Two kilometres underground near Sudbury, Ont., a machine has reached a temperature so low it barely seems real. Inside SNOLAB, scientists have cooled the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, or SuperCDMS, to just tens of milliKelvin above absolute zero, roughly a hundred times colder than outer space. That number matters because the experiment’s detectors cannot truly come alive until they reach it. “Reaching this base temperature now allows us to turn on the detectors, make sure they are all working and start collecting data that potentially is coming from dark matter particles hitting our detectors,” says Miriam Diamond, a co-principal investigator in the international collaboration and an assistant professor in the University of Toronto’s department of physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science. For the team behind SuperCDMS, hitting base temperature marks a turning point. The project is no longer mainly about construction and installation. Paramount+ has dropped first look images for the eighth and final season of The Chi, and for a love letter by creator Lena Waithe to her hometown, death sure stalks Chicago. That was made clear to Jacob Latimore as Emmett when his mother, Jada Washington, played by Yolanda Ross, died in the season 7 finale after a battle with cancer. Then there was the shocking murder of Alicia Daniels Lafayette, played by Lynn Whitfield. Now it’s all to play for in the final season. In a first look image unveiled by Paramount+ on Tuesday, with Birgundi Baker as Kiesha by his side, Emmett and the rest of The Chi cast head toward their own farewell exits. “As The Chi enters its eighth and final season and its coldest winter ever, life or death choices must be made. Temperature drops that disrupt this balance can wreak havoc on our bodies, which are primed to work at or near a normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. When we get cold, our bodies respond by reducing blood flow to our skin, shivering to generate heat, and trapping warm air near our skin with goosebumps. But in extreme conditions, our built-in warming methods fail, and our body temperature starts to drop. Once it falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, the body has officially entered hypothermia.  A falling core temperature can be disastrous for the body, but, in rare situations, it can actually be beneficial to enter hypothermia, and some medical procedures recommend inducing it. But Arctic ranger Josh Spice has found himself at the mouth of a barrel stove desperately trying to heat the saw’s frozen blades to cut down enough trees to make it through the night in northern Alaska. Patrolling at the gates of the Arctic National Park, where it snows at least eight months of the year and daylight dwindles to six hours a day in winter, Mr Spice is well-placed to offer some unique tips on how to cope with the cold.
