Chris Chibnall teases his new ITV series Death at the White Hart, adapting his own novel

Chris Chibnall may currently be promoting his new Netflix series Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, but he will previously be returning to the channel that brought us his acclaimed drama, Broadchurch. That’s because Chibnall is working on a new series for ITV, Death at the White Hart, which is an adaptation of the writer’s own novel that was released earlier this year. As Chibnall was speaking with us exclusively for our video interview series The Radio Times Writers’ Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick, we asked the writer for an update on the new project – and how he is finding the adaptation process. “Yeah, it’s interesting,” he said of adapting his own prior work. “You’ve got different hats, really. So, you have to find the voice for the adaptation that is slightly different from the book. So yeah, we’re working with a great team on that – just quite early days in adapting that. “But yeah, it’s nice. It’s nice because I know the world and all that kind of …

Seven Dials’ Chris Chibnall on whether it could get a sequel, prequel

Seven Dials’ Chris Chibnall on whether it could get a sequel, prequel

Chris Chibnall, the writer best-known for his work on Doctor Who, Torchwood and Broadchurch, is behind new Netflix series Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, which adapts the iconic crime author’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery. Unlike so many of Christie’s novels, the story doesn’t feature Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, but instead centres on amateur sleuth Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent, as played here by Mia McKenna-Bruce. Bundle features in just one other Christie novel, The Secret of Chimneys, which came out four years prior to The Seven Dials Mystery in 1925. However, looking to the future of Chibnall’s collaboration with Netflix, that of course doesn’t mean it couldn’t be produced as a prequel or reworked to be a sequel. Of course, alternatively, Chibnall could adapt a different Christie novel entirely, focusing on brand new characters as Sarah Phelps has done many times for the BBC. Now, speaking with us exclusively for our video interview series The Radio Times Writers’ Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick, Chibnall has given his thoughts …

Doctor Who’s Chris Chibnall on Jodie Whittaker return and references

We’re now two years into Russell T Davies’s second era of Doctor Who, with the showrunner, who previously ran the series between 2005 and 2010, having returned for the 60th anniversary in 2023. He took over from Chris Chibnall, who was in charge of the series during Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Doctor, between 2018 and 2022. Since Chibnall left the show, Davies’s new episodes have made numerous references to his predecessor’s era, including to the Flux and controversial revelations about the Doctor’s origin. Whittaker herself even made a return, popping up for a cameo during Ncuti Gatwa’s swansong, The Reality War. Speaking with us exclusively for our video interview series The Radio Times Writers’ Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick, Chibnall was asked for his reaction to Whittaker’s return, and to the multiple references that have been made to his era since his departure. He called the references “lovely”, before adding: “I think there was a line I put in Jodie’s era about something from Steven’s era – maybe …

Doctor Who’s Chris Chibnall reacts to Billie Piper regeneration twist

Last year, Doctor Who fans were stunned by a huge twist in the latest season finale, as Ncuti Gatwa was seen regenerating into Billie Piper, who previously played the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler. The mystery of just what’s going on, and whether Piper is actually playing the next Doctor, has kept fans guessing ever since, with major figures from the show’s past and present including Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Steven Moffat, giving their thoughts. Now, Chris Chibnall, who wrote episodes for the Tenth Doctor and the Eleventh Doctor before becoming the showrunner for Jodie Whittaker’s era as the Thirteenth Doctor, has given his reaction. Chibnall was speaking with us exclusively for our video interview series The Radio Times Writers’ Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick, when he was asked whether he has any idea where the twist involving Piper is going.
