Consumers should look in their pantries to see whether they have any hot cocoa or frappe mixes part of the recall, following the San Francisco chocolate company’s announcement Monday. Salmonella bacteria are a leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria can cause serious and in some cases, fatal, infections. Healthy people infected with salmonella usually experience fever, diarrhea and vomiting, according to a company recall notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday. Young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems can die from salmonella infection. …

Key E-3 Sentry jets hit, over a dozen U.S. personnel hurt in strike by Iran : NPR

A member of police special forces stands guard on top of a vehicle in downtown Tehran, Iran, Monday. Vahid Salemi/AP hide caption toggle caption Vahid Salemi/AP NPR has confirmed more than a dozen U.S. service members were wounded and two E-3 Sentry aircraft were damaged in an Iranian strike on an air base in Saudi Arabia on Friday. President Trump has repeated the assertion that Iran wants a deal while he has also ordered thousands of U.S. troops to deploy to the Middle East and even warned the U.S. may try to seize Iran’s oil and Kharg Island — or blow it up. On Monday, Trump expanded a threat he had made if Iran refuses to open the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping passage, writing on social media the U.S. would not only destroy Iranian electric plants and oil wells but also “possibly all desalinization plants!” That would potentially raise the number of civilian infrastructure sites targeted in the region. Iran struck a desalination plant in Kuwait overnight. And three United Nations peacekeepers were killed …

Politics Home | Over A Dozen Universities Wrongly Spent £190m Of Taxpayers’ Money On Student Loans

Politics Home | Over A Dozen Universities Wrongly Spent £190m Of Taxpayers’ Money On Student Loans

4 min read6 hr Exclusive: A student loans mistake by universities has seen up to £190m of taxpayers’ money wrongly given to unaware students, PoliticsHome can reveal, leaving thousands of them facing repayment orders. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said those students had been “let down” by their higher education providers and accused universities of “incompetence” and “abuse of public money”. According to a Department for Education (DfE) letter sent this week, obtained by PoliticsHome, officials realised that providers were misclassifying weekend-only courses as in-attendance courses. Under the student loan regulations, students on weekend-only courses are not ordinarily eligible for maintenance loan support, as they are classed as distance learners. Around 22,000 students at 15 mostly franchised higher education providers across the country are affected, the DfE estimates, with incorrect payments totalling around £190m this academic year. Ministers are now reviewing student loan regulations to “strengthen protections of public money further”. The DfE declined to confirm to PoliticsHome which providers are affected. Franchising allows universities to subcontract teaching and training to other organisations, such as colleges. …

Meet 2026’s “Dirty Dozen,” the produce with the most pesticides

Meet 2026’s “Dirty Dozen,” the produce with the most pesticides

In anticipation of salad season, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released its annual list of the top fruits and vegetables that are heavily contaminated by pesticides, infamously known as the “Dirty Dozen.”  The 2026 picks are commonly consumed favorites, including strawberries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, cherries, apples, blackberries, pears and blueberries. Fruit makes up more than half of the filthy bunch, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonprofit. Meanwhile, spinach held the list’s top spot for the second year in a row, containing more pesticide residues by weight than any other type of produce. Alongside the “Dirty Dozen,” EWG named its “Clean Fifteen” choices, produce with the lowest amounts of pesticide residues. That list includes pineapples, sweet corn (fresh and frozen), avocados, papaya, onion, frozen sweet peas, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, watermelon, mangoes, bananas, carrots, mushrooms and kiwi. Compared to last year’s list, nectarines bested both peaches and cherries in pesticide contamination, increasing their ranking from seventh place to fifth. Pears dropped to tenth place after outranking apples, blackberries and blueberries in 2025. As …

Iran Has Laid About a Dozen Mines in Strait of Hormuz, Sources Say

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) – Iran has deployed about a dozen mines in the Strait of Hormuz, two sources familiar with the matter said, in a move likely to complicate the reopening of the ‌narrow waterway, an important route ‌for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas. Exports of oil and LNG through the strategic chokepoint along Iran’s coast have effectively been halted by the war launched 12 days ago by the United States and Israel, helping to drive a surge in world energy prices. Iran’s military command on Wednesday said the world should be prepared for oil to hit $200 a barrel. One source said the mines were deployed “in the last few days” and that most of their locations were known. But the source declined to say how the U.S. planned to deal with them. CNN first reported the mining of the strait on Tuesday. Iran has long threatened to retaliate against any military attack by mining the strait. About a fifth of global oil and LNG normally passes through the strait, and Tehran’s …

With AI, investor loyalty is (almost) dead: At least a dozen OpenAI VCs now also back Anthropic

With AI, investor loyalty is (almost) dead: At least a dozen OpenAI VCs now also back Anthropic

With OpenAI on the verge of finalizing a new $100 billion round, and Anthropic just closing its own monster $30 billion raise, one thing is clear: the concept of investor “loyalty” is only hanging on by a thread.  At least a dozen direct investors in OpenAI were announced as backers in Anthropic’s $30 billion raise earlier this month, including Founders Fund, Iconiq, Insight Partners, and Sequoia Capital.  Some dual investments are understandable if they come from the hedge fund or asset manager worlds, where their focus is still largely investing in public stocks (competitors or not). These include D1, Fidelity, and TPG.   One of these was a bit shocking. Affiliated funds of BlackRock joined in Anthropic’s $30 billion raise even though BlackRock’s senior managing director and board member Adebayo Ogunlesi is also on OpenAI’s board of directors.  In that world, it’s true that if various BlackRock funds get a chance to own OpenAI stock, they are likely to take it, never mind the personal association of a member of their senior leadership. (BlackRock runs every …

Russia Seized A Dozen Ukrainian Villages In February: ‘Expanding Security Zone’

The Kremlin on Sunday issued an important battlefield update with Russian army chief Valery Gerasimov having newly declared that a dozen more eastern villages were seized in February. “In two weeks of February, despite severe winter conditions, combined forces and military units of the joint task force liberated 12 settlements,” Gerasimov said while visiting Russian troops operating inside Ukraine. Getty Images Gerasimov described Moscow’s forces are advancing toward Sloviansk, the industrial city that has been center of fighting between pro-Kiev and pro-Moscow forces going all the way back to 2014. According to Gerasimov, Russian troops are now roughly 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city. Gerasimov said Russian forces are “expanding a security zone” along border areas in the northeastern Sumy and Kharkiv regions, where Moscow holds limited footholds. He added that he would confer with senior officers on “further actions in the Dnipropetrovsk direction,” signaling potential expansion of operations beyond currently claimed territories – as quoted in AFP. As also related in TASS: Russian troops liberated 12 settlements in the first half of February, bringing …
