The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that AA Driving School and BSM Driving School illegally omitted a mandatory £3 booking fee from their advertised upfront prices. This practice, known as drip-pricing, meant learner drivers were not shown the full cost initially. Individual refunds will vary based on the number of lesson packages purchased, averaging around £9 per customer, totalling more than £760,000. The combined refunds and penalty will amount to nearly £5 million. This marks the first financial penalty issued by the CMA for a breach of consumer law since it gained new enforcement powers. CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said: “If a fee is mandatory, the law is clear: it must be included …

I stopped letting Windows decide when to update my drivers

I stopped letting Windows decide when to update my drivers

Experts sometimes talk about fixing Windows updates. I only understood why when an automatic background update wiped out my audio configuration. A configuration that had taken a lot of fine-tuning was gone because Windows felt it knew what was better for me. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It was time to take control of how updates happen on my computer. Windows doesn’t give the best drivers Compatibility with trade-offs Afam Onyimadu / MUO Windows updates prioritize the most compatible drivers over the best-performing ones. This means there isn’t a guarantee of better performance with system components. The best updates for fast-moving hardware come quickly and keep pace with driver development. These vendor updates typically fix and improve performance and also support the latest software. However, Windows updates don’t always keep pace with development, and you may be left with an older version that has passed compatibility checks and proper certification. This is what comparing the different driver sources side by side looks like: Driver source What you get Trade-off Best for …

French drivers choke on soaring diesel prices

French drivers choke on soaring diesel prices

In France, a massive jump in the price of diesel fuel is having a particularly onerous effect on the country’s drivers. French economic policies from the 1970s and 80s turned the country into one of the most diesel-dependent nations in the Western world. But less and less of the fuel is being refined in France – leading to price spikes at the pump even more pronounced than for gasoline. Source link

European drivers choke on rising diesel prices due to Iran conflict

European drivers choke on rising diesel prices due to Iran conflict

European drivers face a record fuel inflation at the pumps because of the surge in oil prices caused by the war in Iran, with diesel now 30 percent more expensive than it was when the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. The Easter holiday weekend across Europe is expected to see a surge in demand with queues at petrol stations. Diesel has been worse hit than other fuels, and was already under pressure before the war. Experts say its cost will rise further — with a knock-on effect on inflation — as long as trade through the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked. The per-barrel price of diesel rose above $200 in Europe on Thursday, the highest since March 2022 when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shook markets. Diesel is ubiquitous in Europe. While electric cars are making inroads in new sales, diesel is still the most widely used fuel. Trucks, farm tractors, buses, building site machinery and even shipping depend on it. The oil crisis is making drivers realize they can’t afford not to drive electric

The oil crisis is making drivers realize they can’t afford not to drive electric

The national average gas price hit $4.09 per gallon this week — up 33% from a year ago — as yet another oil crisis hammers American drivers. But this time, the math on switching to electric is so overwhelmingly clear that millions of drivers are doing the calculation and reaching the same conclusion: they can’t afford not to drive electric. Electrified vehicle consideration jumped to 23.8% of all car shopper research activity in mid-March, the highest weekly level of 2026, according to Edmunds data. Online searches for EVs surged 17% in a single week as gas prices spiked. Oil crises keep happening — and they always will If the current gas price spike feels familiar, that’s because it is. American drivers have been through this exact pain cycle repeatedly, and it’s only getting worse: 2008: Oil hit $147 per barrel in July. Gas reached $4.05/gallon nationally — a record at the time. The cause: surging global demand meeting stagnant oil production, amplified by financial speculation. It took a full-blown recession to bring prices back down. …

Uber EV grant expanded nationwide, offering drivers big incentives

Uber EV grant expanded nationwide, offering drivers big incentives

Six months after transitioning one of its rideshare options to promote more electric rides and offer a grant to riders who switch to an EV, Uber Technologies is expanding the program across the US and adding additional savings. Another week, another headline regarding Uber Technologies wielding its power as the world’s most prominent rideshare network to promote and expand electrification. Bravo, Uber. March included a partnership announcement with purpose-built robotaxi developer, Zoox, followed by an investment in Rivian that could total up to $1 billion to deploy R2 robotaxis. As you may recall, back in October 2025, the rideshare network announced it was rebranding its “Uber Green” service to “Uber Electric,” stating that the name change “reflects record EV growth on our platform, making it easier for riders to choose zero-emissions rides.” Advertisement – scroll for more content To celebrate the revamped service, Uber also announced a new EV grant program called “Go Electric”, offering drivers in certain cities an incentive of up to $4,000 toward the purchase of a used EV.
