Post-Stephen Colbert, CBS still wants an original late-night show

CBS hasn’t given up on producing an original late-night show — despite easing Stephen Colbert out the door. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” ends next month after CBS canceled the popular program, citing financial pressures. The network’s top two executives told reporters during a press briefing in Hollywood on Wednesday that the network still wants to be a player in the 11:35 p.m. hour. CBS struck a one-year deal with media mogul Byron Allen to bring his “Comics Unleashed” syndicated show to the prominent time slot once occupied by David Letterman until Colbert took the mantle a decade ago. President Trump, in social media posts, has taken credit for getting Colbert, whom he dislikes, tossed off the air. Colbert’s final broadcast will be May 21. Beyond the stop-gap arrangement with Allen, network executives acknowledged they don’t have a long-term plan for the late-night hours — but development executives are working on it. “We are still going to develop other ideas, other concepts,” said George Cheeks, whose role as chair of TV Media at Paramount …

Stephen Colbert reacts to Trump’s Easter threats to Iran over Strait of Hormuz’s closure

Stephen Colbert has reacted to President Donald Trump’s threats to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges. Posting to Truth Social on Easter Sunday, Trump announced that the U.S. would attack Iran on Tuesday, stating that “There will be nothing like it!!!” As Colbert noted, Trump going “100 percent cage-free crazy on the internet” didn’t make for a very festive Easter atmosphere. “Open the Fuckin’ Strait [of Hormuz], you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell — JUST WATCH!” Trump wrote (emphasis original). “Praise be to Allah.” “You know, it is not often that a network has to bleep the words of a sitting president,” Colbert quipped. “Hasn’t happened since [President Harry S.] Truman put that famous sign on his desk: The bleep stops bleep.” SEE ALSO: Watch a jar of Nutella make space history alongside Artemis II astronauts Quickly running through Trump’s recent history regarding his messaging on Iran, Colbert noted that just last week the president said reopening the Strait of Hormuz was not an issue the U.S. was interested in being involved …

In a Truth Social post on Thursday (2 April), Trump announced that he had fired Bondi from her post as head of the Department of Justice. Her 14-month tenure at the DOJ was marked by controversy over her management of investigations tied to the dead convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including her handling of the Epstein Files. In what became a significant political setback for the administration, Bondi went back on her earlier promises to reveal those named in the Epstein files. When the Justice Department was forced by Congress to release the files to the public, they did so in chunks and with heavy redactions. US broadcaster Stephen Colbert has big plans to keep himself busy when his talk show goes off the air in May. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, it was announced that Colbert will be co-writing a new instalment in the Lord Of The Rings franchise, based on the eighth chapter in JRR Tolkien’s novel The Fellowship Of The Ring. Filmmaker Peter Jackson announced the news in a social media video, ostensibly about the next film in the big-screen series, The Hunt For Gollum, in which he teased that “that’s not the only Tolkien movie that we’re developing”. Stephen Colbert has found his post-Late Show job. The comedian has been tapped to pen a new Lord of the Rings movie, alongside Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee, which will be the second of two upcoming films in the blockbuster franchise. Colbert joined Peter Jackson to announce the news on social media Tuesday night. “The thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in The Fellowship [of the Ring] that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day,” Colbert said in the video (below). “It’s basically chapters ‘Three Is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-downs,’ and I thought, Oh wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made? “And I started talking it over with my son Peter, who’s also a screenwriter, and we worked out what we thought would work, especially as a …

Stephen Colbert Rejects Blacklisted Writer Comparison, Praises Staff

Stephen Colbert was honored at the 2026 Writers Guild Awards with the Walter Bernstein Award, given to someone who has used creativity, grace and bravery to confront social injustice in the face of adversity. But the Late Show host, known for his sharp criticism of the Trump administration, whose show is coming to an end in a little over two months for what network CBS called a “purely financial decision” amid a challenging linear TV environment, rejected comparisons between himself and Bernstein. Talking about researching Bernstein ahead of receiving the award, Colbert said he wasn’t sure why he didn’t realize that the Hollywood “blacklist was not a government policy.” He continued, “The blacklist wasn’t a law or a regulation or an executive order. It was a voluntary industry-wide agreement to deny work to left-leaning artists out of fear that certain members of the government might publicly attack the parent corporation of these artists for the union that they belong to. It was that threat, only the threat, of trouble, that ended so many careers. And …
