Curbing social media to protect kids online could backfire

Almost everyone who is glued to their phone wishes they weren’t and for many people, the problem seems to be starting earlier. Children’s access to the internet is happening at younger ages, with an entire generation growing up alongside the rapid advancement of the digital landscape, which has only intensified with the advent of artificial intelligence. Teens and adults alike can be exposed to extremist content, violence and sexual exploitation online. The internet age has had countless positive impacts on society, but also undeniable negative impacts. Some critics say social media addiction and worsened teen mental health are direct consequences of these platform’s design. Now they’re taking major tech companies to court — and winning. Meta plans to appeal the verdicts in both cases. What complicates the social media trials is there are bona fide problems young people face when logging …

One country is trying to outlaw political lying, without curbing free speech

For the past two years, the Welsh parliament – or Senedd – has been grappling with how to tackle deliberate lying by politicians and how to rebuild public trust in democracy. There is broad agreement across parties in Wales that the current system offers few real consequences for dishonesty. As one Senedd member put it: “Lying flourishes in politics because we can get away with it”. That frustration has now translated into legislative action. A bill that would make it illegal to make false or misleading statements during Welsh election campaigns has passed its first stage in the Senedd. But while the principle behind the law commands support, the detail – and the speed at which it is being pushed forward – has triggered growing unease. The proposed ban will not be ready in time for the next Welsh election in May. Minh Connors/AP hide caption toggle caption Minh Connors/AP The Trump administration is ratcheting up the pressure on immigration courts and judges as it moves toward further constricting the due process available for immigrants. Court employees and judges at the San Francisco Immigration Court received a short email last week letting them know that their court will be shutting its doors by the end of the year. All personnel will be transferred to the Concord Immigration Court, about 30 miles away, according to the email sent by Teresa Riley, the chief immigration judge, and obtained by NPR. The court’s closure comes as immigration judges spent the last year facing pressure to move through their caseloads faster and streamline deportations. “At first it was a message that you better fall in line or you’re going to get fired,” said Jeremiah Johnson, a former immigration judge who worked in San Francisco’s court until his termination last year. Now, “it’s a message that your court is going to …
