UN experts slam attacks on Gaza shelters, forced displacement in West Bank | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Panel details incidents of violence by Israeli forces and settlers against displaced Palestinians in Gaza and occupied West Bank. Published On 13 Apr 202613 Apr 2026 United Nations experts have reiterated calls for an end to Israeli attacks on displaced Palestinians in Gaza as well as forced displacement measures in the occupied West Bank. In a statement issued on Monday by the UN Human Rights Council (OHCHR), the experts detailed several incidents in March in which Israeli air strikes set tents of displaced Palestinians in Gaza on fire, killing many. “This cycle of displacement, terror, and targeted attacks serves an ultimate purpose: to make life unbearable for Palestinians and permanently force them from their land,” the panel said. Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory, was one of the experts [Gregorio Borgia/AP] “The vast majority of Gaza’s population has already been displaced multiple times which amounts to forcible transfer,” the panel said, adding that “targeting areas known to shelter displaced civilians is a grave breach of international humanitarian law.” The experts noted …

War and displacement mar the run-up to Eid al-Fitr holiday for many in Lebanon

War and displacement mar the run-up to Eid al-Fitr holiday for many in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) — Back home, Lilian Jamaan would have been shopping for clothes for her daughter and buying meat and sweets in preparation for the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. But now, “there’s no joy for Eid or for Ramadan or for anything,” she said by phone, speaking from a school-turned-shelter in the Lebanese city of Sidon. As Muslims worldwide prepare for the typically joyous holiday, Lebanon has crossed a grim milestone. The renewal of the war between Israel and the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group has displaced more than 1 million people in Lebanon. Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,000 people, Lebanese health officials say. Earlier this month, the Iran-backed Hezbollah entered the wider Iran war by firing rockets at Israel. That prompted heavy Israeli bombardment of southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, driving many from their homes. Longing to return home Basma Alloush, a spokesperson for the International Rescue Committee, said many of the children she spoke with have the same wish …

UN rights report condemns displacement of Palestinians in West Bank

UN rights report condemns displacement of Palestinians in West Bank

GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. human rights office Tuesday expressed concerns about possible “ethnic cleansing,” denouncing an acceleration of Israeli settlements and displacements of thousands of Palestinians in large parts of the occupied West Bank that has grown “more relentless” in recent months. A new report from the office of Volker Türk, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, covers a yearlong period through the end of October and warns of expanded settlements in large parts of the West Bank and the forced displacement of more than 36,000 Palestinians. Since then, “the pace of the concerted efforts by the Israeli government to seize as much Palestinian land as possible — with as few Palestinians in it as possible — is only becoming more relentless,” Ajith Sunghay, the head of the rights office in occupied Palestinian areas, told a U.N. briefing in Geneva. The Israeli diplomatic mission in Geneva responded by saying that as far as Israel was concerned, the U.N. rights office “has lost all credibility.” It alluded to longtime allegations — backed often by …

Syrian, Somali Directors on Displacement Film Fund Shorts: Rotterdam

Last year, Cate Blanchett and the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)’s Hubert Bals Fund unveiled the Displacement Film Fund, a scheme set up to provide five displaced directors with grants for short films that are worth €100,000 ($120,000) each. And on Friday evening, IFFR presented the world premieres of the first five shorts, made by directors from Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Ukraine, in the Dutch port city on Friday. The grant recipients were Iranian auteur Mohammad Rasoulof (The Seed of the Sacred Fig), Maryna Er Gorbach, the Ukrainian director of Klondike, Somali-Austrian filmmaker Mo Harawe (The Village Next to Paradise), Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat, who fled to Germany and will next month open the Berlin Film Festival, and Syria’s Hasan Kattan (Last Men in Aleppo). In a conversation with THR and during a Rotterdam press conference, Kattan and Harawe discussed their inspirations and hopes for their respective films. Kattan’s 40-minute-long Allies in Exile, from production company Grain Media that is also handling sales, stars himself and his best friend Fadi Al Halabi. “For 14 years, Syrian filmmakers Hasan Kattan and Fadi Al-Halabi have journeyed together …

Given the fast-changing and often challenging independent film space, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and its IFFR Pro arm are constantly looking to evolve to meet the needs of creatives. The co-production market Cinemart has lined up a selection of 21 feature projects for its 43rd edition, running Feb. 1-4, and 10 projects for its Darkroom works-in-progress platform. In addition, immersive media projects at Rotterdam will, for the first time, be presented under the banner Lightroom, which will bring together all XR, VR and interactive projects. In another innovation, six of the CineMart titles have been selected for the inaugural CineMart x HBF strand, a curated lineup of projects previously awarded development support by IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund (HBF). Plus, this year’s edition will feature a pilot of “Safe Harbour,” a new market initiative targeting stateless and at-risk filmmakers that is designed “to uplift projects in development from emerging filmmakers who have experienced displacement or forced migration and who face limited access to professional networks, funding pathways and development opportunities.“   The 55th edition of IFFR is taking place Jan. 29-Feb. 8. “Balancing breakthrough talent and …

Displacement camps swell with people fleeing Sudan’s war-ravaged el-Fasher | Sudan war News

Satellites show one camp spanning 500,000 square metres near the city of al-Dabba, as tens of thousands seek refuge. Several displacement camps have emerged and are quickly filling with people who fled Sudan’s devastated and largely emptied city of el-Fasher, which the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized in an atrocity-ridden campaign in October. One camp has been established in the small town of Qarni, northwest of el-Fasher, according to satellite images reviewed by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency. Between December 14 and December 29, the camp expanded by 13,000 square metres (140,000sq ft), bringing its total area to about 199,000 square metres (15,550sq yard), according to the satellite data.
