‘Dragon Mama’ review: Part two of Sara Porkalob’s Filipina family saga

‘Dragon Mama’ review: Part two of Sara Porkalob’s Filipina family saga

In “Dragon Mama,” the second part of her Dragon Cycle, writer-performer Sara Porkalob fleshes out the story of her Filipina American family. The focus here is squarely on her mother, another survivor who inflicts her own share of damage along the way. “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” Maria herself sings these words from “The Sound of Music” at the start of the play. It’s a question that will take a long time for the character to figure out — and with good reason. It’s a miracle she made it out of her childhood. Maria is 8 years old when the play begins, living in Honolulu with her mother, also named Maria, whose harrowing early story was told in “Dragon Lady,” the first installment of the trilogy presented at the Geffen Playhouse’s Gil Cates Theatre in 2024. That piece, more of a solo musical, was able to command the bigger stage. “Dragon Mama,” which opened Thursday at the Geffen Playhouse’s Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, affords Porkalob brief opportunities to showcase her captivating singing …

Daughter Amber on Yasmin Le Bon: ‘Mum is a dragon – I don’t want her disciplining my child’

The bond between model Yasmin Le Bon and her daughter Amber was undeniable when they came into the Second Act podcast studio for our special Mother’s Day episode. They chatted about sharing clothes, travelling the world – even living together in an idyllic sounding Le Bon commune, joining middle daughter Saffron and her brood ensconced in her own home at the bottom of the family garden. “Mum is my favourite person I choose to hang out with,” said Amber, 36. Yasmin and Amber Le Bon with Second Act’s Ateh Jewel However when it came to chatting about grandparenting duties with Amber’s one-year-old son Sasha and her sister’s three children, the two had very opposite opinions. “It’s quite different with your grandchildren, than with your own children,” says Yasmin, 61, who has been married to Duran Duran front man Simon Le Bon for 40 years. “I’m very, very close to them. I see them all the time. So, you know, it’s not like a special occasion. She’s still living with me and my middle daughter is at …

Two reasons it took so long to deploy HMS Dragon – and former Navy commander says ‘neither are good’

HMS Dragon has finally left Portsmouth and is on its way to protect the UK’s airbase in Cyprus from attack. But RAF Akrotiri was hit by a drone more than a week ago – with others intercepted – so why has it taken so long for the ship to set sail? Former Royal Navy commander Tom Sharpe told Sky’s This Is Why podcast that shooting down drones is “bread and butter” for the stealthy Type 45 destroyer. Iran latest: US has destroyed 16 mine-laying boats, says Trump He said there were two key reasons the ship had only just been deployed – and “neither are good”. The first is down to a “30-year decline” in defence spending – a topic in sharp focus since the Ukraine War – which means the Navy’s cupboard is “very bare”. He singled out the period when David Cameron was prime minister. “The strategic defence review in 2010 [and] the Cameron-Osborne austerity review really expedited that decline, and for that period of Tory government no new warships were ordered,” Mr …

UK will deploy HMS Dragon in Cyprus, Sir Keir Starmer confirms | World News

Britain will deploy HMS Dragon and helicopters with anti-drone capabilities in Cyprus, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed. The prime minister said on social media he had spoken with the president of Cyprus about deploying the Type 45 destroyer, which is the only type of equipment the Royal Navy has to shoot down ballistic missiles. It confirmed an earlier report from our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes the UK was considering the deployment of a Type 45 air defence destroyer to Cyprus to help defend the RAF bases there. It is not thought HMS Dragon, currently in Portsmouth, will head off on Tuesday. But the ship, which should take five to seven days to get to the region, will be leaving shortly. The dragon reveals its thousand incarnations at Paris’s Quai Branly Museum

The dragon reveals its thousand incarnations at Paris’s Quai Branly Museum

A jade dragon-pig, from the end of the Hongshan culture (4700-2900 BCE). NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM, TAIPEI Hunting for the flaming pearl was among their favorite pursuits, nine was their lucky number and the entire universe was their home. These are just a few of the many facts visitors learned at the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques-Chirac in Paris about the dragon, as it has traversed the Chinese imagination for five millennia. Do not imagine it as evil and fire-breathing, as it is often depicted in the West. Instead, it is an embodiment of vital energy, as evidenced by the sumptuous objects on loan from Taiwan for the “Dragons” exhibition. The dragon’s many avatars take many forms, from vases to headdresses, tripod cauldrons and inkstones. It first appears emerging from the egg during the Neolithic era, in jade ornaments unearthed in the tombs of high-ranking individuals. It does not yet have its majestic appearance: more like a “dragon-pig,” it emerges with a snout and small ears on one of the very first objects depicting it, which dates …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Series Announced I loved both Niels Arden Oplev’s and David Fincher’s adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, so I can’t help but get excited about the series adaptation I first learned about through Variety. Lisbeth Salander is one of the most compelling characters I’ve encountered in psychological/crime thriller fiction, and Larsson did plan for many Millennium series books (he wrote three before his death, with more series books divided between authors David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff) so there is plenty of material to work with. But for now, we only know of an eight-episode series adaptation of the first book in the series and it’s being produced by British media company Sky, so who knows how or if we’ll be able to watch the show here in the …
