The Saturday Night Live star, 43, spoke about the elaborate investment during an upcoming May 4 episode of Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman’s podcast, Smartless. Alongside their co-investor, Paul Italia, Jost and Davidson bought the decommissioned Staten Island ferry boat, named the John F. Kennedy, for $280,000 in 2022, according to The New York Times. Jost said his dad was the first person he texted after making the purchase. “He literally was like, ‘Did you do your homework?’ Which is such a teacher thing to say,” the comedian shared on the Smartless, according to People. “I …

The Emirates on the Tightrope | Colin Powers

On Sunday, March 22, the United Arab Emirates’ foreign minister, Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, maternal brother of UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, put on a brave face. The evening prior, President Donald Trump declared that if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened within forty-eight hours, he would order strikes on Iranian power plants. The announcement prompted Iran’s military command to specify that any such attack would bring destruction to the energy, IT, and water facilities servicing the American military within the Gulf. Because the power stations and desalination plants on the target list were public utilities, serving resident populations as well as the range of forces directed by US CENTCOM, Iran’s prospective retaliation imperiled practically everyone living in the UAE. Paying little heed to the fact that his own allies were driving the escalation—and, indeed, had started the war itself—the UAE’s foreign minister responded to Tehran’s threat by proclaiming, “We will never be blackmailed by terrorists.” The UAE’s chief diplomatic advisor and media liaison, Anwar Gargash, expressed a similar sentiment. A …

Reich: The Sextets album review – Colin Currie celebrates the minimalist master’s joy of six | Classical music

The Colin Currie Group formed 20 years ago to honour Steve Reich’s 70th birthday with a performance of Drumming. This year, the great American composer turns 90, making this, the group’s fourth Reich album on Currie’s own label, a double celebration. Sextet, hailing from 1985, features two keyboardists playing piano and synthesisers alongside four percussionists on marimbas, vibraphones, bass drums, crotales, sticks and tam-tams. Shifting patterns interlock with the precision of a Swiss watch across one of the composer’s typical fast, slow, fast, slow, fast arcs. Currie’s recording flickers with subtle nuances with a naturalistic sound less closely mic’d than in Reich’s own classic accounts. Steve Reich: The Sextets album cover. Photograph: PR IMAGE In 1986’s Six Marimbas, a rescoring of 1973’s Six Pianos, Reich has two of the instruments rise and fall in volume within the canonic textures of the remaining four. Exuberant in spirit, its woody tones fall easily on the ear. Currie’s relaxed approach – he takes 22 minutes where Reich drives it home in 16 – feels enjoyably chilled. The Double …

In Jamaican culture, a duppy is the vengeful spirit of a person who has died harboring a grievance. Those whom the duppy blames will be haunted with unremitting wrath. “It’s not the soul” that makes the duppy, an elderly woman informed the anthropologist Martha Beckwith in the 1920s, “for the soul goes to heaven, and it’s not the body, for we know that goes away into the earth, but it’s the shadow.” It’s still the custom in some parts of Jamaica for friends and relations of the troubled deceased to nail down the sleeves and socks of the corpse in its coffin to ensure that the duppy cannot escape. But what if the duppy is already at large? The Jamaican novelist Diana McCaulay’s A House for Miss Pauline is a supernatural story about the consequences of what is assumed to be a murder. The corpse of the victim, Turner Buchanan, a foreigner, has never been found, and Buchanan’s shadow is just one of several candidates for the duppy, if that’s what it is, that wails …

Colin Jost makes gasp-worthy Epstein joke on SNL Weekend Update

SNL hasn’t hesitated to evoke Epstein, and last night’s Weekend Update was no different. SEE ALSO: ‘SNL’ Cold Open features Pete Davidson as Border Czar Tom Homan Anchor Colin Jost mentioned Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s comparison of ICE’s presence in the state to the Nazi occupation described in Holocaust victim Anne Frank’s diaries. “But remember, this administration has always ignored the stories told by young girls,” Jost said as the photo switched to one of Epstein. The audience ooohed so hard that Jost himself had a visual reaction. Weekend Update was full of other political references this week, including the killing of Alex Pretti and the release of the Melania documentary. Source link

Colin Jost jokes how wife Scarlett Johansson could reclaim highest-grossing actor title from Zoe Saldana

Colin Jost joked he and his wife Scarlett Johansson should combine their box office hauls so she can reclaim her highest-grossing actor title from Zoe Saldana. Scarlett, 41, was dethroned by co-Marvel star Zoe, 47, thanks latter’s latest role in Avatar: Fire and Ash, taking her from third to first on the list of top-grossing film stars with a reported total of $16,859,193,100 at the worldwide box office, with Johansson now sitting at number two with a reported $16,435,483,784. And 43-year-old comedian Colin – who has featured in the likes of The Bad Guys 2, Coming 2 America, and Tom + Jerry – could not help but make light of the news during the January 17 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. While a bar graph of the actress’ earnings appeared on-screen, Colin said during the Weekend Update segment of the sketch comedy series: “Zoe Saldana – who stars in the new Avatar movie – has surpassed Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing actress of all time.” He then quipped: “Ok, well let’s see what …

Humanists UK mourns patron Colin Pickthall (1944–2025) – Humanists UK

Humanists UK is saddened to learn of the death of its patron, Colin Pickthall, the former Member of Parliament for West Lancashire and a dedicated humanist, aged 81.  Born in 1944, Colin studied English literature and history at the University of Wales before completing an MA at Lancaster with the thesis The Influence of Socialism on 20th Century British Poetry. He was a lecturer, as well as member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament before his election to the UK Parliament in 1992, where he served his constituents until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his parliamentary career, his humanist values were evident in his tireless campaigning for animal welfare and environmental protection. A staunch opponent of hunting and hare coursing, he advocated for a society where kindness and compassion are extended to all sentient beings. So effective was his campaigning that pro-hunt supporters left a dead fox on his doorstep in 2005. He was an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) and a consistent voice for secularism in education. In 2001, Colin …
