Novel insulation concepts for liquefied hydrogen tanks

Novel insulation concepts for liquefied hydrogen tanks

NICOLHy investigates concepts on Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) for the economic and safe thermal insulation of large-scale liquefied hydrogen tanks. Europe’s transition in energy imports and storage faces a critical challenge: how can hydrogen be stored and transported safely and efficiently on a large scale? While pipelines and geological storage for gaseous hydrogen are only partially available, liquefied hydrogen (LH₂) is increasingly coming into focus. With its high volumetric energy density, LH₂ is the preferred solution for international transport by ship – and could revolutionise the global transport of energy. Why liquid hydrogen? Among the hydrogen derivatives, LH₂ offers decisive advantages. It is extremely clean, requires no chemical conversion processes, which offers high process chain efficiency as well as reliability, is non-toxic, and probably enables the use of existing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure. This makes LH₂ a key contributor to Europe’s energy supply security. However, one major obstacle remains: large-scale LH₂ storage tanks do not yet exist, and current technologies are difficult to scale and costly. The solution LH₂ and LNG are stored at …

Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code and Misunderstands Basic Machine Learning Concepts

Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code and Misunderstands Basic Machine Learning Concepts

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO and the public face of ChatGPT, has carved out an image for himself as one of the preeminent AI whisperers of our age, whose influence supposedly extends to the White House on the strength of his ideas alone. Or at least that’s the image he’s managed to cultivate. A new exposé in the New Yorker paints a different portrait, and it’s substantially more vexing. Drawing on interviews with numerous OpenAI insiders who worked with Altman, the article portrays the CEO not as a technical wiz, but as a skilled manipulator — and one with a surprisingly shallow grasp of the AI systems his company is building. According to numerous engineers interviewed for the article, Altman lacks experience in both programming and in machine learning — a shortage of expertise that becomes obvious when the CEO mixes up basic AI terms. It’s important to note that Altman dropped out of a Stanford computer science program after …

Crazy concepts, wonderful laptops, and amazing smartphones

Crazy concepts, wonderful laptops, and amazing smartphones

I’m always super excited about MWC, the world’s largest mobile-focused tech event. Hosted in Barcelona, Spain, MWC attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year and is often where tech companies launch their newest smartphones, tablets, and more. MWC 2026 has delivered the goods, and these are the best bits of hardware we’ve seen while stalking its enormous halls. Lenovo ThinkBook Modular AI PC Concept Building on previous designs, but much more powerful Lenovo has been toying with modular designs for a little while now, showing us laptops with an array of magnetic attachments at MWC 2025. It has now taken that idea to a whole new level with the ThinkBook Modular AI PC Concept, which combines an ultra-thin 14-inch laptop with an integrated secondary display that can be mounted on the base device or placed alongside for a second screen to massively expand your screensize when you’re on the go. The total combined viewing area can expand up to 19 inches, a huge expansion on the base 14-inch screen. It has other modular elements, too, …

Lenovo’s Latest Wacky Concepts Include a Laptop With a Built-in Portable Monitor

Do you like having a second screen with your computer setup? What if your laptop could carry a second screen for you? That’s the idea behind Lenovo’s latest proof of concept, the ThinkBook Modular AI PC, announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Lenovo is never shy to show off wacky, weird concept laptops. We’ve seen a PC with a transparent screen, one with a rollable OLED screen, a swiveling screen, and another with a flippy screen. At CES earlier this year, the company showed off a gaming laptop with a display that expands at the push of a button. Sometimes, these concepts turn into real products that go on sale (often in limited quantities). At MWC 2026, Lenovo trotted out three concepts. While it’s unclear whether any of them will become real, purchasable products, there’s some unique utility here, and a peek at how computing experiences could change in the future. A Laptop With a Built-In Portable Screen The ThinkBook Modular AI PC has a second screen hanging magnetically off the back of the …

Best of MWC 2026: Live updates on phones, concepts, and robots we’re seeing

By Kerry Wan, Editor in Chief / Mar. 1 We’re officially on Day 2 of what I’ll call “MWC Preview Weekend,” and Honor is leading the news wave today with its AI Vision keynote. There, the company announced several new hardware products, including some fresh information on its wild Robot Phone, which debuted at CES. The Robot Phone may be the richest embodiment of AI in a handset that we’ve seen thus far, for better or worse. It’s shaped like a traditional phone, with a slab-like design, but features a rotating camera gimbal that extends from the back of the device. CNET: A Phone With a Robot Arm? I Got a First Glimpse at Honor’s Quirky Camera Phone There are some creative use cases with such a feature, like body-tracking during video calls and more stabilized recording. Then, there are some more questionable use cases, like its playful nods and head shakes (and Honor says it can even dance to music), that give it more personality. Because we all want our phones to have a little more …

Best of MWC 2026: Live updates on phones, concepts, and innovations we’re seeing

Kerry Wan/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 is shaping up to be a landmark event. Coming quickly after the latest flagship reveals from Samsung and Google, the Barcelona showcase is ready to pivot the conversation toward the breakthrough trends and hardware innovations that will define the rest of the year, and ZDNET is on the ground with front-row seats. Also: What to expect at MWC 2026: Best phones I’m anticipating from Xiaomi, Motorola, and more As is tradition, industry giants like Xiaomi and Honor are set to dominate the exhibition floor, with their own keynotes scheduled for the weekend. While Google and Samsung will maintain their own presence, the focus will likely be on ecosystem integration rather than major new hardware. Of course, the real magic of MWC often lies in the “showstopper” — that unexpected, boundary-pushing reveal that catches the entire industry off guard. We’ll be on the lookout for that over the coming days, as the showfloor officially opens on Monday, March 2, and runs through the rest …

hyper-rational but stumped by simple concepts

hyper-rational but stumped by simple concepts

A new study suggests that artificial intelligence systems approach strategic decision-making with a higher degree of mathematical optimization than human players, often outperforming humans in games requiring iterative reasoning. While these large language models demonstrate an ability to adapt to complex rules and specific competitive scenarios, they differ fundamentally from human cognition by failing to identify certain logical shortcuts known as dominant strategies. The findings appear in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. Large language models are advanced artificial intelligence systems designed to process and generate text based on vast datasets. These models are increasingly integrated into economic workflows, ranging from market analysis to automated negotiation agents. As these tools become more prevalent in settings that involve social interaction and competition, it becomes necessary to understand how their decision-making processes compare to human behavior. Previous psychological and economic research indicates that humans often rely on bounded rationality, meaning their strategic thinking is limited by cognitive capacity and time. Iuliia Alekseenko, Dmitry Dagaev, Sofiia Paklina, and Petr Parshakov conducted this study to determine if artificial …
