Why more Londoners are commuting by river

Why more Londoners are commuting by river

Who hasn’t fantasised about wringing an extra hour out of their day? A ring-fenced pocket of time for unread messages, life admin, summer holiday planning – perhaps even a few pages of a racy thriller. The ‘Power Hour’, popularised by Gretchen Rubin, podcaster and author of The Happiness Project, has become a go-to idea among the intentional living crowd – dedicate a focused hour to the tasks that tend to linger, and feel more in control as a result. In a city where we’re all busy and permanently reachable, it’s no surprise that many of us are asking the same question: Could we be using our time better? Increasingly, the answer isn’t about finding more time, but using our existing time differently. The first hour of the day has become particularly valuable, whether spent planning, catching up or simply easing into the day with a clear head. It’s a small shift in mindset, but one that can have a noticeable impact on how the rest of the day unfolds. For some Londoners, that shift is …

Fuel Crisis Creates Commuter Crush in the Philippines

Fuel Crisis Creates Commuter Crush in the Philippines

Commuting in the Philippines has become extremely chaotic. “When you get on the train, you have to protect yourself so that you don’t get squeezed.” “We call it a sardine situation. It’s becoming unimaginable.” The war in Iran has created a global energy crisis, more than doubling the price at the pump in the Philippines. This has forced people to ditch their cars for public transportation, like trains and popular vehicles called jeepneys, that could typically hold about 20 people. Many are trying to figure out how to navigate massive crowds during rush hour, while saving money. “Excuse me.” These commuters filmed and posted on social media about their new challenging journeys. “I stopped driving. I take the public transportation as a commute.” Stella Kim works for a multinational company in Manila as a project coordinator. Her drive to work was typically about an hour and a half. But then gas prices started to climb. “It just wasn’t worth it. It’s very expensive.” So Kim now hails a motorcycle, and takes a train and jeepney …

Cheaper commuting: the best ways to save on the costs of your travel to work | Saving money

Buy a season ticket For regular rail travellers, season tickets remain one of the biggest cost savers. A weekly, monthly or annual season ticket will work out much cheaper than paying daily fares, especially if you commute most days. For example, to travel from Southampton to London with South Western Railway, an anytime day return costs up to £111 if you do not book in advance. This works out at a whopping £26,085 a year if you travel five days a week, for 47 weeks (this is assuming you have five weeks’ annual leave). A monthly ticket for the same journey costs £592.20 (£7,106 a year), while an annual season ticket costs £6,168. If your commute will involve parking at the station, it’s worth checking if you can buy a season ticket for that, too. Also check if there are local car parks that are cheaper than the one at the station. Spread the cost Season tickets remain one of the biggest cost savers for railway travel. The 10 best travel pillows for long flights and commuting

The 10 best travel pillows for long flights and commuting

When I started working at The Telegraph, I didn’t live in London, where our office is, and found myself commuting for hours everyday. If for nothing else, it was great for sneaking in some extra sleep after an early start, although my neck (and back) were not best pleased with the sedentary lifestyle. Since then, I’ve spent many a train journey testing different travel pillows to find the best. Travel pillows come in all shapes and sizes, some cosy, some cooling, but the best travel pillows support your neck 360 degrees around, to prevent the over-flexing of muscles on any one side. That all round support is particularly crucial for middle or aisle seats, where you have nothing to rest your head against. The best neck pillows for travel also clip onto your backpack or suitcase, so you don’t need to worry about taking up precious room in your luggage. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get it right. The Best Value pillow I tried, from Go Travel, cost just £20. Trtl, Cabeau …

Your Morning Commute Could Be Wreaking Havoc On Your Skin

Your Morning Commute Could Be Wreaking Havoc On Your Skin

The quest for healthy, glowing skin can feel challenging during the winter months, with cold temperatures, icy winds, and dry indoor heating stripping the skin of moisture, leaving it dull, dehydrated, and more prone to irritation. But it’s not just the weather working against us, with our daily commutes also taking a toll. It could actually be causing some significant damage and it’s important that we know how to treat it. Louise Walsh from Savoo, also known as The Skin Nurse, reveals the biggest things to watch out for, as well as simple skin remedies, and the common mistakes that so many of us make that could be leading to issues! How does a typical daily commute impact our skin, particularly in busy cities? She says: “a daily commute exposes the skin to multiple stressors at once, including pollution, temperature changes, wind, and low humidity. In busy cities, pollution particles settle on the skin and trigger inflammation, while moving between cold outdoor air and heated indoor spaces weakens the skin barrier. Over time, this can …

The best bike lights for commuting and weekend rides

The best bike lights for commuting and weekend rides

The genuinely impressive Super Bright light from Exposure is the headlamp I’d buy for my bicycle if I ever went on the long adventures I plan in my head. As it stands, I rarely cycle further than the supermarket, and this extra-bright version of the Strada MK12 (reviewed above) is overkill. At 1,700 lumens, it feels like the headlamp on a small motorcycle, properly lighting up paths that are otherwise pitch black. Like the RS we tested, the SB has several modes and a handy remote button that plugs into the charging port. The shape of the beam, which has been made to resemble that of a car headlight, provides excellent forward illumination while also making your position known to cars far away – useful if you plan to ride on rural B-roads, less so if you live in the suburbs. For casual users, this is too powerful and expensive, but for serious cyclists in need of better illumination of dark roads, it’s difficult to beat even at this price point.  With a reputation for …
