SpaceX settles lawsuit with state Coastal Commission over flights

SpaceX settles lawsuit with state Coastal Commission over flights

SpaceX and the California Coastal Commission have settled a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s rocket company over the agency’s attempt to regulate its flights from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The settlement was reached last week by the two sides, but the details won’t be made public until it is approved by Los Angeles U.S. District Court Judge Stanley Blumenfeld Jr. The case would remain pending if the settlement is not accepted. SpaceX and the Coastal Commission did not respond to messages asking for comment. The lawsuit was filed in 2024 after the agency that oversees the state’s coastal development denied a plan by the rocket company to sharply increase its launches from the Santa Barbara County facility. The rocket company has been launching its Starlink broadband satellites into space from the site, raising concerns about its effect on wildlife. Nearby residents also have complained of sonic booms created by the company’s Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX contends that the state doesn’t have authority over its launches at the military base, and alleged political bias after several …

Hyperlocal newsletters find revenue covering Kent coastal towns

Don’t Miss Media Group home pages, and founder Georgina Wilson-Powell (top right). A local newsletter business covering UK coastal towns is on track to hit £85,000 in annual revenue from its first location in under two years. Don’t Miss Margate was launched in May 2024 by former magazine editor Georgina Wilson-Powell, who expects the business to support a full market-rate salary within the next year. The newsletter launched under the Don’t Miss Media brand, later renamed Don’t Miss Media Group (DMMG) as it expanded to Ramsgate in September 2025. A third edition is set to launch in Broadstairs in April, with plans to scale further across the coast. Wilson-Powell, who has spent 20 years in journalism, previously held editorial roles at Time Out, BBC Good Food and Morrisons magazine. She also founded sustainable living magazine Pebble, which was sold after growth stalled during the pandemic. The idea for the newsletter came after she spotted a gap in the market, with “people missing events, not knowing what’s on” and relying on Instagram. “We’ve lost that kind …

Mexico’s Coastal Communities Fear More Crude Contamination as Spill Source Unclear

(Corrects surname of ecologist to Zepeda from Zepada in paragraph 5) COATZACOALCOS, Mexico, March 20 (Reuters) – Residents along Mexico’s Gulf Coast fear more crude oil will wash onto beaches in Tabasco and Veracruz states nearly a month after the ‌first signs of contamination were ‌detected, as authorities investigate the source of the spill. The contamination has affected 230 km (143 miles) of shoreline and 39 communities in the two states, according to the Gulf of Mexico Reef Corridor Network, a coalition of fishing, Indigenous and environmental groups. Many affected communities depend on fishing and tourism and worry the spill could damage their livelihoods ahead of the Easter holidays, when beaches typically attract visitors. The group said the crude has reached Ostion lagoon in Veracruz, a breeding area for fish, shrimp and clams. It has raised concerns about the lack of information on damage to wildlife and warned that coastal ecosystems must be cleaned quickly before sea turtle nesting season begins in April. “These slicks are going to keep spreading,” ecologist Alex Zepeda said during …

SUPER73 has spent the last decade turning a scrappy Orange County idea into a recognizable silhouette: sun-struck, moto-styled, rowdy around the edges as they carve up the coastline. The new A-Series pushes that adventure bike shape into a broader lane. These bikes still look born for boardwalks, back alleys, and a pack ride ripping up the LA River, but they’re built to slide more cleanly into city life too, with commuter-minded utility and a wider fit range, including sizing that gives shorter riders a far better foothold. See It That shift lands at the frame level, not just in a few accessories. SUPER73 built its name on bikes with a low, chunky stance that felt closer to a machine with swagger than a mere bicycle on steroids, and the A-Series keeps that visual muscle intact. What changes is the ease. New platforms with 27-inch (MZFT), …

The House Article | MPs Urge Support For Homeowners Threatened By Coastal Erosion

Illustration by Tracy Worrall 11 min read2 hr After a year of unprecedented rates of coastal erosion, Matilda Martin visits a Suffolk village where she finds homeowners left liable for the costs of demolishing their own homes – but only after a bat survey Steps hang from the cliff leading to nowhere; fencing, too, curves into thin air while the skewed foundations of what was once a house slide down a sandy slope to the Suffolk sea. This is Thorpeness, or what is left of it. The village is being eaten by the waves at a far faster rate than anyone expected and becoming emblematic of the increasing challenge of coastal erosion. “On New Year’s Eve, we were dancing on those rocks in the garden,” says Roger Hawkins, the owner of a home apparently doomed to follow its neighbours, pointing to shoreline rubble. “The next morning, we were literally watching them fall into the sea.” Hawkins and others at the water’s edge face not only losing their uninsurable homes but liability for the …

We all need at least one good waterproof jacket, whether for day-to-day wear or for hiking and other active pursuits. They range from lightweight shells to insulated winter jackets, but all feature a waterproof material (often with a membrane such as Gore-Tex). “In practical terms, they’re fully waterproof,” says Ben Darby, an outdoor expert at Trekitt. “They let through water vapour from sweat, but stop rain droplets from getting through the fabric.” Premium makers like Arc’teryx, Montane and The North Face sell waterproofs for upwards of £500. Decent affordable models from the likes of Superdry and Dare2b come in at around £100, while other labels including Tierra, Berghaus and Rab occupy the middle ground. Coastal road swept away into the sea in Devon | UK News

A coastal road that was hit by three named storms has been destroyed after another downpour. Part of the A379 in Devon, connecting the villages of Torcross and Slapton, near Dartmouth, broke apart overnight, with its sea defences destroyed in January’s three named storms – Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra. The storms all brought heavy rain to many areas of the UK, particularly the South West, leading to flooding and widespread travel disruption. Image: Pic: Office of Caroline Voaden Devon County Council has warned that the damage to the A379 could cost “tens of millions of pounds” to repair, while Liberal Democrat MP Caroline Voaden said: “This is the news we’ve all been dreading.” Ms Voaden, the MP for South Devon, who was at Westminster to urge the government to provide more funding for roads on Tuesday, said earlier: “One of my team is on the …

Met Office weather stations in Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, Wales, recorded 7cm of lying snow at 8am. Snow on the Pennine Way near the village of Diggle, near Oldham, north-west England, on Wednesday.
