Chelsea seek to turn corner after 7-0 FA Cup thrashing of Port Vale

LONDON, April 4 : Chelsea are hoping that Saturday’s 7-0 thrashing of lowly Port Vale in an FA Cup quarter-final draws a line under a dismal run of form and internal upheaval that has threatened to ruin the season of the big-spending Londoners.  The build-up to the tie had been dominated by Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior’s announcement on Friday that club vice captain and record signing Enzo Fernandez would be suspended for two games after suggesting he might leave. Chelsea have been enveloped in a sense of crisis since their 8-2 aggregate drubbing in the Champions League by European champions Paris St Germain and domestic league defeats to Newcastle United and Everton over a fraught 10 days in March. So Saturday’s goal bonanza – albeit against a struggling Port Vale side who look certain to be relegated to the fourth tier of English football soon – at least managed to restore some smiles to the faces of Chelsea’s players and fans. “When you go through a difficult moment that we did in that 10-day period, …

HERB’S CORNER | Welcome to Holy War Land

HERB’S CORNER | Welcome to Holy War Land

A prime is a number whose only divisors are 1 and itself. The complete history of even primes is very short: the number 2. An argument can be made that the even prime is all that’s needed for the complete history of “just wars:” World War 2. But I’m not as confident about there being only one just war as I am about only one even prime. The word “just” is not as well defined as “prime.” No country, no matter how terrible its government, goes to war thinking its cause is unjust. While wars are viewed as “just” going in, the story is often different going out. At that point, people can easily judge a war to have been unjust, but they can’t bring back the lives of those who died in an unjust war. Any criteria for a “just war” will always have close calls. When the call is close, I would rather err on the side of it not being “just” enough to enter. It’s easier to count the number of just …

Ed Miliband says Labour will ‘fight people’s corner’ on energy costs – but he doesn’t say how | Politics News

The energy secretary has told Sky News that the government will “fight people’s corner” as the war in Iran threatens a fresh energy price crisis. But, speaking to Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Ed Miliband refused to be drawn on what support the government may provide. Politics latest: Iran war threatens to raise UK energy bills Mr Miliband said: “We’re going to fight people’s corner… when it comes to the effects on them. That’s why this week, we’ve been saying to the petrol retailers, the heating oil companies, we’re not going to tolerate price gouging. We’re not going to tolerate unfair practices. “Some people don’t like that. But that’s tough.” He added: “I’m not going to speculate on how help will be provided if we do, if we make further interventions”. Sky News understands the government will announce a support package as early as Monday for the poorest households that use heating oil. Beyond help for oil customers, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is holding off on anything else for now. While many homes in the UK …

Mélenchon’s attempt to embody an ‘antifascist arc’ backs the rest of the left into a corner

Mélenchon’s attempt to embody an ‘antifascist arc’ backs the rest of the left into a corner

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, at a rally in Lyon, on February 26, 2026. BRUNO AMSELLEM/DIVERGENCE FOR LE MONDE Did the second round of the 2027 presidential election begin on February 14, 2026, after far-right activist Quentin Deranque died in the city of Lyon? It seems that a face-off between the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) and radical left La France Insoumise (LFI) parties is taking shape, one that the far right has dreamed of and Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s LFI has theorized about for several years, under the slogan of “them against us.” Since the tragic incident occurred in Lyon, the far right, the right and part of President Emmanuel Macron’s party have seized on it as an opportunity to cast Mélenchon as the republic’s new political pariah, calling for forming a “united front” against him. This anti-LFI front, a complete reversal of the traditional republican front against the far right, is not, however, something Mélenchon seems bothered by. This waterlogged corner of England was once only habitable during summer. Climate change could make it so again

This waterlogged corner of England was once only habitable during summer. Climate change could make it so again

Standing on the hills looking out across flat green fields, linked by a network of hedgerows, copses and small settlements, the Somerset Levels looks like quintessential English countryside. But this region’s rivers, drains, waterways and wetlands are integral to the levels’ history – an inhospitable, and at times perilously flooded, watery world, centuries ago only habitable during the summer months. Right now, the levels are experiencing extensive flooding, stretching for miles on all sides of any roads that are still open to vehicles. Communities are trying to cope with a relentlessly wet winter halting transport, closing schools and leaving homes underwater, underpinned by a longer-term cycle of climate and sea-level change. This part of south-west England, much of which is currently under water, used to be known as the “land of the summer people”. Historically, frequent flooding was the main reason for purely seasonal occupation in this area bordered by the Bristol Channel and the Mendip, Quantock and Blackdown Hills. Drier summers provided valuable grazing land and plentiful resources such as fish, peat, wildfowl and …

The Day Princess Elizabeth Became Queen Elizabeth: How ‘Operation Hyde Park Corner’ Unfolded

The Day Princess Elizabeth Became Queen Elizabeth: How ‘Operation Hyde Park Corner’ Unfolded

It was February 6, 1952, when Prince Philip told his wife, who we now know as Queen Elizabeth, that her father King George VI had died. Although the King had suffered from a prolonged illness, the moment still came as a profound shock to the 25-year-old Princess, who had to mourn her dear ‘Papa’ while facing the realization that she was now Queen. To make matters more complicated, the royal couple were in Kenya at the time. Just a week earlier, King George VI had bid daughter and son-in-law farewell for what was intended to be a six-month tour of the Commonwealth. The King himself had been due to undertake the international journey but had to withdraw due to ill health; he was suffering from lung cancer. After three days in Nairobi, the couple drove up to Sagana Lodge, a property in the foothills of Mount Kenya that was given to them …

Rod Stewart shares rare glimpse of ornate corner of £4m Essex mansion with Penny Lancaster

Sir Rod Stewart, 81, has quite the place to call home with his wife, Penny Lancaster, 54. The couple, who have been married since 2007, purchased their 18th-century Grade II listed manor in 2013, and since then, the rocker has shared only rare glimpses inside the property.  But in a new video message, the Maggie May singer has unveiled another corner of the house, which seemingly has a subtle tribute to his loved ones. On 25 January, the rocker took to Instagram to film his response to US President Donald Trump’s remark about Nato troops avoiding the frontlines in Afghanistan.  While voicing his opinion on the matter, the rocker stood in front of an ornate background from inside his home. The wallpapered corner featured vintage candelabras that were mounted on either side of a golden-framed piece of artwork above a fireplace.  When the singer moved out of the frame, the background put two framed photographs on the mantel behind him into focus. While the pictures aren’t perfectly clear, they appear to include the rocker and …

iPhone 18 Pro: Dynamic Island May Move to Top-Left Screen Corner

iPhone 18 Pro: Dynamic Island May Move to Top-Left Screen Corner

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models will have a front camera cutout in the top-left corner of the screen alongside a new under-display Face ID system, which will see the Dynamic Island software feature relocated to the same corner. That’s according to the latest YouTube video from Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser. Introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island is the pill-shaped interactive area centered at the top of the screen that expands and contracts to display ongoing activities, while effectively hiding the front camera and Face ID sensor cutouts. Prosser claims that Apple’s new under-screen Face ID system will sit next to a top-left camera cutout, meaning the Dynamic Island no longer needs to be centered at the top. Instead, he claims it will likewise shift to the top left – where the time is shown on current iPhones – and periodically fly out from the corner to encompass the upper portion of the screen, allowing it to functionally remain the same. There are several rumors suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone …

Asylum seeker threatens preacher with knife at Speaker’s Corner | UK | News

An asylum seeker from Sudan faces jail after brandishing a knife at a man preaching Christianity at Speakers’ Corner. Ahmed Mohammed, 35, confronted Daniel Ayettey as he preached to a crowd from a ladder in Hyde Park‘s famous landmark, where open air public speaking is permitted. Mohammed and Mr Ayettey clashed over religion on May 25 when the Sudanese national asked the preacher: “What would you like to happen in my life?” Mr Ayettey replied: “I would like to have the Lord in your life.” Witnesses said Mohammed then tried to drag Mr Ayettey down before he ran off. He returned with a knife, telling the preacher: “I am going to stab you.” Nicholas Mesure, prosecuting, told Southwark Crown Court Mr Ayettey’s response seemed to be the catalyst as it very quickly changed Mr Mohammed’s demeanour and he became very angry. He added: “There were a number of people, including Muslims, who were aware of Mr Mohammed and they tried to persuade Mr Ayettey not to call the police.” But Mr Mesure said officers did …
