Specialized just gave its commuter e-bikes a huge power boost with the new Vado 3

Specialized just gave its commuter e-bikes a huge power boost with the new Vado 3

Specialized has unveiled its latest generation of urban electric bikes with the all-new Vado 3 and Vado 3 EVO, bringing a surprising amount of high-performance DNA from its trail-dominating electric mountain bikes into a more practical, everyday package. At first glance, the new Vado 3 lineup looks like a refinement of Specialized’s already popular commuter platform. But under the hood, it’s a much bigger leap forward. The headline upgrade is the new Specialized 3.1 motor system, which borrows heavily from the company’s latest Levo eMTB platform. That means up to 810 W of peak power and 105 Nm of torque – a significant bump over the previous generation. Specialized says that translates into quicker acceleration, including a 0–25 km/h (15.5 mph) sprint in just three seconds, helping riders keep pace with city traffic instead of lagging behind it. Every Vado 3 and Vado 3 EVO model gets the same motor and battery …

Lectric heads north – Canadians get access to the US’s best-selling e-bikes

Lectric heads north – Canadians get access to the US’s best-selling e-bikes

Lectric eBikes is officially rolling into Canada, setting the stage to shape the future of cycling north of the border. The Arizona-based brand, which has become one of the most recognizable names in the North American e-bike market, announced a new collaboration with Vélo Canada Bikes, a national nonprofit focused on improving cycling infrastructure and accessibility across Canada. The move comes as Lectric expands its presence into the Canadian market, riding a wave of growing demand for affordable electric bikes. If you’ve been following the e-bike industry over the last few years, Lectric’s rise has been hard to miss. The company says it has sold more than 650,000 e-bikes in just six years, largely by focusing on value-driven models that bring solid performance at prices far below many competitors. That formula has helped Lectric dominate the US market, and now it appears ready to test that same playbook in Canada. But rather than simply launching sales and calling it a day, Lectric is tying its expansion to advocacy efforts. Its partnership with Vélo Canada Bikes …

Electric kayaks that are e-bikes of the water are having a moment

Electric kayaks that are e-bikes of the water are having a moment

Electric propulsion has already transformed the way we ride bikes on land, and now the same idea behind e-bikes is quietly reshaping how we get around on the water. Electric kayaks are bringing a similar concept to the water, making marine excursions more accessible than ever. Old Town recently announced a slate of new kayaks that lean heavily into electric and pedal-assist propulsion, including models that blur the line between traditional paddling and fully motorized boating.  The company’s new Sportsman PDL 120 PRO and ePDL+ 120 PRO are aimed at anglers, with the latter offering a mix of manual pedaling, power-assisted pedaling, and even full-on cruise control via an onboard motor and a 36V battery system.  Meanwhile, the recreational lineup expands with models like the Malibu ePDL+ 120, which also supports multiple propulsion modes, and the Sonata 106 MK, a compact motorized kayak complete with a Minn Kota motor, throttle control, and even Bluetooth speakers for good measure.  If that all sounds familiar, it should. This is essentially the e-bike playbook, just floating. Advertisement – …

Why California cities are banning kids from riding e-bikes to school

Why California cities are banning kids from riding e-bikes to school

A Southern California school district is considering a controversial new rule that could significantly limit how students get to school. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District, which serves Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, is weighing a proposal that would ban most students from riding electric bicycles to school. Under the proposal, students would face varying degrees of e-bike bans depending on their age. From kindergarten through sixth grade, students would be completely prohibited from riding e-bikes to campus. Seventh- and eighth-graders would also be subject to the ban, though parents could sign paperwork granting permission for their children to commute by e-bike. High school students would largely remain unaffected. The discussion comes amid growing safety concerns surrounding the rapid rise of e-bike use among younger riders. According to data cited by the district, e-bike riders were found to be at fault in 44% of the 126 bicycle accidents recorded in neighboring Costa Mesa in 2025. Newport Beach has also recently adopted stricter local regulations, including fines and even possible impoundment of e-bikes for riders who violate …

Life EV officially owns Rad Power Bikes now

Life Electric Vehicles Holdings, also known as Life EV, officially owns the intellectual property, inventory, and certain operating assets of Rad Power Bikes. Life EV acquired Rad Power for $13.2 million. Rad Power Bikes, a buzzy electric bike company that raised nearly $330 million in venture capital, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December. The company had struggled for months prior to its bankruptcy filing, and had warned employees it might have to shut down without new capital. Life EV intends to keep the company intact and said it will continue retail operations under the Rad Power Bikes brand in the United States. It also plans to expand the retail footprint in select key markets. Life EV also pledged to support existing customers who might be wondering what would become of their bike warranties or even gift cards. The Florida-based Life EV has built its business by acquiring, developing, and scaling electric bicycle and micro-mobility brands. While Rad Power is perhaps its highest profile purchase, the company also holds an equity interest in LEV …

Rad Power Bikes sale completed, new owner to build e-bikes in the US

Rad Power Bikes, once the dominant force in North America’s direct-to-consumer e-bike boom, has officially found a new home. Life Electric Vehicles Holdings (Life EV) announced this week that it has completed a court-approved acquisition of Rad Power Bikes’ brand, intellectual property, inventory, and certain operating assets. The move positions Life EV as the new owner of one of the most recognizable names in the e-bike industry. The company says it plans to continue operating under the Rad Power Bikes brand in the United States while expanding retail operations in select markets. For longtime Rad riders, one immediate question will be what happens to existing customer commitments. Life EV says it intends to support Rad customers by honoring certain warranties and gift cards in accordance with the terms of the asset purchase agreement, though details are not clear at this time regarding which prior commitments will be honored. Rad Power Bikes played a major role in shaping the modern North American e-bike market in the pre-pandemic years, quickly becoming the largest e-bike company in the …

Major brand recalls 20,000 e-bikes due to separating rear wheel

Major brand recalls 20,000 e-bikes due to separating rear wheel

Nearly 20,000 electric bicycles are being recalled in the US after a defect was discovered that could cause the rear wheel to separate from the bike, posing a crash risk. The recall affects certain model year 2026 electric bikes from Trek Bicycle Corporation and its sister brand Electra Bicycle Company. Specifically, it covers Trek FX+ 1 and FX+ 1S models (in both Midstep and Stepover frames) as well as Electra Townie Go! Step Thru and Townie Go! S Step Thru e-bikes sold before October 28, 2025. According to the recall notice, the issue involves the black rear wheel bolts that connect the motor to the rear frame of the bicycle. The bolts can break when torqued, which could allow the rear wheel to separate from the bike and create a fall hazard. The affected bikes were manufactured in Taiwan by Hyena, Inc. and sold at Trek stores and authorized retailers nationwide, as well as online, between April 2025 and October 2025. Retail pricing was around $2,100. In total, about 19,890 units are included in the …
