Czech Power Company ČEZ Signs Deal With Rolls-Royce SMR to Prepare for First Small Nuclear Reactor

ČEZ chief executive Daniel Beneš said that the work includes the project plan and licensing documentation necessary for issuing building permits for the reactor. Beneš said the company hopes to have all the approvals by 2030. The small nuclear reactor will be built at the site of the existing Temelín nuclear plant. On April 13, Great Britain Energy – Nuclear, a government agency, inked a contract with Rolls-Royce SMR to begin design work for the first small nuclear reactors in the U.K. Beneš said that the Czech small nuclear reactor will be the second one built by the British firm after the first one is completed in the U.K. ČEZ has a 20% share in Rolls-Royce SMR and the companies had signed a deal about a strategic partnership, which should result in up to 3 gigawatt energy sources installed in the Czech Republic. The Czech state has an almost 70% stake in ČEZ and the government is taking steps to acquire full control of the company. Small modular reactors are a type of nuclear reactor …

Czech startup lets factory workers teach robots by demonstration

A Czech startup is making factory automation easier by letting workers teach robots new tasks through simple demonstrations instead of complex coding, as Anthony King explores. What if training a robot to handle dirty, dangerous work on the factory floor was as simple as showing it how? Czech startup RoboTwin is doing exactly that, helping factory workers teach robots new skills by demonstration. Instead of writing complex code, workers perform the job once and RoboTwin’s technology turns those movements into a robot programme – opening the door to automation for smaller manufacturers. Founded in Prague in 2021, RoboTwin builds handheld devices and no-code software that capture human movements and translate them into instructions for industrial robots. The aim is to make automation faster, simpler and more accessible to manufacturers that do not have specialist robotics programmers. “The robot basically copies the human demonstration,” said Megi Mejdrechová, RoboTwin’s co-founder and chief technology officer. “People with no coding skills can transfer their know-how and experience to robots.” Mejdrechová, a mechanical engineer trained at the Czech Technical University …

Czech Government Caps Fuel Prices And Cuts Diesel Tax To Combat Surging Costs At The Pump

By Thomas Brooke of RMX news, The Czech government has moved to cap fuel prices and slash diesel taxes in an effort to curb rising costs due to the ongoing international energy crisis, announcing a system that will see the state set maximum daily prices for fuel across the country. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said the intervention follows concerns that fuel retailers were charging excessive margins, despite earlier pressure from the government to bring prices down voluntarily. Under the new system, the Ministry of Finance will determine a maximum fuel price each day, applying to all gas stations nationwide. Officials estimated that diesel, if the cap came into force on Thursday, would currently be capped at 46.43 Czech crowns per liter, or around €1.89. “We monitored the margins and at the beginning of the conflict they were within the norm, but gradually they became excessive,” Babiš said, adding that negotiations with distributors had only partially reduced prices. “We decided to intervene.” The government will also introduce a cap on retailer margins, setting the maximum allowable …

Czech Culture Minister Dismisses Director of Prague’s National Gallery

Czech Culture Minister Dismisses Director of Prague’s National Gallery

Czech culture minister Oto Klempíř dismissed Alicja Knast from her post as director of Prague’s National Gallery, generating scrutiny over what precipitated the decision. Within the Czech Republic, the dismissal has been viewed by some as a politically motivated gesture. Knast took up the position in 2021, having been appointed to the role by Lubomir Zaoralek, a Social Democrat who was then serving as culture minister. Klempíř, a member of the right-wing Motorists party, became culture minister last year. Related Articles Before becoming culture minister, Klempíř was the lead singer of the funk rock band J.A.R. Many artists in the Czech Republic have raised concerns about his ability to allocate funds appropriately. “A culture minister should safeguard the independence and diversity of artistic production, not undermine it,” read a 2025 open letter signed by artists such as Eva Koťátková, who represented the nation at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Klempíř did not offer a formal explanation for his removal of Knast. A release from the Czech culture ministry said that the dismissal was done in order …

Czech Parliament Votes to Shield PM Babis From Trial on EU Subsidy Fraud Charges

Czech Parliament Votes to Shield PM Babis From Trial on EU Subsidy Fraud Charges

PRAGUE, March 5 (Reuters) – The lower house of the Czech parliament voted on Thursday to deny a court request for billionaire businessman and Prime Minister Andrej Babis to face trial in long-running prosecution over an alleged fraud in drawing ‌a European Union subsidy. Babis, head ‌of the populist ANO party, returned to power after winning an election in October last year, despite charges in the case involving a 2 million euro subsidy granted in 2008, before he entered politics, for building a hotel and conference centre outside Prague called Stork Nest. Deputies for ANO and ruling coalition partners, the far right, pro-Russian SPD party and the anti-Green Deal Motorists, voted on Thursday not to lift parliamentary immunity from Babis, voting records showed. The vote means Babis is protected from prosecution in the case until the end of the parliament’s four-year term in 2029.  (Reporting by Jan Lopatka; editing by Edward Tobin) Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters. Ukraine Got 4.4 Million Large-Calibre Rounds Under Czech Initiative, President Says

PRAGUE, Feb 16 (Reuters) – Ukraine has received 4.4 million rounds of large-calibre ammunition under a plan pulling together Czech arms traders and producers and funding from foreign donors, ‌President Petr Pavel told ‌a Czech news website in an interview. Pavel has been a strong backer of the scheme which includes Czech defence officials and defence firms sourcing 155mm and other large-calibre ammunition around the world, purchasing it and shipping to Ukraine with funds from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and other donors.  The new Czech government of Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ populist ANO party, including the pro-Russian far-right SPD, had considered scrapping the initiative but agreed under pressure from Pavel and allies to continue the plan, although it said it would not give any national funding for the purchases.   “Since its launch the initiative has brought about 4.4 million pieces of large-calibre ammunition to Ukraine,” Pavel, a former senior NATO official, told the odkryto.cz website. “Without this ammunition reserve, Ukraine’s armed forces could not effectively lead defence.” Pavel said nearly 2 million rounds were delivered …

Czech rift deepens as president accuses foreign minister of ‘blackmail’ – POLITICO

Macinka added that the president will be “surprised by the consequences” if he “does nothing, or at least refuses to enter into negotiations over Turek,” adding that “he is ready to brutally fight with the president for Turek.” Pavel, who holds veto power over ministerial appointments, blocked Turek from becoming environment minister over his embroilment in various scandals. “I consider the foreign minister’s words in the text messages to be an attempt at blackmail. I regard that as unacceptable and, under our democratic conditions, absolutely intolerable,” Pavel said in a press conference Tuesday. Pavel, who published the text messages addressed to his adviser, said he will contact the police, which confirmed it has received the report. Speaking at a press conference Tuesday, Macinka rejected claims of blackmail, accused the president of overstepping constitutional limits by vetoing Turek and threatened Pavel’s participation in July’s NATO summit. ‘Hostage to personal animosities’ Turek, honorary president of the right-wing populist Motorists for Themselves party from which Macinka also hails, has been investigated for sexual assault, racist, sexist, and homophobic …
