UK police arrest 2 in connection with weekend arson attack on synagogue

LONDON (AP) — British police said Monday they arrested two teenagers in connection with an arson attack on a synagogue in northwest London over the weekend, as Jewish leaders express concern about a wave of incidents targeting their community. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes of London’s Metropolitan Police Service said officers arrested two young men, aged 19 and 17, overnight in relation to the attack on the Kenton United Synagogue in the borough of Harrow. ‘Seeking connection’: the video game where players stopped shooting and started talking | Games

The video game Arc Raiders is set in a lethal imagining of an apocalyptic future for humanity. Survivors have been forced to live deep underground in colonies while mysterious, murderous AI machines patrol the surface. Only the desolate ruins of former cities survive, and reckless human “raiders” take trips topside to conduct dangerous scavenging missions. For all the menace of these armed robots, called Arcs, the deadly droids are not the biggest threat in this hugely popular game, which was released late last year and has sold more than 14m copies. Raiders operate with the constant anxiety that another person will shoot them on sight and steal their loot. Mercilessness is rewarded in this kind of competitive, high-stakes world. So it has come as a jolt to the game’s developers at Embark Studios in Sweden that many players are not shooting at each other at all. “It caught us a little bit by surprise,” says executive producer Aleksander Grøndal, who has found that many people play “a more peaceful version of the game than we …

Pope Leo will encounter a distinct example of Catholic-Muslim connection in Algeria

Pope Leo will encounter a distinct example of Catholic-Muslim connection in Algeria

(RNS) — Pope Leo XIV arrived in Algeria on Monday (April 13), bringing attention to its little-known interfaith organizations and efforts that have been functioning discretely for many years. They help comprise a unique manifestation of faith in a country — Africa’s largest in area — where fewer than 1% of the nation’s nearly 48 million people are Christian. One is the Focolare movement, a spiritual unity network that came to Muslim-majority Algeria in 1966. Modeled after an Italian lay Catholic movement, its activities are animated by Muslim members, mostly women, participating in small groups across the country, whether helping at local elderly centers, tutoring students or learning together. The late Chiara Lubich founded Focolare (Italian for “hearth”) in 1943, out of her experience finding community among strangers sheltering underground during bombing raids over Trento, Italy, during World War II. Pope Paul VI recognized it in 1964 as a private, universal association with the formal name “The Work of Mary,” to emphasize dedication to selfless love. The once-local group spread worldwide under Lubich’s charismatic influence. …
