The dress was the work of Harvey’s longtime friend, the Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester, and epitomises the more dramatic stage looks – melodramatic but pared-back – that Harvey turned to for her later, darker albums. As she said of the clothes: “For me, it’s about the ability to meet the world. And it is a second skin, isn’t it? It’s protection, as well. It’s a very big part of clothing, the feeling of protection, particularly in Ann’s clothes.” Who would have thought that someone who earlier in their career took to the stage in Spice Girls co-ords and hot-pink catsuits would wind up in such serious Belgian high-fashion? The best wedding guest dresses for every budget and dress code | Women’s dresses

Few social events are as fraught with sartorial anxieties as weddings. From the strict no-white-dresses rule (fair enough) to the semantics of black tie and the even murkier casual codes, dressing for someone else’s celebration can feel even more stressful than dressing for your own. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Weddings are rarely a one-size-fits-all kind of event, with a range of dress codes depending on the venue and formality levels. Summer weddings offer breathing room: florals, bright colours and lighter fabrics that shimmer under the sunlight feel perfectly at home. Town hall ceremonies suit classic tailoring, while country weddings embrace a more rustic romance. Casual weddings allow for a little more experimentation, with statement skirts and coordinated separates fair game. The trick is balance: show respect for the occasion, but rules and regulations are often outdated. Do you need to buy a new dress? Not everyone needs – or wants – to buy a dress they’ll wear only once. Buying …

Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. It’s wedding season again! Yay (or nay, depending how you look at it). There’s nothing more stressful than navigating overly-complicated wedding dress codes. You can’t wear white (famously), some say you can’t wear black or red, and apparently green is off limits in some circles, too. Not to mention that you have to factor in whether you’re going to be among the same group of friends as previous years of weddings past. Add to that the number of separate ceremonies you have to dress for this year, and their respective weather and locations, and you have yourself a sartorial minefield. The good news is that no one cares about what you’re wearing as much …

Millennials Are Mourning After Seeing The Brunch Prom Dresses Gen Zers Are Wearing On The Once-Glamorous Night

Millennials Are Mourning After Seeing The Brunch Prom Dresses Gen Zers Are Wearing On The Once-Glamorous Night

Many millennials are mourning the prom dress styles they wore back in the day after seeing the “brunch dresses” Gen Z is opting for these days. When most adults think back on their prom nights, there’s a very specific image that comes to mind. A dimly lit room full of rented tuxedos and, of course, shimmering, floor-length gowns is what’s expected. Each generation has its own unique trends, and social media has been causing them to cycle through at an even faster speed than before. Some things, like a prom dress, feel classic, though. Is there really a need to change it up? According to Gen Z, there is. Gen Zers are wearing what disappointed millennials have dubbed ‘brunch dresses’ to prom. The idea of the prom dress being a unique, easily recognizable look has changed a lot. One millennial, Molly Walker, shared how happy she was to have gone to prom before this shift on TikTok. “Thank God ‘brunch’ prom dresses weren’t trending in 2019,” she said. According to a report from The Atlantic, …

The Best Oscar Dresses of All Time: A History of Fashion at the Academy Awards

The Best Oscar Dresses of All Time: A History of Fashion at the Academy Awards

In the nearly 100 years that the Academy Awards have been in existence, the ceremony has become synonymous not just with film but fashion. Oscar dresses dominate the conversation the night of the festivities and for days after. They are praised when they are simply gorgeous and criticized when they miss the mark. Bold choices are applauded or mocked—or mocked at the time and then applauded later. (Looking at you, Björk.) The anointing of the Oscars as a major event for clothes evolved over time as the ceremony went from being essentially a dinner party to a nationally televised event. In the early days, stars would rely on the studios to dress them, sometimes even working with the people who made their costumes on their films. Now the nominees and other attendees work with armies of stylists who connect them to high profile designers that are eager to have their work seen on as big of a stage as the Oscars red carpet. Is there a dress code for the Academy Awards? These days that’s …

Queen Letizia Shared Valentino Dresses With Her Mother-in-Law, Queen Sofia

Queen Letizia of Spain has been known to borrow an outfit from her mother-in-law, Queen Sofía. A few of those garments were designed by renowned fashion designer Valentino Garavani, who died on Monday, January 19 at age 93. It has been nearly three years to the day that Queen Letizia was seen wearing a haute couture ensemble from the Queen Mother, designed by the Italian fashion icon, while attending a reception at the Royal Place in Madrid on Monday for the diplomatic corps accredited in Spain alongside her husband King Felipe. She wore a Valentino dress featuring a long, A-line forest green skirt with a pink and white sash at the waist and a sheer, wide-sleeved organza top adorned with large, pink floral embroidery. This gown previously belonged to Felipe’s mother, Queen Sofía, who last wore the look in 1977, the year of the collection, at Gymnich Castle on a state trip to Germany with her husband, King Juan Carlos. He abdicated the throne in 2014. Queen Sofia in the same outfit as her mother-in-law, …
