This Clever Bike Bell Can Even Be Heard by People Wearing Noise-Canceling Headphones

The unique Škoda DuoBell bicycle bell is a classic example of a completely analog solution to a problem caused by digital innovation. Its ringing sound bypasses the noise-canceling capabilities of modern headphones, which often isolate the wearer from outside noises all too well. People with headphones using active noise cancellation are often left in a perceptive bubble where they fail to react—or simply react too late—to imminent dangers on streets and sidewalks they can’t hear coming. The DuoBell’s mission is precisely to make itself heard even beyond the latest-generation barrier filters. Ring Bling To design the DuoBell’s ANC-defeating capabilities, researchers from the Czech brand—which coincidentally enough made its commercial debut in 1895 with a bicycle—worked closely with researchers at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom to verify whether there was a way to overcome active noise cancellation. ANC is now present in the vast majority of headphones and earphones, including low-cost models. It’s also a feature of software programs; it’s the tech that keeps your dog’s incessant barking from showing up in your …

Go Gentle by Maria Semple review – a joyfully clever New York romcom | Fiction

What would Marcus Aurelius have made of the Kardashians? Would Seneca have been amused by mindfulness apps? These were questions I had never consciously pondered before reading Maria Semple’s new novel. Neither, in my irrational and unvirtuous state, had I spent much time considering the application of Stoic philosophy to any other key aspects of modern life. Semple, best known for her exuberant, ingenious bestseller Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, here presents us with Adora Hazzard, Stoic philosopher and divorcee. Adora lives a contented life on New York City’s Upper West Side, spending her days tutoring the twin sons of an old-money family in philosophy and seeking to live according to Stoic virtues, without recourse to destabilising “externals”. But her settled life is soon disrupted by that most classic of externals, the handsome stranger. “Curse these alluring men who throw us off our game!” (Marcus Aurelius, paraphrased.) What follows is tricky to categorise. Is it a knockabout comedy about the collective power of midlife women? (No, it isn’t, though it seems to gesture in that direction …

Aiper IrriSense 2 Smart Irrigation System Review: Clever Yet Uneven

Aiper IrriSense 2 Smart Irrigation System Review: Clever Yet Uneven

To use Area mode, you first have to define the boundaries of the area. This is done in the app via a process similar to what I’ve encountered on some competing hardware devices. You fire up the mapping mode, and the sprinkler engages. Then, using a simple remote-control system, you dial the water pressure to the appropriate level, aiming at the edge of your yard but not the fence; once the water is where you want it, you drop a pin to mark the boundary of the watering area. You then rotate the nozzle on top of the sprinkler a few degrees and repeat, setting the strength of the flow to cover the desired area. Repeat again and again until you’ve gone through 360 degrees and have dropped pins to visually represent the entirety of your yard. The company says the maximum supported area is a vast 4,800 square feet, with spray reaching up to 39 feet. The clever makeup combination Eva Longoria, 51, relies on for her elevated nude lip look

When it comes to statement beauty moments, Eva Longoria knows the power of a perfectly chosen lip. Whether she’s walking the red carpet or sharing her everyday glam routine, her lip looks are almost always polished and defined.  From soft nude tones to sexy, red shades that add instant impact, Eva, 51, proves that the right lip product can completely transform a makeup look, even if its for a more casual moment. Which is where the actress stepped in to reveal how she achieves her signature nude lip. AT A GLANCE Eva Longoria’s new show, Eva Longoria: Searching for France, premieres Sunday April 12. In an Instagram post, the 51-year-old praised the L’Oréal Paris Blurfiller lip liners and Hyaluron Tint Lip Stain Serum. “I’m going to mix a couple of these,” she said, as she created her own custom lip shade. For the Eva finish, it’s all about two formulas that deliver both comfort and colour payoff. Her go-tos subtly shape and define, adding a fresh finish to her classic glowing makeup look. Not to mention …

We are living in a period of political anti-intellectualism. But in pop culture, clever is the new cool | Fashion

Put down your negroni, hang up your Prada handbag and pick up a paperback. Next time someone whips out their phone to take your picture, grab your reading specs, not your lipstick. Smart is the new hot. Pop stars are launching book clubs – the 1970s had Studio 54, this decade has Dua Lipa’s online literary salon Service95 – or joining Substack, where Charli xcx recently published a 1,800-word essay interrogating why it is that as a pop star “you cannot avoid the fact that some people are simply determined to prove that you are stupid”. The supermodel Kaia Gerber (who is fashion royalty – her mum is Cindy Crawford) passes the time backstage at fashion week reading Didion, Duras and Camus, not Vogue. Three years ago, we dressed in pink to go to the cinema to watch Barbie; in 2026, the mind-bendingly structured, early-Victorian masterpiece Wuthering Heights is the talk of Hollywood, and Netflix is betting big on Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet in Dolly Alderton’s forthcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Intellect and glamour – which have always sat …

However, the experts at Vaillant are here to help. No matter what kind of home you live in – whether you have underfloor heating or radiators – there is a solution to fit your home. 3 clever ways to use Google Opal to build mini apps without any code

3 clever ways to use Google Opal to build mini apps without any code

Google Opal is quickly becoming a household name as a Labs experiment, and it’s the easiest way to vibe code tiny apps with AI. Previously, Google Opal was limited in functionality and availability, but that’s finally changing. Google opened up Opal to over 160 countries late last year, and expanded its feature set in a big way last month. Instead of needing to provide Opal with detailed instructions for every step in the app-building process, vibe coders can now use an AI agent to automate parts of the app and deploy mini-apps in new ways. The characteristic setting Opal apart is that it’s truly a no-code solution. You can use natural-language prompts to describe what you want to build, and Opal will think up a mini app for you. Or, you can use the Opal visual editor to create custom “workflows” made up of “actions” and “chains.” These are the building blocks of Opal mini apps, and they’re easy for anyone to build. Whichever way you create mini apps, you won’t encounter a single line …

Kawasaki patent reveals new electric motorcycle with clever frame

Kawasaki patent reveals new electric motorcycle with clever frame

Kawasaki may have taken its sweet time to slowly bring us the most basic level of commuter electric motorcycles, but a new patent shows that the company has quietly been working on more advanced designs that could signify a major leap in development for the company. It is important to note that most electric motorcycles are designed around their powertrains in a fairly integrated way. In some cases, the motor and battery pack become structural elements within the chassis itself, meaning the frame is effectively designed around a specific motor configuration. That approach works well for performance and rigidity, but it can limit flexibility if a manufacturer wants to create multiple models with different motors. Kawasaki’s newly published patent, as noted by Cycle World’s Ben Purvis, proposes a different idea: a modular mounting system that allows multiple motor types to fit within the same motorcycle frame. The basic design outwardly resembles Kawasaki’s existing Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 electric motorcycles, featuring a steel trellis frame with removable battery packs positioned between the frame rails and …

Gone review – Did he do it? David Morrissey unravels in clever, nuanced drama

Get the latest entertainment news, reviews and star-studded interviews with our Independent Culture email Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter None of us know how we would react to the news of the body of a loved one being found in woodland near our home. But David Morrissey’s painfully uptight headteacher Michael Polly’s first thought is to furiously reprimand Detective Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles), who has just delivered this terrible news, for walking mud into his house. It is, as we’ve already learned by that point, fairly typical behaviour. Polly is, as Cassidy puts it, “a funny fish”. Might he also be a murderer? Let’s just say that on the basis of early impressions, it doesn’t seem impossible. ITV’s new crime thriller Gone is a fiction but one inspired by real-life detective Julie Mackay and crime journalist Robert Murphy’s 2024 book To Hunt a Killer. As such, it has the ring of both practical and narrative veracity. Michael Polly lives for …
