‘One of the most profound encounters of my life’: could existential therapist Emmy van Deurzen change the way you think? | Philosophy books

The existential therapist Emmy van Deurzen moved to the UK inspired by RD Laing, the Scottish anti-psychiatrist who said insanity is a “perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world”. It was 1977 and Van Deurzen, who is Dutch and had studied philosophy and psychology in France, found work with the Arbours Association in London, a therapeutic community based on Laing’s ideas, in which people in crisis, psychiatrists and therapists lived together as equals. It was a rude awakening. Arbours aimed to create space for people to “explore their madness”. “Now that was a very interesting idea,” Van Duerzen says, “but in practice it meant that people self-medicated, with alcohol and pot, and it was not a happy situation.” The residents were often very depressed or psychotic, and it was common to be woken up at night because someone was seeing things or had become suicidal. Catherine O’Hara, a gifted comedic actress and two-time Emmy winner, has died. O’Hara died Friday at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her reps at CAA confirmed. She was 71. A native of Toronto, O’Hara was part of the SCTV ensemble that also helped launch the careers of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis and others. Emmy award winner Kiefer Sutherland of 24 and Designated Survivor fame arrested after allegedly assaulting lift share driver | World News

Actor Kiefer Sutherland has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a ride-share driver in Los Angeles, police said. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the London-born Canadian actor entered a ride share vehicle at around 12.15am on Monday in Hollywood (8.15am UK time), where he allegedly “physically assaulted the driver, and made criminal threats”. Sutherland was later released after posting a $50,000 (£37,300) bond, and is due to appear in court on 2 February. Police said the driver was not injured in the alleged incident at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The LAPD’s Hollywood division is investigating.
