Basic Instinct Reboot Could Be Directed By Emerald Fennell, Writer Suggests

Emerald Fennell UPDATE: Emerald Fennell denies Basic Instinct reboot rumours. It looks like we know what Emerald Fennell is cooking up as her next project to follow Wuthering Heights. The British filmmaker is currently in talks to helm a reboot of Basic Instinct, screenwriter Joe Eszterhas teased during a new interview with The Guardian. Joe – who penned the script of the original Basic Instinct, as well as the likes of Flashdance and Showgirls – explained he’s almost done with writing a new spin on the original 1992 erotic romance. He claimed: “The producers are negotiating with a really interesting director – a Brit, Emerald Fennell – who did Promising Young Woman and Wuthering Heights.” “Her sensibility is exactly right,” Joe continued. “She’s someone who is not afraid of controversy and sexuality. So I’m thrilled by that. I hope it works out.” After working both behind and in front of the camera on screen, Emerald made her feature-length directing debut in 2020 with Promising Young Woman, which was nominated for five Oscars and won one …

I directed Dirty Business and this is why we need to end water privatisation

My eagle-eyed commissioners Alisa Pomeroy and Rita Daniels sent me their favourite tweet of the night after episode 2 of our new series Dirty Business went to air on Channel 4. A viewer, Josh Folks, had been checking Thames Water sewage dumps from a works in Islip. “If I’d been s**tting into a river non-stop for 966 hours I’d probably have been arrested by now.” Well, yeah. Fair point. You definitely wouldn’t be able to s**t into a river non-stop for 40 days without attracting the interest of the local constabulary. But water companies get away with it. Collectively they dump sewage into rivers and seas 1,600 times a day. The law says the water companies have to treat the sewage to make it safe, before they put it back into our waterways, except in very extreme, once in a blue moon, storm conditions. Every dump is an offence, punishable by five years in prison. But the water police force – the Environment Agency – has never prosecuted any water company executive or owner or …

Wolves, Sunderland condemn racist abuse directed at players

Feb 23 : Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland said they were appalled by the racial abuse directed at their players on social media on Sunday following defeats in the Premier League. Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle both received online abuse, with the incidents coming less than 24 hours after Wesley Fofana and Hannibal Mejbri were racially abused following Chelsea’s draw with Burnley. Wolves said they were disgusted by the multiple instances of abuse received by Arokodare following their 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace.   “We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity,” the club said in a statement. Sunderland, who lost 3-1 to Fulham, said they were working with the authorities to identify those responsible for the messages targeting Mundle. “The abhorrent behaviour displayed by multiple individuals is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Club under any circumstances,” Sunderland wrote on their website. Bass directed watering down of Palisades fire after-action report, sources say

Bass directed watering down of Palisades fire after-action report, sources say

For nearly two months, Mayor Karen Bass has repeatedly denied that she was involved in altering an after-action report on the Palisades fire to downplay failures by the city and the Los Angeles Fire Department in combating the catastrophic blaze. But two sources with knowledge of Bass’ office said that after receiving an early draft, the mayor told then-interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva that the report could expose the city to legal liabilities for those failures. Bass wanted key findings about the LAFD’s actions removed or softened before the report was made public, the sources said — and that is what happened. The changes to the report, which was released on Oct. 8, came to light through a Times investigation published in December. The sources told The Times that two people close to Bass informed them of the mayor’s behind-the-scenes role in watering down the report. One source spoke to both of the people; the other spoke to one of them. The sources requested anonymity to speak frankly about the mayor’s private conversations with Villanueva …

Prosecution argues embezzlement was ‘directed by the party head’

Marine Le Pen, during her appeal trial for embezzlement over suspected fake jobs at the European Parliament, at a Paris appeals court, on February 3, 2026. SERGIO AQUINDO FOR LE MONDE The prosecution’s closing argument pulled no punches, but the sentences requested on Tuesday, February 3, at Marine Le Pen’s appeal trial for embezzlement over suspected fake jobs at the European Parliament, were a little lighter than those handed down by the court after the initial trial, on March 31, 2025. The two prosecutors making the case refrained from requesting that the court’s sentences be immediately enforced even if appealed, except in special cases. Additionally, all of the requested prison sentences could be served under house arrest, with an electronic monitoring tag. For Le Pen, the prosecution requested a four-year prison sentence, with three suspended (compared with just two years suspended, in the initial ruling), a €100,000 fine, and a five-year ban on running for public office. The appeals court, which is expected to deliver its decision “before the summer,” is under no obligation to follow …

PRESS REVIEW – Monday, February 2: We take a look at the oddest stories following the release of the latest batch of Epstein files. Moving to Serbia, the Chinese workforce is accused of harming nature and the local collective memory. Next: Japan’s lack of trash cans continues to surprise tourists. Finally, we take a look at the Grammys fashion. Papers are discussing the latest release of more Epstein files. British tabloid The Daily Mail quotes “intelligence sources” that say that Jeffrey Epstein was running “the world’s largest honey trap operation” on behalf of the KGB. According to these anonymous sources, Epstein was working on behalf of Moscow and possibly Israel. Sources also say that Epstein was introduced to the world of espionage by his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell’s father Robert Maxwell, who was an alleged spy for Mossad and Russia. Viral Baffler Essay Writer Directed Naomi Scott’s New Music Video

Viral Baffler Essay Writer Directed Naomi Scott’s New Music Video

File this one under “not on my 2026 bingo card”: Andrew Norman Wilson, the video artist who penned a viral essay in 2024 for The Baffler, is the director behind British actress and singer Naomi Scott’s new music video for the song “Losing You.” Scott is best known for portraying Princess Jasmine in Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin—yes, the one where Will Smith played the Genie—but she has also appeared in Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal (2022) and Smile 2 (2024). She’s a singer-songwriter in her own right, having released EPs in 2014 and 2016. In March, Scott is set to release her first full-length album, F.I.G., following four singles released last year. Related Articles The latest of those singles, “Losing You,” arrived last week alongside a music video directed, produced, written, and edited by Norman Wilson. The result is disjointed, claustrophobic, and strange, with an emphasis on close-ups, mirrors, and an inexplicable roast chicken tattooed with a broken heart. As Norman Wilson recounted in his Baffler essay, he is a video artist who has achieved …

Grubhub Super Bowl Ad is Directed by Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos

Grubhub Super Bowl Ad is Directed by Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos

Over the course of his career, director Yorgos Lanthimos has crafted a distinct style of absurdist, surrealist and genre-defying filmmaking with projects like The Lobster, Poor Things and Bugonia. But The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the Greek filmmaker is set to make arguably his most mainstream project yet: a Super Bowl commercial for Grubhub. It will be the director’s first Super Bowl ad (Grubhub’s too), and fans of his work will immediately recognize his style. The food delivery app released a teaser spot for the campaign Monday morning, with a visual design that is distinctly his, and a cast of characters that like something straight out of one of his films. “This February, one food delivery app will finally put their mouth where their money is,” the teaser proclaims. Watch: The rest of the spot is being kept under wraps for now, but look for it to set a new tone for what to expect from Grubhub going forward. It’s worth noting that while Lanthimos is now best known for his incredibly distinctive style …
