The 79-year-old comedian was the original host of the late-night CBS show from 1993 to 2015 before passing the reins to Stephen Colbert. CBS pulled the plug on the popular talk show last July, citing a “financial decision.” The final episode will air May 21. In a new interview with The New York Times, Letterman was asked about his initial reaction to the news. “Disbelief,” he said. “Then it seemed like a botched holdup. When we got the facts about the Ellison family [David Ellison, with backing from his father, Larry, bought CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global], I took great delight in referring to the principal as the Ellison Twins. I was later corrected and told it’s just one guy. I didn’t care and I still …

Millions Of Americans Are Canceling Health Insurance Because They’re Paying Thousands Before Coverage Even Starts

Millions Of Americans Are Canceling Health Insurance Because They’re Paying Thousands Before Coverage Even Starts

In August of 2025, I got laid off from a part-time position and lost my health insurance. On one hand, I’m a freelance writer and journalist, so it’s a miracle I had insurance at all. I’m also relatively healthy and rarely go to the doctor. On the other hand, I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, and it never hurts to be prepared. After reading through my termination paperwork (which finally arrived in my mailbox six months later), I called COBRA to ask how much it would cost to extend my coverage until I could find something else. “It’ll be about $650 a month for your previous $4,000 deductible,” the representative told me, “but you can’t have a lapse in coverage, so you’ll need to retroactively pay for the last six months, too.” I pulled up the calculator on my laptop and crunched some numbers. “So I’ll need to pay almost $4,000 to get back on my health insurance, $650 a month from here, and another $4,000 out of pocket before it even kicks in?” …

UNT Faculty Publish Open Letter Over Canceling of Victor Quiñonez Show

UNT Faculty Publish Open Letter Over Canceling of Victor Quiñonez Show

Members of the faculty of College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) at the University of North Texas (UNT) released an open letter on Friday objecting to the cancelation of a solo exhibition of artist Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez. In the letter, which was addressed to the “Office of the President and University Leadership, University of North Texas,” the faculty said that they “strongly object to the abrupt and unexplained cancellation” of Quiñonez’s exhibition, adding, “The removal of legally protected artistic expression from a university gallery contradicts the institution’s own commitments to academic freedom, constitutional principles, and the open exchange of ideas fundamental to higher education.” Related Articles The letter cites three UNT policies regarding freedom of expression on campus, including its “Academic Freedom and Academic Responsibility,” which was last updated in 2024 and says “it is not the proper role of the University to attempt to shield individuals from ideas and opinions they find unwelcome, disagreeable, or even deeply offensive,” as well as a policy stating that the university “does not discriminate against works of …

I’m finally canceling Photoshop now that I’ve found these apps

I’m finally canceling Photoshop now that I’ve found these apps

Adobe has gotten a little out of control with its pricing models, and at this point, I’m working to replace as many programs as possible on my PC with free or cheap alternatives. I’ve used Photoshop for years, and I’ve always relied on it as my go-to image editor. But with all the AI they’ve begun implementing, as well as the extremely high monthly subscription price they’ve switched to, it’s time to start migrating to other programs. There are two programs I’ve found myself switching between, depending on the complexity of the project, and both work well enough for me to finally hit the “Uninstall” button on Photoshop. Maybe you’ll find yourself doing the exact same thing that I did. GIMP is legendary for a reason This program just keeps on getting better and better Don’t let the name push you away — GIMP is as legit as it comes. GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP for short, is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop, and rivals the program it seeks to copy in almost …

U.S. is canceling almost billion in Biden-era energy loans

U.S. is canceling almost $30 billion in Biden-era energy loans

The Trump administration said it’s canceling almost $30 billion of financing from the Energy Department’s green bank after reviewing transactions approved under former President Biden. The Energy Department said Thursday that its Loan Programs Office — now called the Office of Energy Dominance Financing — also plans to revise an additional $53 billion of funding. In a statement, the department said it has eliminated about $9.5 billion in financing for wind and solar projects as part of the adjustment and plans to redirect the funding toward natural gas and nuclear projects. The Energy Department, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, didn’t provide specific details on which other deals were affected. The Energy Department’s loans office swelled into a $400-billion green bank under Biden, partly due to an infusion in funds from his signature Inflation Reduction Act. The office has been used to finance Tesla Inc.’s Model S sedan and some of the first new nuclear reactors built in the U.S. in decades by Southern Co. But the program drew criticism from Energy …

Welcome to the Future of Noise Canceling

Welcome to the Future of Noise Canceling

This blurring of the lines between audio and health devices looks set to be a trend across the industry. “We really want to make sure that we take care of our customers’ hearing,” says Miikka Tikander, the Helsinki-based head of audio at Bang & Olufsen. Tikander points to recent data about the decline in hearing health in young adults and reports that there was a lot of emphasis from manufacturers on ANC and hearing health at the AES’ Headphone Technology conference in Espoo, Finland this August. “Apple has a big lead in that area,” he says. “We want to make sure that our headphones can adapt, make this choice [on when to block out sound] on your behalf, if you let it, of course. Some people don’t like that idea, but if there’s a noisy event in your surroundings, the headset can take care of it, just tune it out a bit and get you back to normal listening once you are away from that noise.” Enter the “Sound Bubble” Hearvana AI is one startup …
