OpenAI debated calling police about suspected Canadian shooter’s chats

An 18-year-old who allegedly killed eight people in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, reportedly used OpenAI’s ChatGPT in ways that alarmed the company’s staff. Jesse Van Rootselaar’s chats describing gun violence were flagged by tools that monitor the company’s LLM for misuse and banned in June 2025. Staff at the company debated whether or not to reach out to Canadian law enforcement over the behavior but ultimately did not, according to the Wall Street Journal. An OpenAI spokesperson said Van Rootselaar’s activity did not meet the criteria for reporting to law enforcement; the company reached out to Canadian authorities after the incident. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Tumbler Ridge tragedy,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement. “We proactively reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with information on the individual and their use of ChatGPT, and we’ll continue to support their investigation.” ChatGPT transcripts weren’t the only concerning part of Van Rootselaar’s digital footprint. She apparently created a game on Roblox, the world simulation platform frequented by children, …

Environment issues have never been so fiercely debated in a Welsh election campaign as they will be in 2026

Environment issues have never been so fiercely debated in a Welsh election campaign as they will be in 2026

Wales prides itself in being a pioneer in environmental policy. It was the first country in the world to adopt a statutory duty for public bodies to make development sustainable, in 2015. Yet, environmental issues have rarely featured prominently in elections to the Senedd (the Welsh parliament). This year is different. Issues including windfarms, expansion of pylons and support for farmers are already starting to be fiercely debated. For the first time, Reform UK is a major player in Welsh politics, and is using the urban-rural divide as part of its messaging. Recent polling has been suggesting that Senedd control could be a close fought battle between Reform and Plaid Cymru, a centre-left Welsh nationalist party. But one new poll by YouGov for ITV Cymru Wales and Cardiff University has just suggested Plaid is now pulling ahead, up seven percentage points since September. Analysis suggests this could be most significant election in Wales for 100 …

Only two amendment groups debated despite Lords’ vote for more time on Assisted Dying Bill – Humanists UK

Only two amendment groups debated despite Lords’ vote for more time on Assisted Dying Bill – Humanists UK

Debate in the House of Lords has continued at a glacial pace, with only 2 groups of amendments out of the 74 remaining groups being debated. This is despite peers agreeing to additional time for the Bill to pass, which saw peers from both sides of the debate speaking of the importance of getting the Bill back to the Commons.  This means the fate of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which successfully passed the Commons last year, remains in jeopardy after over 1,100 amendments have been proposed. Humanists UK and My Death, My Decision urge members of the House of Lords to make sure the Bill is returned to the Commons in this parliamentary session. What happens next? Last night’s motion to give more time will now lead to peers entering into private negotiations, known as ‘the usual channels’, about how and when this time will be given. This may involve peers starting early or staying late for the debates, or debating on a Thursday. Lord Falconer and Baroness Smith of Basildon, …
