These Chinese robots ride ceiling rails to charge your EV

China is living in the future when it comes to EV charging. Instead of drivers hunting for an open charging spot in a parking garage, overhead rail-mounted charging robots now travel along ceiling tracks and come to the car. The concept, already deployed in garages across multiple Chinese cities, turns every parking space into a potential charging spot without the cost of installing individual chargers at each one. A video circulating on social media this week shows one of these systems in action: a compact robotic unit gliding along a ceiling-mounted rail in an underground parking garage, stopping above a parked EV, and lowering a charging connector to plug in automatically. No app, no waiting in line, no dedicated charging bay required. ✨🇨🇳China’s overhead mobile charging stations support on-demand park-and-charge. Their automatic moving design eliminates the need for drivers to wait in line for charging. pic.twitter.com/3gCSArzvlC — 🇨🇳XuZhenqing徐祯卿 (@XueJia24682) February 20, 2026 How the overhead rail system works The concept is straightforward but clever. Man solves ceiling fans’ most annoying problem

Man solves ceiling fans’ most annoying problem

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Anyone who’s used an overhead ceiling fan knows it can be a pain to work. Yanking its chain gets the motor running, but there’s no easy visual indication of what speed setting the fan is  on. The blades can also take a frustratingly long time to reach their full speed. The result is many annoyed fan owners tugging vigorously on the chain, only to have their fan suddenly turn into an in-home airplane propeller. Most people would simply accept the ceiling fan’s inefficiencies as a headache and one of life’s unavoidable realities. But DIY makers armed with 3D printers aren’t like most people. In this case, a maker and content creator going by the handle Super Valid Designs decided to tackle the “ceiling fan guessing game” head-on. Using a commercially available 3D printer, he designed and fabricated a custom mounting device that attaches to the fan and provides a clear visual indicator for each speed setting. Once installed, every …

I control my old ceiling fan with my phone using this gadget

I control my old ceiling fan with my phone using this $29 gadget

My bedroom ceiling fan has been the stubborn holdout in an otherwise connected home. The Harbor Breeze fixture works fine — quiet motor, moves plenty of air, and it looks decent enough — but controlling it meant either pulling chains in the dark or getting out of bed to flip the wall switch. After building out my smart home around Alexa, that manual routine started feeling ridiculous. The Humpptom Universal Smart Wi-Fi Ceiling Fan Remote Control Kit runs about $29 on Amazon, and it solved a problem I’d been ignoring for way too long. Twenty minutes of installation later, I had voice control, app control, and the ability to finally include the bedroom fan in my nighttime automation. The lamps dim automatically at night. The Echo on my nightstand handles music, alarms, and quick questions. Even the window AC …

CES 2026: Govee Announces New Matter-Connected Ceiling and Floor Lights

CES 2026: Govee Announces New Matter-Connected Ceiling and Floor Lights

Govee today introduced three new HomeKit-compatible lighting products, including the Govee Floor Lamp 3, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra, and the Govee Sky Ceiling Light. The Govee Floor Lamp 3 is the successor to the Floor Lamp 2, and it offers Matter integration with the option to connect to HomeKit. The Floor Lamp 3 offers an upgraded LuminBlend+ lighting system that can reproduce 281 trillion colors, and it supports 1000K to 10000K light temperature range. LuminBlend+ is a color management system that offers accurate, true-to-life colors across any setting thanks to proprietary Gamma calibration. It supports an ultra-wide spectrum of lighting moods, and will be coming to additional Govee lights in 2026. Govee’s 21-inch Matter-compatible Ceiling Light Ultra has a 616-LED matrix that can render detailed patterns and scenes. Visuals can be created with up to eight distinct layers of motion, color, and shapes, plus there are 20+ presets to choose from. Govee says that it provides sufficient illumination for family areas while also offering a natural, true-to-life appearance across objects and skin tones. The …

A mathematical ceiling limits generative AI to amateur-level creativity

A mathematical ceiling limits generative AI to amateur-level creativity

A new theoretical analysis published in the Journal of Creative Behaviour challenges the prevailing narrative that artificial intelligence is on the verge of surpassing human artistic and intellectual capabilities. The study provides evidence that large language models, such as ChatGPT, are mathematically constrained to a level of creativity comparable to an amateur human. The study was conducted by David H. Cropley, a professor of engineering innovation at the University of South Australia. Cropley initiated this research to bring objective measurement to the polarized debate surrounding generative AI. While some proponents argue that AI can already outperform humans in creative tasks, others maintain that these systems merely mimic existing data without genuine understanding. Cropley sought to move beyond subjective opinions by applying the standard definition of creativity to the probabilistic mechanics of large language models. His goal was to determine if the way these models operate places an inherent limit on the quality of their output. To evaluate the creative potential of artificial intelligence, the researcher first established a clear definition of what constitutes a creative …
