Campaigners say Lake Windermere needs real-time pollution warnings after two swimmers were taken to hospital | UK News

Real-time pollution warnings are needed at Lake Windermere after two people swimming there were taken to hospital last summer, campaigners have said. A seven-year-old boy developed life-threatening kidney failure following an E coli infection allegedly linked to him swimming in the lake. Windermere, in the Lake District in Cumbria, is one of the UK’s most popular open-water swimming destinations and attracts millions of visitors every year. In August last year, Claire and her family were kayaking in the lake when she noticed the water appeared murky, but she said she was reassured by the Environment Agency’s “excellent” bathing water classification. But hours later, her seven-year-old son became violently ill, suffering severe vomiting and rectal bleeding. He was admitted to hospital but his condition rapidly deteriorated, and after three days, he was transferred to a regional children’s hospital. The boy was diagnosed with haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition which is one of the leading causes of sudden kidney failure in children. Four days later, he experienced hallucinations after toxins from the infection began affecting …

Hillsborough Law will ‘criminalise lying’ by senior ministers, say campaigners | Politics News

Hillsborough Law will ‘criminalise lying’ by senior ministers, say campaigners | Politics News

Hillsborough Law will make it a criminal offence for prime ministers and cabinet ministers to deliberately mislead the public – but not backbench MPs. Democracy campaigners say a “historic” measure within the flagship legislation has gone under the radar, which is a move to “criminalise lying” by senior politicians. That is through a new standalone offence of “misleading the public”, punishable by up to two years in jail. This will apply to heads of government departments, civil servants and public officials such as police and NHS staff, if they intentionally mislead the public in a way that is “seriously improper”. MPs and peers are currently exempt – but dozens of backbenchers argue that should not be the case. Labour MP Neil Duncan-Jordan told Sky News: “MPs shouldn’t be above the law. Politicians have such a low standing with the public and that’s got to change.” Mr Duncan-Jordan is one of over 30 MPs who have backed an amendment by Labour MP Luke Myer, calling for the remit to be extended to all members of both …

Campaigners given fresh hope in battle over child abusers | Politics | News

Tony Hudgell, with the Princess of Wales (Image: Getty) Around 1,000 ‘monsters’ who “harm and break the bones” of children could be added to a new child abuse register every year, campaigners believe. Paula Hudgell, the adoptive mum of Tony Hudgell, is calling for a child abuse register to treat the vile thugs the same as sex offenders. The new child cruelty database, which the Daily Express is campaigning for, would copy the sex offenders’ register, forcing brutes to tell police if they change their names, move homes, get into new relationships, stay in a house for 12 hours or more with children and certain offenders could even be forced to tell officers about any planned contact with youngsters in a private setting. Campaigners had been hoping that Labour would amend their Sentencing Bill going through the House of Lords this week. But they are now hoping it will be included in the Crime and Policing Bill. And ministers, in a series of meetings, have privately indicated they hope to make the change. Some 900 …

Hillsborough Law debate withdrawn after backlash from campaigners and MPs | Politics News

The government has pulled an amendment to its proposed Hillsborough Law amid concerns from campaigners and some MPs that intelligence agencies could use it to “hide serious failures” from the public. It has also withdrawn the legislation from Monday’s parliamentary agenda entirely after initially planning for its report stage and third reading to go ahead and then bring forward amendments in the House of Lords. Sky News’ deputy political editor Sam Coates said one figure close to the talks described the situation as “absolutely mental”. Afghan veterans should be allowed to plug recruitment gaps in British Army, campaigners say | UK News

An Afghan special forces veteran trained in the UK who was left homeless after resettling here following the Taliban takeover is pleading with the government to allow him and his former colleagues to join the British Army. Major Noor Aziz Ahmadzai is one of more than 1,400 Afghans and their families to have faced homelessness since being given sanctuary in the UK after the fall of Kabul in August 2021. Conservative former security minister Tom Tugendhat has told Sky News the Ministry of Defence has “really let itself down” in not relaxing strict citizenship rules to take advantage of the training and expertise of Afghan exiles during a recruitment crisis in the British military. Noor joined the special police at the age of 16 and worked as a translator for the British before joining the Afghan special forces.
