Households risk £300 fine over log burner mistake use following law changes | Personal Finance | Finance

You cannot emit smoke from a chimney in a smoke control area (Image: Getty) Households in England with a log burner in their home face being landed with fines of up to £300 for making a common mistake. Meteorological spring may have just arrived in the UK, but temperatures are still a touch on the chilly side, so it’s not quite time to ditch the heating – or log burners – just yet. While daytime temperatures are gradually turning milder, spring evenings typically bring a significant drop in temperatures, typically reaching lows of around 3C on average. As such, evenings in March still call for a blast of warmth, which means households with log burners will still be lighting them up to fend off the cold weather and stay toasty. But a law change means that those living in a smoke control area must be mindful of how much smoke their burner emits, as those who exceed a certain limit can face significant fines. Shocking pictures show collapsed road at royal property due to snow | Royal | News

A road which is part of a popular route on the Balmoral Castle Estate in Aberdeenshire, has collapsed due to bad weather and snow. It is part of the route leading to the popular Spittal of Glen Muick visitors’ car park, which is currently inaccessible as a repair plan takes shape. The road is said to have been “undermined” by a “high volume” of snowmelt. Balmoral Castle posted a statement on their social media Instagram page: “Unfortunately, due to a high volume of snowmelt, the road at the Spittal of Glen Muick car park has collapsed and undermined the bridge. “The bridge is now closed to both vehicles and pedestrians. We will begin repair work as soon as possible.” For those visiting the estate, the road and car park is a main access point for Loch Muick and Lochnagar. Currently, multiple cones have been put up to stop people from attempting to cross the bridge and the car park has been closed to both vehicles and pedestrians. The start of 2026 brought nearly two weeks …

Sven Ski Clinic has the edge with fast track help for winter sport injuries | City & Business | Finance

The snowy sport perfections of the 2026 Winter Olympics will live in the memory, but don’t be so seduced that you hit the slopes without getting fit first. The risk of injury is not to be under-estimated, advises trauma and orthopaedic specialist Dr Sven Putnis. An NHS surgeon his new business Sven Ski Clinic tackles prevention with targeted exercises and the emerging one of effective treatment pathways. The where, when and how follow ups organised for back in the UK are major factors impacting recovery. “Initial management and advice can often be unreliable and delay the return to life,” Putnis warns. An activity holiday in the snow combining demanding physical engagement and high-octane socialising is like no other. And the pool of punters is getting wider from newbies to rusty returners. “The average age for skiing and snowboarding is going up which brings with it the potential for more injuries,” says Putnis. “Ice and packed powder are danger zones. Evidence suggests that there is a lack of both physical and mental preparation for snow sports …

Horror RAF warning over UK fighter jets in cold weather – ‘may struggle’ | UK | News

Horror RAF warning over UK fighter jets in cold weather – ‘may struggle’ | UK | News

Britain’s air force would struggle to operate in -30C Arctic conditions, the head of the RAF has said. Sir Harv Smyth, Air Chief Marshal, said the service was able to handle temperatures above 35C “incredibly” well thanks to decades of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, he expressed hesitation about whether the same could be said about handling the -30C conditions of the High North.  “It’s a much more hostile environment,” Sir Harv said in a speech at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London. “We have become an air force that’s incredibly good at operating in the Middle East. “I know I can send any squadron out the door and they can work in plus 35 degrees and make airplanes work and fly really good missions. “I’m not 100% sure we could do that in -30C.” During the Cold War, the Armed Forces built expertise to fight in the Arctic, but since that ended, its focus has been on flying in warmer climates. The main areas of concern for RAF leaders include the availability of …

A colossal blizzard spanning 400 miles is on track to engulf the country, dumping heavy snow across vast swathes. A whopping 26 cities across the country are likely to be impacted with the worst hit areas to be buried in 130cm of snow. Brutal WXCHARTS snow maps have turned purple, white and in places yellow, indicating that extremely heavy snow will soon make its impact known on the country. Recently, the UK has been enjoying milder conditions; however, weather maps indicate that the bone-chilling weather will soon make a dramatic U-turn. The heavy snow is set to smash into the country at midnight on Monday, February 16. The entirety of Scotland is barely visible in the weather maps, with the entire country covered by a massive wall of snow. Parts of Perth and Kinross are estimated to see an eye watering 130cm of snow, its surrounding areas will see snow depths hover between 20cm-80cm. New snow maps show UK hit by rare weather event alongside 39 inch blizzards – full list | Weather | News

A very rare weather event could hit the UK this week, bringing more wintry conditions. The latest weather maps from WXCharts have turned orange, indicating the likelihood of unusual conditions blasting the country. According to the weather maps, several areas of the country will experience freezing rain, a very rare weather phenomenon which is mostly common in the US, and not the UK. On Tuesday, February 5, maps show an orange patch over the Cairngorms National Park, indicating freezing rain. Across the rest of the UK, there will be some snow in Scotland, with large parts of the Midlands and the South of England expected to see rain. In Wales and Northern Ireland, conditions will also be wet. By Wednesday, February 4, at midnight, the freezing rain has a faint orange patch on the maps. UK snow map shows 380-mile sheet blanketing Britain – 70 counties hit | Weather | News

Snow will hit 70 UK counties in February, according to the latest weather maps. Despite us edging closer to spring, wintry conditions are set to continue, WXCharts suggests. After the chaos of Storm Chandra, cold snaps and snow have been predicted for the month of February. In fact, the Met Office recently revealed which areas it predicts are at risk of snow in November. Meanwhile, forecaster WXCharts in its own separate prediction shows the areas that could be hit with snow on Saturday, February 14, marking a blustery and cold Valentine’s Day for many.  It’s worth noting that more or less snowfall could happen, though. This is because snow is one of the hardest weather events to predict. Even a slight change in temperature or air moisture level can determine whether snow falls or not. However, WXCharts’ current weather maps show a huge chunk of the UK being hit with snow. It stretches from the northern tip of Scotland all the way down to cities like Stoke-on-Trent in England, with additional patches of light snow …
