Rachel Carson Has Known the Ocean

Rachel Carson Has Known the Ocean

This is an edition of Time-Travel Thursdays, a journey through The Atlantic’s archives to contextualize the present. Sign up here. In the spring of 1936, Rachel Carson was working part-time at the United States Bureau of Fisheries in Baltimore. Her job mostly involved communications—producing radio scripts, reports, and brochures, the latter of which would change the course of her life. Asked to write an introduction for a brochure on fish, she delivered something that was lyrical, lively, and, according to her manager, entirely too good to be a government brochure. “I don’t think it will do,” Carson’s boss is said to have remarked. “Better try again. But send this one to The Atlantic.” She eventually did, and in the summer of 1937, she got a response. “We have every one of us been impressed by your uncommonly eloquent little essay,” Edward Weeks, an Atlantic editor, wrote from Boston. “The findings of science you have illuminated in such a way as to fire the imagination of the layman.” The magazine ran Carson’s essay with the title …

Several seniors ‘rescued’ in quiet Carson neighborhood, authorities say

Carson resident Evy Llamas recalled seeing furniture constantly moving in and out from the house down the street, new faces coming and going, and what appeared to be heavy clutter inside. “There was a couple that was always there trying to clean up, looked like there was a lot of hoarding going on,” Llamas said. “But as far as what they found, you couldn’t see that. You could not tell from out here what was going on in there.” Llamas is retired and was home the day the deputies pulled up to his neighbor’s house in the 200 block of West 234th Street. He watched as police cars and ambulances gathered outside the home. “I just saw older people sitting out there,” he said. “I didn’t even know it was an elder home before the incident, I thought they were just renting rooms out.” But according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the seemingly ordinary home was allegedly operating as an unlicensed senior care facility where elderly residents were malnourished and being neglected. Carson Beck’s College Career Set to End When Miami Faces Indiana in College Football Playoff Finale

Carson Beck’s College Career Set to End When Miami Faces Indiana in College Football Playoff Finale

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Carson Beck was only 17 when he enrolled at Georgia. Just a kid, completely unaware of what the next six years would bring. Had no idea he’d become a lightning rod for criticism. Had no idea his elbow would need to be surgically rebuilt. Had no idea that every start, every pass, every mistake, everything he did was going to be scrutinized. His college career ends Monday night. He can get the last laugh. “It’s been a hell of a ride,” Beck said. “And man, there’s just been so much good and so much else that I’ve went through — I don’t want to necessarily say it’s bad because I wouldn’t be in the position I am today if I didn’t go through it. But it has been unbelievable. I wouldn’t have changed anything.” He came to Miami for his final season with this in mind, and believing the Hurricanes had enough to win it all. There were doubters from the start. There were even more doubters when Miami went …

Inside the bitter fallout between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson

Inside the bitter fallout between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson

Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson’s feud is now the stuff of legend, having sparked four decades ago. Their fraught relationship has recently been re-examined by Mark Malkoff, who authored Love Johnny Carson, with the writer sharing the real reason behind their rift. Joan first appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965 as a last-minute guest, and charmed both Johnny and his audience with her sharp wit. She went on to appear on the show more than 100 times, both as a guest, and a guest host when Johnny was away. © Gene Arias/NBC via Getty ImagesJoan often appeared on Johnny’s show throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s The pair built a strong professional relationship, and Joan considered him to be her mentor. Their friendship soured, however, in 1986, when Joan was offered her own late-night talk show in direct competition with Johnny. Her final appearance on The Tonight Show came in April of that year, when she celebrated the 21st anniversary of her debut on the show. Just days later, she announced …
