Iran-linked group claims hack of FBI drones, threatens World Cup, monitor reports

An Iran-linked hacker group claims to have breached FBI drones and has threatened to target the World Cup that kicked off this week, a monitoring group said on Friday. The SITE Intelligence Group, an organisation that monitors jihadist groups, published a statement from Handala saying they had had access “for months” to “every image and every suspect” captured by first-person view (FPV) drones used by the FBI. The hackers said the drones featured facial recognition and license plate screening deployed for counterterrorism. “Better tighten your World Cup security, we don’t like some of those teams at all. Don’t forget: FPVs are everywhere; you never know when one might end up right in your team’s bus,” Handala said in the statement quoted by SITE. The FBI is deploying drones around World Cup stadiums to protect against unauthorized aircraft. Drone flights will be banned over US stadiums hosting matches, as well as over fan events related to the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada that kicked off its largest edition on Thursday. Killer robots are here – we must finally decide whether to accept them

Killer robots are here – we must finally decide whether to accept them

Should drones be allowed to kill autonomously? Shutterstock/Thongsuk7824 For years, we have had unconfirmed reports and rumours that AI-controlled weapons have killed soldiers on the battlefield without a human in the loop. Now, we know it has happened. As we report here, the use of autonomous killers in a test exercise marks a watershed in warfare. But we shouldn’t be surprised. The technology has existed for some time and humans have never invented a weapon and then refrained from using it. That doesn’t mean we can’t reverse course. The logic for a ban on autonomous weapons is simple: deploying AI without human oversight risks weapons accidentally targeting troops on the wrong side or even civilians. What’s more, ethicists say that such weapons deprive combatants of their dignity, make war too easy to wage and muddy the waters when it comes to responsibility for lethal action. But if we are to ban these weapons, just as we have done with cluster bombs and lasers designed to blind soldiers, we should have acted before they arrived, not …

Criminal fly-tipping gangs are costing governments millions – AI and drones can help track waste dumpers

Criminal fly-tipping gangs are costing governments millions – AI and drones can help track waste dumpers

Illegal waste dumping in the UK is no longer a marginal nuisance. It is increasingly operating at an industrial scale, with serious consequences. The reported dumping of around 30,000 tonnes of waste at a protected site of special scientific interest in Leicestershire is one recent example of how severe the problem has become. Similar concerns have emerged recently at the large illegal waste site near Kidlington, Oxfordshire, where shredded mixed waste was deposited close to waterways. These are signs of a broader waste-crime economy that is damaging land, water and communities while shifting the bill onto the public. The House of Lords environment and climate change committee estimated that waste crime costs the UK economy about £1 billion a year. Part of the problem is that by the time large fly-tipping sites are discovered, it can be difficult to identify the original source. This is where digital technology and geospatial intelligence are becoming increasingly important. My ongoing research focuses on exactly this problem: mapping and characterising uncontrolled waste disposal sites worldwide, and using satellite data, …

Fully autonomous drones have killed human soldiers for the first time

Fully autonomous drones have killed human soldiers for the first time

Drones are a common sight on the battlefields of Ukraine, but they are normally controlled by human pilots Frank Herrmann/Getty Images Fully autonomous drones with no human oversight have killed soldiers on the battlefield for the first time. This is according to a senior figure in the Ukrainian defence industry, marking a watershed moment in warfare. The one-off test involved 10 AI-controlled “Terminator” drones on the front line of the Ukraine war. Russian soldiers were killed. “We tried it,” says drone-maker Alexander Kokhanovskyy, who supplied the technology and spoke to New Scientist at a press event hosted by the Ukrainian embassy. “It’s a test. We never implemented it [more widely].” The test took place two years ago and involved quadcopter drones that were programmed to fly towards the front line, cover between 3 and 5 kilometres over around 10 minutes and then engage “Terminator mode”, in which an AI model searches for and intercepts targets. “We just launch it and we know everything will be dead – everything that will be found there in this …

Trump Says He Will Press Israel to Hold Back After Iran Retaliates for Beirut Attack

By Alexander Cornwell, Parisa Hafezi and Bo Erickson BEIRUT/DUBAI/NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey, June 7 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would tell Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to strike back after Iran fired a salvo of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation for an attack on the outskirts of Beirut, news outlet Axios reported. Iran has long said any peace deal with the U.S. would depend on a ceasefire also holding in Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March in pursuit of Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters who fired rockets and drones across the border in solidarity with Tehran. But Israel ‌earlier on Sunday launched strikes in the Beirut area for ‌the first time since the U.S. announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted Ramat David air base, near Nazareth. The Israeli military said it identified missiles launched from Iran and that its defense systems had intercepted them.  Trump, who was spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and Netanyahu spoke …

Mark Schiefelbein/AP hide caption toggle caption Mark Schiefelbein/AP BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — The U.S. military said it shot down Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf Arab allies on Friday, while striking some of the Islamic Republic’s coastal surveillance radar sites in response, an exchange of fire that further frayed a shaky ceasefire with Tehran. The exchange of strikes comes as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on Iran to make a deal to end the conflict. U.S. Central Command said on social media Friday night that Iran fired seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, with U.S. forces intercepting six of the missiles and a seventh failing to reach its target. The military said there were no reports of harm to U.S. personnel. The ballistic missiles were fired after the U.S. earlier in the day shot down four Iranian drones that were …

Cell carriers are using AI, drones and ‘cows’ to respond to hurricanes : NPR

Residents make phone calls in their neighborhood after heavy rains from hurricane Helene caused record flooding and damage on September 28, 2024 in Asheville, North Carolina. Melissa Sue Gerrits/Getty Images North America hide caption toggle caption Melissa Sue Gerrits/Getty Images North America Anthony Leone and his wife, Corinne Saunders, have already started watching the weather. In a few weeks, they’ll be filling coolers and plugging in generators. He has lived in North Carolina’s Outer Banks for more than 20 years. So he’s familiar with this routine that precedes the inevitable — hurricane season. As for their cell phones? “We just plan ahead to not use [them].” Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the National Weather Service said in May it’s predicting below-normal activity in the Atlantic region for the first time since 2015. But the chance for at least one very powerful storm remains. Even though there may be slightly less hurricane activity this year, high winds and rain can still interrupt the power supply stationary cell towers rely on. As a result, …

Ukrainian drones hit Saint Petersburg as ‘Russian Davos’ opens in the city

Ukrainian long-range drones hit an oil terminal in the Russian city of St Petersburg on June 3, setting the facility ablaze. It came hours before Vladimir Putin’s showcase economic forum got under way in the city, apparently an attempt to embarrass the Kremlin chief. Moscow said it would keep striking Ukraine systematically in response to such attacks. Keywords for this article Source link
