Slate’s EV pickup endures slushy winter testing [Video]

Young American EV startup, Slate Auto, has shared its latest video update, and it’s a chilly one. The company’s development prototypes were recently put through extreme winter testing in Northern Michigan, where, in true Slate fashion, the team had some fun while making great progress. See the video below. I love getting updates from Slate Auto, don’t you? The young EV startup only burst onto the scene a year ago and is ever closer to delivering its flagship “Bare Slate” electric pickup to customers by the end of 2026. That’s a lightning fast turnaround, but its made possible in part by the core of the Slate’s design – simplified and built tough, without any frills, bells or whistles. Hell, the truck doesn’t even have a sound system, although future owners will be able to install a bluetooth speaker in the dash. Anyways, aside from its streamlined design, its Slate’s team that appears to be at the root of its early developmental success. The winter testing video below, posted by Slate this week, is a perfect …

Despite decapitation, Iran’s regime endures: Does Hormuz blockade give Tehran the upper hand?

William Hilderbrandt is pleased to welcome Paul Taylor, Senior Visiting Fellow in the Europe in the World Programme and a member of the Defence/Security EUrope project. He is also a freelance columnist for The Guardian. Amid the Strait of Hormuz blockade, Mr. Taylor argues that even overwhelming force cannot guarantee safety when asymmetric tools, such as drones and decentralised command structures, remain effective. At its core, he contends that reopening the Strait is not a technical or logistical challenge, but a political and diplomatic one.  Keywords for this article Source link

‘Our hearts were shaking’: Tehran endures night of heavy Israel, US bombing | US-Israel war on Iran News

Tehran, Iran – The Iranian capital has experienced one of its most intense nights of bombardment by the United States and Israel since the start of the war 10 days ago as numerous areas of the sprawling city have been hit to devastating effect. Warplanes flew at low altitudes over Tehran overnight into Tuesday, dropping dozens of heavy explosives that shook neighbourhoods across the city of more than 10 million people and frightened residents who have remained in their homes despite the danger. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday would be “our most intense day of strikes inside Iran”. Sima*, a 38-year-old who lives with her family in western Tehran, said of the overnight strikes: “It felt like tens of fighter jets were flying right above our heads for 15 minutes straight at first, then a few minutes of pause before the next rounds of strikes came in.” …

Why Michelangelo’s ‘Last Judgment’ endures

Why Michelangelo’s ‘Last Judgment’ endures

(The Conversation) — Michelangelo’s fresco of “The Last Judgment,” covering the wall behind the altar of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, is being restored. The work, which started on Feb. 1, 2026, is expected to continue for three months. The Sistine Chapel is one of the great masterpieces of Renaissance art. As the setting where the College of Cardinals of the Catholic Church meets to elect a new pope, it was decorated by the most prestigious painters of the day. In 1480, Pope Sixtus IV commissioned Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino and Cosimo Rosselli to paint the walls. On the south are six scenes of the “Life of Moses,” and across on the north are six scenes of the “Life of Christ.” In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling. The theme is the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. The images show God creating the world through the story of Noah, who was directed by God to shelter humans and animals on an ark during the …

“Fargo” at 30: How “Minnesota nice” endures amid violence and unrest

“Fargo” at 30: How “Minnesota nice” endures amid violence and unrest

In the 30 years since its initial theatrical release, Joel and Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller, “Fargo,” has become so synonymous with Frances McDormand’s Oscar-winning lead performance that it’s startling to remember McDormand doesn’t appear until about halfway through the film. As the blunt but sweet small-town police chief, Marge Gunderson, McDormand shows up only when the audience is up to their eyeballs in snowy subterfuge. First, the Coens submerge us headfirst into the cold netherworld of a Minnesota winter, where criminals hope that a dusting of fresh, frosty powder will cover their tracks. Despite her occupation, Marge embodies the spirit of “Minnesota nice” — the phrase used to describe the overly polite, friendly and even-tempered manner of Minnesota residents. Car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is up to his eyeballs in bad loans. When he’s not strong-arming unsuspecting customers into hidden upcharges for their cars, he’s trying to gain some control in his meager, unsatisfied life. Jerry uses his “you-betcha” Midwestern accent to disguise his discontent, but beneath his charlatan smile lurks a rotten, …

US-Canada rivalry endures in women’s ice hockey as new challengers emerge

US-Canada rivalry endures in women’s ice hockey as new challengers emerge

MILAN, Feb 3 : Since its introduction to the Olympics, women’s ice hockey has been one of the more predictable events, with Canada and the U.S. routinely renewing their rivalry in the final, but their dominance could come under threat and all thanks to North America’s own professional league. The launch of the PWHL in 2024 has raised standards across women’s hockey, giving elite players regular high-level competition and accelerating the development of national programmes beyond the traditional North American powerhouses. Canada have won five of the seven gold medals to date, with the U.S. claiming the other two. The only time the pair did not contest the final was when Sweden took silver in 2006, the last time Italy hosted the Games. The Canadians come in as champions, but the United States will fancy their chances of redemption given the recent form between the two. The U.S. are on a six-match winning streak against their neighbours, stretching back to last year’s World Championship where they defeated Canada twice, including in the final. More recently, …

FEDERICO PARRA/AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption FEDERICO PARRA/AFP via Getty Images BOGOTA, Colombia — The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. special forces has raised hopes of a democratic opening in the South American country. But so far, there’s been no “Venezuelan Spring.” That’s, in part, because Diosdado Cabello, Maduro’s most hardline enforcer, remains in power under interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who took over following Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces. In the hours after the U.S. operation, Cabello, who is Venezuela’s Interior Minister, appeared on the streets in Caracas wearing a helmet and flak jacket. He condemned the U.S. operation as a “cowardly attack” and urged Venezuelans not to cooperate with what he called a “terrorist enemy.” Standing alongside armed security forces, Cabello called on supporters to mobilize to defend Venezuela’s sovereignty and warned opponents that those perceived …
