Critically endangered Borneo orangutan born at Madrid zoo

Critically endangered Borneo orangutan born at Madrid zoo

A critically endangered Borneo orangutan has been born at Madrid’s zoo, described by keepers as strong and developing normally. After an eight-and-a-half-month pregnancy, mother Surya gave birth to a male weighing about 1.5 kilos on April 2, the Madrid Zoo Aquarium said in a statement. The zoo released a video showing Surya cradling the newborn, which will be named through a public vote from a list of options proposed by the caretakers. Surya has now given birth to four offspring, with keepers describing her maternal care from the outset as exemplary, and the baby feeding regularly, a key indicator of healthy development. She stays completely still until he finishes, and only then moves to eat or do anything else. She is a real supermom,” said Maica …

Art teacher critically injured by student in southern France school stabbing

A 14-year-old school student stabbed an art teacher in southern France on Tuesday, leaving the 60-year-old in critical condition, a prosecutor said. The pupil stabbed the teacher at least three times and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, said Raphael Balland, the public prosecutor in the southern city of Toulon. There were no known “religious or political connotations” at this stage, Balland said. “All we know is that there had been tensions with this teacher recently, and that he was angry with her,” the prosecutor added during a press briefing. France’s education minister, Edouard Geffray, headed to La Guicharde secondary school, where the stabbing took place, in the town of Sanary-sur-Mer. “My thoughts immediately go out to the victim, her family and the entire educational community, whose deep shock I share,” he wrote on X. President Emmanuel Macron was being kept up to date on the teacher’s condition, presidential aides said. France has seen a series of incidents in which pupils have attacked teachers or other schoolchildren. A 14-year-old schoolboy was last year …

The specimens discovered in five caves near the city of Arar in northern Saudi Arabia offer a glimpse of hope for reintroducing the species to the Arabian Peninsula. The findings are described in a study published today in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. Cheetahs once lived in much of Africa, and Western and Southern Asia, but their range in Asia has decreased by 98 percent over the past several thousand years. As a whole, cheetahs only occupy nine percent of the territory they used to. On the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait) cheetahs were found as recently as 1977, when a hunter in Oman killed an adult female cheetah. However, the animals are now considered locally extinct in the region. There are five cheetah subspecies, and the Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is believed to have been the only …

2026 is off to a hopeful start for these critically endangered whales

While most of us were feasting on holiday foods over the past few weeks, the New England Aquarium was busy counting North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) mom-calf pairs off the coast of Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.  “Congrats to all of these North Atlantic right whale moms!” reads a social media post by the aquarium highlighting six recent sightings, including Juno—an over 40-year-old mother with her ninth documented calf spotted on December 27.  Juno (Catalog #1612) and her 2026 calf, sighted on December 27, 2025, approximately 7.8nm east of Wassaw Island, Georgia. Channel 4 adds all 7 seasons of critically acclaimed medical drama – and it’s perfect for fans of House

Channel 4 adds all 7 seasons of critically acclaimed medical drama – and it’s perfect for fans of House

Medical dramas are one of my favourite kind of shows, the life-or-death situations faced by the doctors and nurses gives you the thrill, but I also love shows that delve into the lives of the characters. I have binge-watched the likes of House, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy and Casualty, and Channel 4 has just added all seven seasons of what will turn into my next obsession, Nurse Jackie. The drama follows Jackie Peyton, played by Edie Falco, an emergency department nurse at the fictional All Saint Hospital. The character is billed as someone who is seen arguing with doctors and “abusing painkillers”, similar to Doctor Gregory House in the iconic series, which can also be streamed on Channel 4. However, while House’s addiction to Vicodin was mostly played for laughs, Jackie’s addiction is presented more seriously, with the character seen going to extreme lengths to fuel her addiction. The synopsis on Channel 4 for the show reads: “Welcome to Manhattan’s All Saints Hospital. Meet Jackie, whose unorthodox brand of emergency healthcare includes forging donor …
