United’s Carrick shrugs off Martinez, Maguire bans before Chelsea clash

MANCHESTER, England, April 17 : Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said he was disappointed to be without suspended centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire in Saturday’s Premier League game at Chelsea, with both teams eyeing a Champions League spot. Martinez was sent off during Monday’s 2-1 loss at home to Leeds United for pulling striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. The Argentina international later got a three-match ban. Maguire, sent off during a draw at Bournemouth last month, was given a one-match ban by the FA on Wednesday. “The decisions have been made, something that we’re really disappointed with in many ways, but we’ve got to move on now and that’s what we’ll do,” Carrick told reporters on Friday. “It is what it is, we’ve been hit with some decisions but we have to accept it and move on.” However, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has been injured for over two weeks, could return on Saturday, Carrick said. “Kobbie has done little bits, we’re working towards it. There’s a decision to be made there,” he added. United, third …

Carrick has instilled a fight in Man Utd that they lacked under Amorim,

“He has had a huge impact and is making big improvements,” Carrick said of Sesko. “He is getting used to being here. He is desperate to do well and is a pleasure to work with. He is a real threat. I’m really excited about where he can get to. He’s got huge potential.” There is little doubt the United coach has enjoyed some good fortune since taking over. First Diogo Dalot escaped what should have been a red card for a studs-up challenge against Jeremy Doku in the derby against Manchester City, and then Tottenham were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Cristian Romero was sent off. Here, Palace spent much of the second half with a man down. Equally, Carrick could argue that you make your own luck. Despite Oliver Glasner’s grumblings, the rules state Christopher Kavanagh was right to award a penalty, even though Lacroix had initially grabbed hold of Cunha outside the penalty area before the Brazilian eventually tumbled in the box. Fernandes coolly converted the spot-kick and it …

Sesko winner against Everton gives Man Utd another reason to award Carrick permanent job

I expected a tough game, we had four wins in a row and some really good performances. I expected a period where we’d have to find ourselves a little bit, find results. We did it vs West Ham, did it today, sacrificed, worked for the team. The way we defended the box at the end, kept a clean sheet. It didn’t come easy for us today. I’ve never had an easy game here, expected tough one, the lads have trained really well, came in feeling good. We had to dig deep, it was a bit of a struggle but those are the best ones to win. On the counter-attacking goal: Great move, I know we’re capable of that, have players who can do it. If we defend as team we always have a chance. The clean sheet is just as important, but a brilliant counter, strong finish from Benjamin which I like. On Benjamin Sesko’s starting prospects: Ben’s in a good place at the moment, we’ve had some really good talks about it. Patience is …

Man United’s Dorgu faces weeks on the sidelines after injury at Arsenal, Carrick says

Jan 30 : Patrick Dorgu, who was injured after scoring Manchester United’s second goal in last weekend’s 3-2 Premier League win at Arsenal, may be sidelined for a few weeks or more, United manager Michael Carrick said on Friday. Media reports said the 21-year-old picked up a hamstring injury that forced him off the field in the 81st minute, half an hour after his left-footed volley put the visitors 2-1 ahead. Denmark international Dorgu, who joined United in the summer, also scored in the win over Manchester City earlier this month. “Pat is going to be out for a period of time. We’re still working through how long that’s going to be,” Carrick told reporters. “He’s had such a good couple of weeks and we weren’t sure if it was cramp or something more serious, but it looks more serious. Whether it’s a few weeks or more, we’re going to have to wait and see. Unfortunately, it’s something you have to work through in football.” Fourth-placed United face Fulham on Sunday as they look to …
