,000 Canadian jobs were also included in that year’s tally. Removing them would make it a 46% decline compared to 2023). The biggest month in 2025 for job cuts was January (at least 939) followed by October (499) and May (482).
