And somebody has to be play the part of the unheralded “little guy.” At the Final Four next weekend, that role belongs, improbably, to Illinois. In a sign of the times, the Illinii — a Big Ten team with more wins in the conference over the last seven seasons than any other program — will pass for something resembling Cinderella when college basketball’s biggest party kicks off in Indianapolis on Saturday. The first challenge for coach Brad Underwood’s team will be stopping a hard-charging UConn juggernaut that came from 19 points down and got a game-winner from the logo with 0.4 seconds left from an Indy native — Braylon Mullins — to make its third …

Duke and Duchess of Westminster resume duties following arrival of first baby

Duke and Duchess of Westminster resume duties following arrival of first baby

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster have been away from the public eye since they welcomed their daughter, Cosima, back in July. However, on Friday, the couple made their return to their duties. The couple headed out to the Chester FC Community Trust, where they heard how the King George V Sports Hub was helping grassroots football and communities in Chester. The work of the organisation is supported by the Duke’s Westminster Foundation, which has donated £520,000 towards its scheme. The sports hub was opened by the Duke back in 2022, and the facility has now been transformed into one that supports health and wellbeing, sport, education and community development. During the visit, the Duke and Duchess heard about projects at the site, including the Blacon Youth Hub, a nightclub for youths run on Fridays. Another initiative was the Chester FC Football Education course, which supports 16-18-year-olds into a career within the sports industry. No. 1 Duke survives NCAA Tournament first-round scare against No. 16 Siena

The No. 1 Duke Blue Devils, the betting favorite to win the men’s NCAA Tournament, barely escaped the round of 64 with a 71-65 win over the No. 16 Siena Saints on Thursday. Follow along for live updates of Thursday’s games The Blue Devils trailed from the 15:31 mark of the first half until the 4:25 mark of the second, when an Isaiah Evans layup finally gave Duke the lead again. The Blue Devils finished the game on a 15-4 run to extinguish any hopes of a shocking upset. No. 16 seeds have upset No. 1 seeds only twice before in the men’s tourney, in 2018 and 2023. Gavin Doty was remarkable in a losing effort for the Saints, scoring 21 points. He was aided by big man Francis Folefac, who added 18. But they both cooled off in the second half, as did the rest of the team. After shooting 17-for-31 from the field in the first half, Siena made only eight of its 34 field goal attempts in the second. At one point, …

Duke, Arizona, Michigan, Florida Get Top Seeding for March Madness. Miami (Ohio) Gets a Shot

Duke, Arizona, Michigan, Florida Get Top Seeding for March Madness. Miami (Ohio) Gets a Shot

The team that went undefeated in the regular season, racked up more victories than anyone but Duke and Arizona — and fewer losses than any team at all — is anything but your run-of-the-mill basketball behemoth. In fact, Miami (Ohio), despite that 31-1 record and maybe because of a little chip that’s been placed on its shoulder, is one of those plucky underdogs that makes the NCAA Tournament what it is. While Duke (32-2) took the overall top seed on Selection Sunday, with Arizona (32-2), Michigan (31-3) and defending champion Florida (26-7) also on the top line, the RedHawks barely scratched their way into the bracket. They are an 11 seed and have to play a First Four game against SMU on Wednesday. But after all the debate and hand-wringing that came with their single loss last week, which immediately turned them from sure thing into bubble team, they now enjoy the same privilege as the other 67 teams in the field. They will have a chance to win and advance, with no selection committee, …

No. 1 Duke Loses Caleb Foster to Broken Foot, Won’t Have Big Man Patrick Ngongba II for ACC Tourney

No. 1 Duke Loses Caleb Foster to Broken Foot, Won’t Have Big Man Patrick Ngongba II for ACC Tourney

Top-ranked Duke has lost starting point guard Caleb Foster to a broken right foot that will keep him out for an extended period, while starting big man Patrick Ngongba II won’t play in this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament while dealing with his own foot issue. “In his mind and our mind, we’ll do everything we possibly can with our mindset to continue to advance where we can give him a shot to come back when it’s all said and done,” Scheyer said. Foster had started 30 of 31 games this year, averaging 8.5 points and 2.8 assists for the Blue Devils (29-2). He was hurt with about five minutes left before the break when he stumbled backwards and planted his right foot awkwardly, then immediately turned to the bench. Foster grabbed at his right foot while being evaluated, then left the bench area. He didn’t return until well into the second half with his foot in a boot. It’s the second time in Foster’s three seasons that he has dealt with a right-foot injury …

Caleb Wilson Watches From Sideline as No. 17 North Carolina Loses at No. 1 Duke

Caleb Wilson Watches From Sideline as No. 17 North Carolina Loses at No. 1 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Caleb Wilson was right where he wanted to be in a sense, standing alongside his North Carolina teammates on the court before a rivalry loss at No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. But the star freshman and high-end NBA prospect can only watch now. Instead, a freak injury — complete with Wilson posting a post-surgery photo on social media — has ended what is expected to be a lone college season with his high-lottery draft projection. It’s also delivered a potentially devastating blow to the Tar Heels’ postseason aspirations. “Obviously, there’s tremendous sadness for him,” coach Hubert Davis said. “It was a dream for him to play in the ACC and NCAA Tournament. And my heart is broken that he won’t be able to do that. But we finished the regular season, now it’s time to regroup and move toward the ACC Tournament.” “Unfortunately we’re kind of used to it as a team,” Trimble said. The Tar Heels had gone 5-1 without Wilson as he inched closer to a potential …

Boozer, No. 1 Duke Take Over After Halftime to Beat 17th-Ranked Rival North Carolina 76-61

Boozer, No. 1 Duke Take Over After Halftime to Beat 17th-Ranked Rival North Carolina 76-61

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Boozer had 26 points, 15 rebounds and five assists to help No. 1 Duke beat No. 17 North Carolina 76-61 on Saturday night in a rivalry rematch. Maliq Brown added 15 points as Duke led by a single possession early after halftime before taking over with 16 unanswered points in what ballooned to a 24-2 surge. The Blue Devils (29-2, 17-1) completed a second straight one-loss run through ACC regular-season play, this one coming a month after losing at North Carolina on Seth Trimble’s last-second 3-pointer. Duke has won eight straight, including a neutral-court victory over then-No. 1 Michigan and a romp against No. 13 Virginia. The loss capped a rough 24 hours for the Tar Heels (24-7, 12-6). They appeared on the verge of getting star Caleb Wilson back from a fractured left hand just in time for March Madness — and maybe this game — only for him to suffer a season-ending broken right thumb during a non-contact drill Thursday. The freshman was on the bench with his …

The Duke Lacrosse Case Exposed The Rot In Higher Education, The Media, And The Justice System

The Duke Lacrosse Case Exposed The Rot In Higher Education, The Media, And The Justice System

Authored by William L. Anderson via the Mises Institute, Twenty years ago this month, the infamous Duke Lacrosse Case exploded on the Duke University campus, with three members of the university’s lacrosse team falsely accused of raping and assaulting a black stripper. It took more than a year to exonerate those young men, but only after the false charges had ruined lives and exposed elite higher education in the US. As one who wrote nearly 100 articles on this case and who was interviewed on talk shows, along with working with some of the attorneys and families involved in the case, I saw it from the inside. I reported on prosecutors who lied and knowingly filed false charges and suborned perjury to cover their lies, police who lied at every turn of what turned out to be a sham investigation, and members of the Duke University faculty and administration who took part in framing innocent people for a crime that did not happen. And hovering over all of the wreckage was a combination of national …
