Kimmel Says Trump Feud Is Distraction ‘From Trump-Epstein Files’

Jimmy Kimmel fired back at Trump’s Thursday comments encouraging ABC to fire the late night host “soon” during the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! During the monologue for Thursday night’s episode, a screenshot of the president’s Truth Social post was shown, which reads, “When is ABC Fake News Network firing seriously unfunny Jimmy Kimmel, who incompetently presides over one of the Lowest Rated shows on Television? People are angry. It better be soon!!!” “If incompetently presiding over not just one of, but the lowest rating in history is the reason I should be fired, we should both be out of a job,” he said, as a photo of a headline stating Trump‘s approval ratings had slipped came on screen, continuing, “Because you’re not doing too good either.” Kimmel also later argued that Trump’s outrage towards him was to serve as a distraction for more pressing political topics. “And of course, all of this is is meant to distract us from the prices he didn’t lower on day one, and from the Trump-Epstein files that …

Politics Home | Labour MP Says “Harmful” Jury Trial Reforms Are A “Distraction” As Rebellion Grows

3 min read1 hr The plan to reduce the use of jury trials is a “distraction” from the real reasons for the court backlog, a Labour MP has said, as the government braces for the prospect of a major backbench rebellion over the reforms. Writing in The House on Friday, Labour MP Cat Eccles said that the proposal is “not only misguided but harmful”, and that the focus should be on addressing “chronic underinvestment, poor coordination, and systemic inefficiencies” in the justice system. The MP for Stourbridge said she had recently visited Birmingham Crown Court, the second-largest court in the country, where one barrister told her: “You won’t find a single person in this building who thinks juries are an issue.”  Justice Secretary David Lammy has said that the reforms are a bold but necessary way to help tackle the national court backlog in England and Wales. Under the changes, announced by the Labour government in December, juries would no longer be used for crimes with sentences of less than three years. More extreme offences, such as rape and murder, will still be …

Disney’s Live-Action Moana Trailer: Dwayne Johnson’s Wig Is A Distraction

Disney’s Live-Action Moana Trailer: Dwayne Johnson’s Wig Is A Distraction

Following the mixed success of recent offerings Snow White, Lilo & Stitch and the Lion King prequel Mufasa, Moana is the latest animated Disney movie to be getting a live-action remake. Less than a decade on from the release of the original animated movie, a new live-action version of Moana is hitting cinemas this summer – with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising the role of Maui from the original films for this latest take on the hit franchise. On Monday evening, Disney shared a first-look trailer of the studio’s new spin on Moana, depicting the former WWE performer in character as Maui for the first time, having lent his voice to the demi-god in the original animated musical. And while the reaction to the clip has been pretty mixed, one thing people are more or less unanimous on is the absolute jump-scare presented by Johnson’s hairpiece. Yes, Johnson’s transformation into Maui includes a hefty body suit and a long flowing wig, the latter of which it’s fair to say that people aren’t exactly convinced by… …

The Europa League has become Forest’s unwanted distraction after Midtjylland take control

The Europa League has become Forest’s unwanted distraction after Midtjylland take control

The Europa and Conference Leagues have reached the last-16 stage and we will be focused on two English clubs in action tonight. At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest host Midtjylland. When these teams met on this ground during the league phase, Midtjylland won 3-2 over Ange Postecoglou’s Forest in early October. Fast forward a couple of managers later and Forest head into this last-16 tie with Vitor Pereira at the helm. Forest are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference but Pereira is not writing off Europe to solely focus on Premier League survival. “For now, we try to be competitive in both, in the Europe League and try to get points and results in our league,” Pereira said. “I need to try to balance, but to be competitive in the next game and afterwards against Fulham. It is important for the players to be ready to help the team, we need to be ready to challenge and perform. We have quality in the squad, they are working hard, with good energy, trying …

CEO of Mistral AI says warnings about extreme risks of artificial intelligence are often ‘distraction tactics’

Arthur Mensch, in the offices of Mistral AI, Paris, February 20, 2024. CHA GONZALEZ FOR LE MONDE What is the view of Frenchman Arthur Mensch, the co-founder of Mistral AI, on the warnings about the extreme risks of artificial intelligence that have been issued by leaders of major American tech firms such as Sam Altman and Dario Amodei? At the AI summit in India, held from February 16 to February 20, OpenAI CEO Altman raised the idea of creating a kind of “[International Atomic Energy Agency] for international coordination of AI,” in response to the emergence of “true superintelligence,” which he said could appear within “a couple of years.” Meanwhile, Anthropic founder Amodei published a lengthy essay at the end of January, “The Adolescence of Technology,” in which he outlined the risks of advanced AI systems or their use to create biological weapons. “These are mostly distraction tactics,” responded Mensch, who was interviewed on Friday, February 20, by Le Monde and by the radio station France Inter at the New Delhi AI summit. “In reality, …

King’s response to heckler will frustrate critics – but he doesn’t want Andrew to be a distraction | UK News

King’s response to heckler will frustrate critics – but he doesn’t want Andrew to be a distraction | UK News

In a crowd of hundreds, two voices on the royal visit to Essex would inevitably end up grabbing some of the attention. A man heckling about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in an apparent reference to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, and a reporter asking a question, neither getting any kind of response from the King. The monarch was dodging the questions and the wet weather in Dedham. He’s been in this position many times over the years, scandals threatening to overshadow his engagements. His approach – and I’ve seen it on many occasions – is don’t answer and don’t give the story further oxygen. A man in the crowd, who was wearing a grey hat and holding a blue umbrella, shouted as the King was near him: “Charles, Charles, have you pressurised the police to start investigating Andrew?” Shortly afterwards a news reporter in the crowd – who was beside a cameraman – apparently tried to ask Charles a question about his brother. The shouts are a story but his response, should he give one, would be much …

Woman has £8,000 suitcase and handbag stolen in ‘paint’ distraction theft at central London station

Woman has £8,000 suitcase and handbag stolen in ‘paint’ distraction theft at central London station

A woman had her expensive personal items stolen off her at a busy central London station after a thief told her she had paint on her coat. Using distraction techniques to steal the items, a man approached a woman at St Pancras Station on December 27 at around 9.45am. He told her she had paint on her jacket and helped her to clean it off. However, a second man swooped in and stole her suitcase and handbag while she was distracted. The items cost more than £8,000. Police officers want to speak to these people in connection with an investigation (British Transport Police) The station is known to be a hotspot for bag thefts. Last year a thief swiped a suitcase containing £250,000 worth of jewellery and designer bags belonging to Jenson Button’s wife Brittny . Neighbouring Tube station King’s Cross St Pancras had the most recorded crimes on the Tube network in figures released last year. Officers believe the men in these CCTV images may have information that could help with their investigation in …

Trump Needs a New Target for Distraction. Bad Bunny, Iran, and Gavin Newsom Are Prime Candidates

Trump Needs a New Target for Distraction. Bad Bunny, Iran, and Gavin Newsom Are Prime Candidates

But the Trump-Newsom sparring is also a tired rerun, and could go the way “Sleepy Joe Biden” has grown equally stale. “I did a focus group with MAGA types recently,” a veteran political strategist tells me. “And even they said, ‘Give it up already—the guy isn’t president anymore.’” Recently sworn-in New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani once seemed positioned to be the perfect foil for the president: Even as they melted down on X, Republicans were thrilled to see the Muslim democratic socialist win, believing they could tar him as a loony left-winger. But Trump tossed gushed over Mamdani during the mayor-elect’s visit to the White House in late November. “The party was gearing up to make Mamdani the Democratic poster boy,” says Mike Madrid, a Republican strategist turned Trump critic, “and then Trump has that meeting where it looks like he and Mamdani are going to get engaged.” Trump recently did a mocking “impression” of a transgender weightlifter during a speech to House Republicans, and in an Iowa speech this week he claimed immigrants …

Touchscreens, attention, and the dangers of multitasking while driving

Touchscreens, attention, and the dangers of multitasking while driving

Car dashboards once relied on buttons and knobs you could adjust by feel. Today, large touchscreens dominate vehicle interiors, making navigation and media easier to access but harder to use without looking away from the road. New research from the University of Washington and the Toyota Research Institute examines how this shift affects drivers when attention is already stretched thin. The study was led by researchers at the University of Washington, including James Fogarty of the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering and Jacob O. Wobbrock of the Information School, working with Toyota Research Institute. “We all know it’s dangerous to use your phone while driving,” Fogarty said. “But what about the car’s touch screen? We wanted to understand that interaction so we can design interfaces specifically for drivers.” Conceptual diagram of the conducted study. It displays the three main methodologies used in this research. From leftto right: pupil diameter, electrodermal activity (EDA), and the NASA-TLX questionnaire are shown as measures of cognitive load. Lateral deviation and throttle control variability are presented …
