Vance Doubts the Pentagon’s Depiction of the Iran War

In closed-door meetings, J. D. Vance has repeatedly questioned the Defense Department’s depiction of the war in Iran and whether the Pentagon has understated what appears to be the drastic depletion of U.S. missile stockpiles. Two senior administration officials told us that the vice president has queried the accuracy of the information the Pentagon has provided about the war. He has also expressed his concerns about the availability of certain missile systems in discussions with President Trump, several people familiar with the situation told us. The consequences of a dramatic drawdown in munitions reserves are potentially dire: U.S. forces would need to draw from these same stockpiles to defend Taiwan against China, South Korea against North Korea, and Europe against Russia. Both Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, and General Dan Caine, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have publicly said that U.S. weapons stockpiles are robust, and portrayed the damage to Iranian forces after eight weeks of fighting as drastic. Vance’s advisers, who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity, told us …

After a shooting incident at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, President Trump – who was rushed out of the room by the secret service after gunshots rang out – was asked at a press conference if he thought his war in Iran could be a motive. “I don’t think so, but you never know,” the president replied, adding that more information about the motives of the shooter – who is in custody – would be released when available. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister travelled to Islamabad Sunday — just a day after leaving — but has not confirmed whether he will meet with U.S. officials for potential peace …

Asian stocks mixed as investors weigh Mideast ceasefire doubts, fallout worries

Markets digested the latest developments, weighing the long-term implications of already lost crude supply and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz on emerging, energy-importing countries in Asia. “The conflict appears to have moved into a prolonged standoff rather than towards a swift or durable resolution,” MUFG analysts wrote in a note. “For markets, this environment implies continued disruption to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.” Asian currencies also came under pressure: the Indonesian rupiah weakened to 17,185 a dollar, within striking distance of its all-time low of 17,193 a piece.  The rupiah has been under sustained pressure since the Middle East war broke out in late February, losing over 2 per cent to become one of the worst-hit regional currencies. All eyes are on Bank Indonesia’s monetary policy meeting later in the day, where the central bank is expected to keep rates unchanged. “BI is not expected to face immediate pressure to tighten policy, instead prioritising financial market stability in the near term,” said Radhika Rao, senior economist at DBS Bank. “Potential …

Marjorie Taylor Greene Amplifies Viral Doubts About Butler Assassination Attempt

Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has drawn attention to a detailed personal account from a longtime Trump supporter who now questions key elements of the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on then-candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In an April 12 post on X, Trisha Hope, a self-described J6 activist and 2024 Republican National Convention delegate from Texas, details how she shifted from staunch MAGA supporter to skeptic –  writing “I learned of the attempt on Trump’s life at the Butler rally.  I was in the middle of having dinner at a restaurant in Little Rock, AR.” Then, at the convention, she thought it was strange that Trump opened his speech by saying he would recount the incident “exactly” once because “it’s actually too painful to tell,” which she found out of character for someone who makes everything about himself. Hope also thought that the ‘ICONIC’ photograph of Trump rising with fist raised, shouting “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT” was weird and “perfectly timed” with a flag lowering and Secret Service agents positioned …

Stocks fall, oil prices rise amid doubts over U.S.-Iran talks

U.S. stocks and bonds sold off Thursday and oil continued its weekslong upward trajectory, as optimism faded about possible peace talks or a U.S.-Iran ceasefire. The price of U.S. crude oil rose near $95 per barrel, up more than 4%. International Brent crude rose 5%, to more than $109 per barrel. Since the war started, the cost of U.S. crude oil is up more than 40%. Since the start of the year, it has risen more than 60%. Asia shares wary, oil choppy on Hormuz doubts

SYDNEY, March 16 : Asian markets were in a wary mood on Monday as hostilities in the Gulf kept oil prices elevated, complicating an inflation outlook that should keep most central banks on pause at policy meetings this week, barring one possible hike. In a possible hint of hope, the Wall Street Journal reported the Trump administration plans to announce as early as this week that multiple countries have agreed to form a coalition to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump told the Financial Times it would be very bad for the future of NATO if the allies did not help. European Union foreign ministers will discuss on Monday bolstering a small naval mission in the Middle East, though any operation in the Strait would be fraught with risk. Oil markets were cautious as Brent rose 0.8 per cent to $104.01 a barrel, while U.S. crude fell 0.2 per cent to $98.48. Central banks in the U.S., UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, Switzerland and Sweden hold their first full meetings since …

Inter look to rebound but face fresh doubts before Atalanta match

Inter look to rebound but face fresh doubts before Atalanta match

March 12 : The Serie A title race enters a decisive phase this weekend as leaders Inter Milan host Atalanta on Saturday, seeking to steady their campaign after a derby defeat with injuries mounting ahead of the final run-in. Cristian Chivu’s Inter remain seven points clear at the top despite a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina, but the loss ended a strong run as the season enters its final stretch. With 10 matches remaining, Inter could be without key forward duo Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, who have been sidelined by injury and illness respectively, while dynamic midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu remains a doubt with a muscle problem. Inter were also knocked out of the Champions League by Norway’s Bodo/Glimt, losing 5-2 on aggregate in the playoffs. Chivu insists his team are not losing steam. “With 30 points still up for grabs, nothing would have changed even if we had won,” he said after the loss to Milan. “We must unlock our full potential and remain competitive until the very end.” …

Analysis:Crypto bill hits new impasse, raising doubts over its future

Analysis:Crypto bill hits new impasse, raising doubts over its future

March 5 : Talks on landmark crypto legislation have hit a new impasse after banks said they could not back a compromise pushed by the White House, a development that cast doubt on whether the bill will pass this year and sparked criticism from President Donald Trump who accused lenders of trying to undermine it.  Trump, who courted crypto cash on the campaign trail and whose family has profited from its own token, has prioritized crypto reform during his second administration. On Tuesday evening, he took to his Truth Social platform to call out the banking industry. “We are not going to allow them to undermine our powerful Crypto Agenda,” he posted. Crypto companies have been operating in a regulatory gray area which executives say has stymied their businesses. The Clarity Act bill aims to create clear regulations that should help promote cryptocurrency adoption, say its supporters.  The bill stalled in January because banks opposed a provision allowing stablecoin issuers and crypto firms to offer yield-bearing products and other rewards that could lure away bank …
