Dow confirms correction as traders worry about war

March 27 : The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7 per cent on Friday as investors worried about the global economic impact of the war in Iran, leaving the blue-chip index down 10 per cent from its record high close on February 10 and confirming it has been in a correction since then.  In a broad Wall Street selloff fueled by uncertainty about the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran, the Dow in recent days has suffered its worst decline since April 2025, when U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” global tariff announcement sent global markets into a tailspin. On Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq confirmed it has been in a correction since its record high close on October 29. The S&P 500 is down about 9 per cent from its record high close on January 27. While investment funds are generally not benchmarked to the Dow, the price-weighted index of 30 companies is well known among Main Street investors and its steep decline reflects a broad deterioration of investor sentiment. With the selloff driven by fears the Middle East conflict will cripple the global …

Is the Pentagon allowed to surveil Americans with AI?

Is the Pentagon allowed to surveil Americans with AI?

That’s because until the last several decades, people weren’t generating massive clouds of data that opened up new possibilities for surveillance. The Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable search and seizure, was written when collecting information meant entering people’s homes.  Subsequent laws, like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 or the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, were passed when surveillance involved wiretapping phone calls and intercepting emails. The bulk of laws governing surveillance were on the books before the internet took off. We weren’t generating vast trails of online data, and the government didn’t have sophisticated tools to analyze the data.  Now we do, and AI supercharges what kind of surveillance can be carried out. “What AI can do is it can take a lot of information, none of which is by itself sensitive, and therefore none of which by itself is regulated, and it can give the government a lot of powers that the government didn’t have before,” says Rozenshtein.  AI can aggregate individual pieces of information to spot patterns, draw inferences, …

Tech workers urge DOD, Congress to withdraw Anthropic label as a supply chain risk

Tech workers urge DOD, Congress to withdraw Anthropic label as a supply chain risk

Hundreds of tech workers have signed an open letter urging the Department of Defense to withdraw its designation of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.” The letter also calls on Congress to step in and “examine whether the use of these extraordinary authorities against an American technology company is appropriate.” The letter includes signatories from major technology and venture capital firms including OpenAI, Slack, IBM, Cursor, Salesforce Ventures, and more. It follows a dispute between the DOD and Anthropic after the AI lab last week refused to give the military unrestricted access to its AI systems.  Anthropic’s two red lines in its negotiations with the Pentagon were that it didn’t want its technology to be used for mass surveillance on Americans or to power autonomous weapons that made targeting and firing decisions without a human in the loop. The DOD said it had no plans to do either of those things, but that it didn’t believe it should be limited by the rules of a vendor.  In response to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s refusal to …

Karen Bass Says Casey Wasserman Should ‘Step Dow’ From LA28

Karen Bass Says Casey Wasserman Should ‘Step Dow’ From LA28

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is calling on Casey Wasserman to step down as chairperson of LA28 after some emails of his surfaced in the Department of Justice’s Jeffrey Epstein document release. During an interview on CNN Monday, the mayor said, “I cannot fire him, but I have an opinion. And my opinion is that he should step down. That’s not the opinion of the board.” Last week, Wasserman was publicly backed by the Los Angeles Olympics Committee board after they hired an outside law firm to review his interactions with Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker connected to Epstein. Their flirtatious correspondence took place in 2003, years before Epstein’s arrest in Palm Beach. “LA28 takes allegations of misconduct seriously, and our Board is committed to thoroughly reviewing any concerns related to the organization’s leadership,” the executive committee wrote. “Mr. Wasserman fully cooperated with the review. We found Mr. Wasserman’s relationship with Epstein and Maxwell did not go beyond what has already been publicly documented.” Bass made it clear in today’s interview that she disagreed …
