Antarctic seismic data points to an ancient structure circling Earth’s core

A layer only a few to a few dozen kilometers thick may be draped across the boundary between Earth’s core and mantle, and researchers say it likely consists of ancient ocean floor pushed deep underground over geologic time. That is the picture emerging from a study led by The University of Alabama, published in Science Advances, which used seismic data from Antarctica to probe a vast stretch of the Southern Hemisphere nearly 2,000 miles below the surface. The team found evidence that ultralow velocity zones, or ULVZs, are not just isolated patches in a few places. Instead, they may be widespread along the core-mantle boundary. These zones slow seismic waves and appear denser than the surrounding deep mantle. The researchers argue that the best explanation is old oceanic material that sank through subduction, then spread and accumulated along the bottom of the mantle. “Seismic investigations, such as ours, provide the highest resolution imaging of the interior structure of our planet, and we are finding that this structure is vastly more complicated than once thought,” said …

4 New High-End Watches Serious Collectors Are Circling Right Now

Welcome to Watch Guy Watches, GQ’s monthly curation of high-end timepieces for the true watch nerds among us. This month, we examine the second design from Fleming, a subtly tweaked Breguet Tradition, a Parmigiani with a lovely rose-colored dial, and one of the coolest Richard Milles we’ve ever laid eyes upon. Fleming crashed onto the scene in 2024 and immediately found a fan base (and ample clients) for its brand-new $50,000-plus watch. The brand and its debut watch, the Series 1, were the brainchild of American collector Thomas Fleming and James Kong, a watch photographer and ex–corporate attorney. The watch’s compact proportions, attractive lugs, precious metal cases, beautiful dial designs, and compelling double-barrel movement instantly won over watch nerds—no small feat! Now, Fleming is revisiting the Series one with a “Mark II” version in which much of the watch—from the case geometry to the movement to the dials—has been reconsidered and tweaked. Two options are available: a rose gold model called “Redwood” fitted with a matching rose gold dial, and a tantalum version called “Pacific” …

Cruise ship carrying British tourists circling Barbados after Trump’s Venezuela operation | World | News

A cruise ship carrying British tourists is circling Barbados “in limbo” after Donald Trump invaded Venezuela. Holidaymakers onboard the P&O cruise Arvia set sail from Barbados on January 2, 2025, and were due to dock at Martinique today before heading to St Kitts, British Virgin Islands, and more destinations. But due to military action in Venezuela, passengers on the cruise claim they haven’t got more than 30 miles from shore and have returned to Barbados THREE times already – including today (6) – to pick up passengers whose flights were cancelled or delayed. Lizzy Meadowcroft, 56, and her partner Mark Crowther, from Morecambe, Lancashire, said that the ship is currently docked in Barbados for the third time, where it will remain until 7pm local time this evening before heading to St Lucia. Many passengers who were due to be on the cruise did not make it after aircraft were instructed to avoid parts of the Caribbean by the US Federal Aviation Administration in the wake of the military action. Lizzy said: “We are disappointed as …
