‘Stop hiring humans’? Silicon Valley confronts AI job panic

“PRETTY UNSETTLING” The debate remains heated. Two years ago, Nvidia chief Jensen Huang declared that the ultimate goal was to make it so “nobody has to programme” or code. “We will look back on that as some of the worst career advice ever given,” Andrew Ng, founder of training platform DeepLearning.AI, shot back on Tuesday. In his view, coding is not an obsolete skill – AI has simply made it available to more people. Another argument has taken hold in Silicon Valley: interpersonal skills will become more valuable than ever, with some voices going so far as to tout a humanities education as sound tech career preparation. “As AI can do more of a job, the things that will distinguish and differentiate a given employee are going to be the human skills – critical thinking, communication, teamwork,” said Greg Hart, chief executive of training platform Coursera, which has seen enrollment in its critical thinking courses triple over the past year. Florian Douetteau, chief executive of Dataiku, a French company specialising in enterprise AI, agreed. The …

Laura Kuenssberg Confronts Iranian Ambassador Over Protester Killings

Laura Kuenssberg has confronted a senior Iranian officials over his government’s killing of thousands of protesters. Up to 36,500 civilians are estimated to have been murdered by the regime following by ordinary people an uprising in January. On the BBC this morning, Kuenssberg asked Seyed Ali Mousavi, Iran’s ambassador to the UK, how he could justify his government’s brutality towards its own people. She said: “Since we last spoke, your government has killed thousands of its own people in the streets who had the courage to stand up to protest against the suffering that they have been experiencing at the hands of the regime. “Thousands of people were killed. How on earth do you justify that, ambassador?” Ali Mousavi admitted Iran “has our own problems”, which he blamed on western sanctions imposed on the country. And he insisted all Iranians were now united following the military action launched on the country by America and Israel. He said: “Our people are in a very painful and sensitive period of time, but they are supporting the government …

Channel 4 Reporter Confronts Israeli Official Over Iran Strikes

Channel 4 Reporter Confronts Israeli Official Over Iran Strikes

A reporter told an Israeli spokesperson his country does not have the “moral high ground” following the joint Israel-US strikes on Iran. Israel said the attacks were “pre-emptive” to stop Iran acquiring nuclear weapons and firing at their own country. Meanwhile, when he announced the bombing over the weekend, US president Donald Trump said his objective was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime”. The strikes took out Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes on Israel and US bases across the Middle East. Standing outside one of the targeted buildings in Tel Aviv, Israel’s foreign affairs spokesperson Oren Marmorstein began criticising the Iranian attacks. But reporter Secunder Kermani from Channel 4 News said: “Khamenei, the Iranian regime, have clearly done terrible things, particularly to their own people, but your prime minister is a wanted war criminal.” The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu in late 2024, saying he was a co-perpetrator for war crimes including starvation and crimes against …

African Union Summit confronts worsening conflicts

African Union Summit confronts worsening conflicts

Sudan’s civil war has emerged as the most pressing issue at the African Union summit. After nearly three years of fighting, tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 11 million forced from their homes, prompting the United Nations to describe the situation as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Despite this, a clear path to resolution remains elusive, and diplomats warn that the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates continues to overshadow the conflict while also fuelling wider regional tensions, including in Libya and between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the host nation where the summit opened on Saturday, as Nick Rushworth reports. Keir Starmer Confronts Critical 2026 Make Or Break Year

Keir Starmer Confronts Critical 2026 Make Or Break Year

In his New Year message to voters, Keir Starmer said: “By staying the course, we will defeat the decline and division offered by others.” As his leadership rivals circle, the prime minister may well have been addressing his fractious MPs as much as the country at large. Be in no doubt that the mood among the Parliamentary Labour Party is grim, with their anger being directed at what they see as a misfiring No.10 operation. This week’s row over the release of Alaa Abd El-Fattah merely served to confirm what Starmer’s critics already believed, that there is no political problem that the PM and those around him cannot make worse. Following the British-Egyptian pro-democracy activist’s release from jail, the prime minister posted on X: “I’m delighted that Alaa Abd El-Fattah is back in the UK and has been reunited with his loved ones, who must be feeling profound relief. “I want to pay tribute to Alaa’s family, and to all those that have worked and campaigned for this moment. Alaa’s case has been a top …
