4 times Starmer’s top team distanced themselves from the PM … just this week – POLITICO

Yvette Cooper  The U.K.’s current foreign secretary was keen to remind MPs she wasn’t running the Foreign Office when the seeds of the Mandelson saga were sown. Asked about the Doyle revelation in the House of Commons Tuesday, Cooper said: “Obviously, I was the home secretary at the time that I understand that took place, so I was not involved and do not know the circumstances.” Robbins told MPs earlier Tuesday that he was “under strict instruction” from No. 10 not to discuss the possibility of Doyle’s posting with Lammy, something Cooper said she was “extremely concerned” about. For good measure, she added Doyle would “not have been an appropriate appointment.”  Darren Jones  There are few ministers closer to Starmer than Jones, but it appears even the PM’s chief secretary has his limits. During an interview with POLITICO’s Anne McElvoy, Jones pleaded ignorance when quizzed over accusations from Robbins that there had been a culture of fear inside Downing Street around Mandelson’s appointment.  “I wasn’t in the building at the time, so I can’t speak …

Labour Cabinet Members Set To Lose Seats In Election Wipeout, Poll Suggests

Yvette Cooper, Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner and Rachel Reeves could all lose their seats. via Associated Press A host of Labour cabinet members are set to lose their seats to both Reform UK and the Greens at the next election, according to a new mega poll. The More in Common study suggests Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting and Yvette Cooper are among those who could be kicked out by voters at the next election. Labour leadership hopeful and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner would also lose her seat, as would the likes of John Healey, Ed Miliband, Hilary Benn, Lisa Nandy, Pat McFadden, Jonathan Reynolds and Darren Jones. Although Keir Starmer would be re-elected in the traditionally safe Labour seat of Holborn and St Pancras, his majority would be slashed. Reform would win a staggering 324 seats – just short of an overall Commons majority – while the Greens would see their number of MPs quadruple to 21, the poll said. However, Labour would plummet from 411 seats to just 102, with the Tories also …

Miliband facing Labour revolt on North Sea drilling

Miliband facing Labour revolt on North Sea drilling

Ed Miliband is facing a rising backbench revolt over his refusal to back North Sea drilling. A growing number of Labour MPs are for the first time publicly calling on the Energy Secretary to reconsider his net zero agenda, amid pressure to shore up domestic energy supplies in the wake of an energy crisis caused by the Iran war. It will pile pressure on the Left of the Cabinet to back “pragmatic” North Sea oil exploration, a policy already supported by the Conservatives and Reform UK. Earlier this week, Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, said she would be “very happy” to support extraction at two proposed new oil and gas fields: Rosebank and Jackdaw – breaking away from Mr Miliband and opening a rift between government ministers. Mr Miliband has been facing opposing voices from a growing number of party colleagues – ANDY RAIN/Shutterstock Sir Keir Starmer has refused to weigh in, stating repeatedly during the last Prime Minister’s Questions before recess that approval for Rosebank and Jackdaw was a quasi-judicial decision for Mr Miliband alone. …

Kemi Badenoch tears into Keir Starmer and Ed Miliband over North Sea | Politics | News

She insisted it is “not rocket science” and that the Prime Minister and Energy Secretary need to “get a grip” as Britons face soaring prices. Mrs Badenoch told LBC: “A lot of people don’t know that quite a lot of your bills aren’t coming from the wholesaler or the energy company, it’s actually the Government that’s put loads of taxes on that. “We think that those taxes need to come off. They’re being used to subsidise things that in my view don’t need subsidies. “Why don’t we just bring your bills down by drilling in the North Sea? It’s not rocket science but Labour don’t seem to even want to think about it. “It’s important for our energy security, our financial security, our national security.” She went on: “Instead they want to raise fuel duty in September. They’re telling people they’ve extended it for five months, we froze it for 14 years, in fact we cut it in 2022. “So there’s a lot that can be done. People out there are struggling. I’m very worried …

Ed Miliband blasted for ‘stupid’ and ‘completely crazy’ wartime policy | Politics | News

Ed Miliband blasted for ‘stupid’ and ‘completely crazy’ wartime policy | Politics | News

Kemi Badenoch will visit an oil rig on Monday as she launches a campaign to “get Britain drilling”. The Tory leader has branded Labour’s refusal to grant new oil and gas drilling licences as “stupid” and “completely crazy” as global markets are rocked by the conflict in Iran. The future of Britain’s remaining oil and gas reserves in the North Sea is now one of the key dividing lines in UK politics, and the Conservative leader is adamant the country should “maximise” domestic production. Mrs Badenoch said the “real reason Labour are refusing new licences is that [Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary] Ed Miliband is now running the government”. In a new advertising campaign, the Tories will claim Labour’s “ban on new oil and gas licences” has “left 2.9billion barrels in the ground and risks 200,000 jobs”. The party is also demanding an end to the energy profits levy – the so-called windfall tax – which it blames for stopping investment. Under its plans a new North Sea Authority would have a “single focus …

Labour draws up equality law revamp that ‘will impose socialism’ on Britain

Labour draws up equality law revamp that ‘will impose socialism’ on Britain

Labour is planning an overhaul of equality laws that will “impose socialism” on Britain, the Tories have claimed. Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is drawing up new statutory guidance that critics say amounts to a “war on the middle class”. Under the plans, public sector bodies will have a new “socio-economic duty” imposed on them, meaning that all decisions they make must strive to reduce inequality in society. The policy would lead to benefits claimants and deprived families being prioritised for taxpayer-funded services, with the middle classes pushed to the back of the queue, according to the Conservatives. In practice, they warn that this could lead to middle-class families being discriminated against when it comes to school places, police resources and hospital and GP appointments. Labour has been accused of launching a series of measures which have penalised the middle classes, including imposing VAT on private school fees and changing inheritance taxes for farmers and family-owned businesses. Inheritance tax changes for farmers is one of the measures that has seen Labour accused of penalising the middle …

Red Ed’s own windfarm backers turn against him over North Sea drilling | UK | News

Britain’s wind farm chief has broken ranks with Ed Miliband (Image: Getty) Ed Miliband faces an unlikely revolt after the chief executive of Britain’s wind farm industry body reportedly urged him to embrace North Sea oil and gas production, saying the Iran war had laid bare how exposed the country was to energy shocks it cannot control. Tara Singh of RenewableUK — whose members build and operate the offshore wind farms at the heart of Labour’s green energy agenda — told reporters producing more fossil fuels at home was a matter of basic national sense, not ideology, and called on the Energy Secretary to “take energy out of the culture wars.” She drew on her own experience at the heart of government to make the case, saying: “I have seen that vulnerability up close. I worked on energy in No 10 when Russia’s invasion of Crimea sent prices surging here in the UK. “I come to this debate with a simple view: Britain will be stronger, safer and less exposed if it produces more home-grown …

Energy bills put Starmer in a spending bind – POLITICO

Energy bills put Starmer in a spending bind – POLITICO

Officials simply “haven’t moved on” with targeting data since the last energy crisis, Westerman said, adding: “That is a failure of governments plural to learn the lessons from last time.”   Energy companies, pushing ministers over the issue, have grown frustrated.   “Industry has called for government to provide the data so that we can target support [to] those who need it. And there’s just been little to no progress on this,” Caitlin Berridge-Dunn, head of external affairs at energy supplier Utilita, said.  New and old ideas  One option, separate from bills, would be to maintain a longstanding, five pence per liter tax relief on gasoline and diesel, a fuel duty cut which expires in September. The oil price shock has driven up costs at the pump by more than eight pence per liter for gasoline and more than 18 pence for diesel. Another approach officials could opt for, according to Westerman, and reported in The Times Monday, is to expand the existing Warm Homes Discount, a one-off payment to reduce bills for the poorest households, as a vehicle for getting more support to people who need it most.  But that approach, he cautioned, would not catch the “squeezed middle” of households.   Source link

Miliband Distances UK From Trump’s Decision To Ease Sanctions On Russia

Miliband Distances UK From Trump’s Decision To Ease Sanctions On Russia

Ed Miliband made it clear Britain will not be following Donald Trump’s example by easing sanctions on Russia. The US president has temporarily relaxed penalties on Moscow to help its oil trade while the Iran conflict puts global supplies under pressure. The controversial move risks undermining a united western effort to punish Vladimir Putin for his brutal invasion of Ukraine. But, due to Trump’s aggression against Iran, Tehran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately a fifth of the global oil supply, by attacking any ships using the waterway. The cost of oil has skyrocketed just two weeks after the US and Israel’s strikes on Iran. Russia used to supply much of Europe with cheap oil, but the continent weaned itself off such exports in the wake of the Ukraine war. Miliband, the energy security and net zero secretary, told Sky News: “We’ve not lifted our sanctions against Russia because it is very, very important that we continue to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people. “This was an illegal invasion launched more …
