Furyk named US captain for 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland after Woods turned down role

April 24 : Jim Furyk, a 17-times winner on the PGA Tour, was named on Friday as the U.S. team captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland after Tiger Woods declined the role following his arrest on a driving under the influence charge. The 55-year-old Furyk joins Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Davis Love III as the only U.S. Ryder Cup captains to receive a second term in the era of European continental inclusion. “The opportunity to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup Team for a second time is a tremendous honor,” Furyk said in a PGA of America press release. “I am committed to putting our players in the best position to succeed as we work to reclaim the Cup on European soil.” ‘INCORPORATING SOME NEW IDEAS’ Furyk also said he …

France sentences tanker captain as EU countries crack down on Russian shadow fleet – POLITICO

Other coastal states, including Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Belgium, have intercepted suspected shadow fleet vessels in the Baltic and North Seas. This has “in some cases, forced the Kremlin to adapt by reflagging shadow-fleet tankers … while occasionally deploying military escorts,” Charlie Edwards, a senior fellow for strategy and national security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, wrote in a recent article. But high-profile boardings like that of the Boracay only stop a fraction of shadow fleet vessels cruising off European coasts. “Few European capitals can sustain a high-tempo posture for long, leaving random boardings looking potentially escalatory without being strategically decisive,” Edwards noted. Governments across Europe are seeking to firm up their authority. Last week, the U.K. granted British forces new powers to board and detain sanctioned vessels. The Netherlands is mulling legal changes to target ships carrying false flags. The current legislation is “unclear,” said Fred Soons, a professor in international law at Utrecht University. The EU, which has banned hundreds of suspected shadow fleet vessels from its ports, is also pushing a …

France hands captain of suspected Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tanker one-year jail sentence

A French court Monday issued an arrest warrant and a one-year jail sentence against the Chinese captain of a suspected Russian “shadow fleet” tanker over failing to comply with orders to stop his ship. Chen Zhangjie, 39, was sentenced in absentia after the French navy boarded the Boracay tanker in September before releasing the vessel and its crew days later, in what Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned as “piracy”. The court in the western city of Brest also ordered Zhangjie to pay a 150,000-euro ($172,000) fine. The vessel, claiming to be flagged in Benin, was thought to be part of a fleet transporting Russian oil in violation of Western sanctions imposed over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Captain fantastic John McGinn revives Aston Villa’s stuttering season

Fourth-placed Villa now hold a six-point lead over Chelsea in sixth place after McGinn helped the club strengthen their grip on a Champions League place with his seventh goal of the campaign in all competitions. McGinn made way for Youri Tielemans shortly before Villa’s second goal in another boost to the club’s Champions League hopes as the Belgian returned to the pitch for the first time in almost two months. However, Villa manager Emery still wants more from McGinn, who he has challenged to reach double figures for goals and assists. Emery said: “With John McGinn, half of his challenge was to up his numbers. Two years ago I told him at the beginning of the season that you are not adding numbers for the team. “We want close to 10 goals and 10 assists, I said if he reaches those numbers we will achieve our objectives. “He’s now adding numbers and with those numbers we can keep our position in the table. “He is versatile, he’s played fantastic on the left side during the …

US Holocaust Museum Acquires Rare World War II Captain America Comics

US Holocaust Museum Acquires Rare World War II Captain America Comics

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has acquired a prized copy of Captain America Comics No. 1, famous for its cover depicting the titular hero punching Adolf Hitler in the face, the museum announced Tuesday. The issue was published in December 1940, nearly a year before the United States entered World War II, and entered the museum’s holdings courtesy of Riot Games cofounder Brandon Beck. Jack Kirby—who, with Joe Simon, created a host of iconic Marvel superheroes—was the son of Austrian Jewish immigrants and later served in the US Army during the war. Related Articles According to the museum, Kirby conceived the now-famous Captain America cover as a not-so-veiled rebuke of the nation’s isolationist stance amid the mounting Nazi threat. The effort proved influential: the widely circulated comic has been credited with helping raise public awareness in the United States of the escalating conflict in Europe. “This comic book holds enormous cultural and historical importance,” Zachary Levine, director of the museum’s Curatorial Affairs Division, said in a statement. Beck also donated an original copy of Captain America Comics No. 46, another …
