Analysis-Once Shunned, Activist Investors Dig in to Win in Japan

Analysis-Once Shunned, Activist Investors Dig in to Win in Japan

By Sam Nussey and Anton Bridge TOKYO, April 21 (Reuters) – Activist investors are planning to invest in Japan over the long-term, emboldened by their recent successes in a market where they once got a frosty reception. U.S.-based Elliott Investment Management scored a milestone win against Toyota last month through vocal opposition before striking a deal, signalling how investors are adapting their strategies to tap opportunities being thrown up as the government and regulators push companies to reform. The growing role of activists is in contrast to ‌two decades ago when pioneering efforts by Warren Lichtenstein’s ‌Steel Partners to acquire Bull-Dog Sauce were blocked and the hedge fund dubbed an “abusive acquirer” by a Japanese court. “Activism has moderated how it conducts itself,” said Jeremy White, partner at law firm Morrison Foerster in Tokyo. “And the corporates have moderated in large part because of corporate governance reforms, with more independent directors, and an ethos of more accountability to shareholders.” The surging activist interest promises to keep companies under pressure to change and underscores how Japan …

Zelenskyy Plays His Cards Right With A Sly Dig At Trump

Zelenskyy Plays His Cards Right With A Sly Dig At Trump

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has mocked Donald Trump after the US asked for Ukraine’s help in defeating Iranian drones. The US president humiliated his Ukrainian counterpart in February last year by attacking him in the Oval Office in front of the press. He claimed Zelenskyy did not “hold the cards” when it came to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, suggesting Kyiv needed to compromise against its aggressor in the name of peace. Trump has since withdrawn direct military support for Ukraine amid their wavering alliance, though America does still provide vital intelligence to the beleaguered country. But the US is now combating the same Iranian drones in the Middle East that Ukrainians have been taking down for more than four years. After “requests from the American side,” Zelenskyy said last week that he would deploy Ukrainian specialists to assist. In a new interview, the Ukrainian president said it was a “good feeling” now the tables have turned. He said: “We’re proud that we can help American partners.” Asked if he would say Ukraine has the cards now, Zelenskyy …

Starmer blasted again by Trump in huge dig as Iran war tensions erupt | Politics | News

Donald Trump has seemingly taken another brutal dig at Sir Keir Starmer as tensions over persistent US strikes on Iran threaten to boil over. The UK Prime Minister revealed on Sunday that the US would be allowed to use British bases for “limited” and “defensive” operations. But Mr Trump quickly hit back, claiming Sir Keir’s decision had taken “far too long”. The White House has now made clear the US expects full backing from its European allies as the conflict intensifies. On Wednesday, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said: “I think [Spain] heard the president’s message yesterday, loud and clear, and it’s my understanding, over the past several hours, they’ve agreed to co-operate with the US military.” She added to reporters: “The US military is co-ordinating with their counterparts in Spain. But the president expects all Europe, all of our European allies, of course, to co-operate in this long sought-after mission … to crush the rogue Iranian regime.” The US had wanted to use the base at Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, …

Cruz Beckham’s girlfriend makes thinly veiled dig at Nicola Peltz after attending Victoria’s Paris ceremony

Cruz Beckham’s girlfriend Jackie Apostel has spoken out after Brooklyn’s explosive statement in an apparent aim at Nicola Peltz. The couple attended a special ceremony held to honour his mum Victoria in Paris on Monday, just a week after the Beckham family feud erupted. The fashion designer, 51, headed to the Ministry of Culture in the French capital along with her husband David, 50, and three of their children Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and 14-year-old daughter Harper. As well as Cruz’s partner Jackie, 30, his brother Romeo’s girlfriend Kim Turnbull, 24, was also in attendance. They were assembled to see Victoria accept the prestigious Knight of the National Order of Arts and Letters. It is awarded by the French government to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the arts, literature or culture, and while the Spice Girl bases her design studio in London, she has shown her collections in Paris since 2022.  Following the ceremony – which wasn’t attended by Brooklyn or Nicola – the star posed with David and their children in …
