I replaced my entire streaming setup with a device and free apps

I replaced my entire streaming setup with a $30 device and free apps

I spent the holidays overseas, with no access to my regular paid subscription services, and to be honest, I didn’t feel like I missed them all that much. Sure, it was nice to come home and catch up on my favorite shows, but it got me thinking about how much time and money I spend on streaming TV and how often I experience “burnout” from having too much content at my fingertips. I wasn’t prepared to stop streaming TV entirely — that would be unthinkable — but I wanted to reach a happy medium that would allow me to dedicate more time to hobbies and interests and save some cash on the side. The answer lay in my trusty Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, which I purchased for the bargain price of just $29.99, as it would give me access to a range of high-quality free apps without paying for subscriptions. Related Why I Stopped Using My TV’s Built-in Apps and Bought a Streaming Box Instead Suddenly I don’t feel so frustrated anymore, and I …

Salesforce launches Headless 360 to turn its entire platform into infrastructure for AI agents

Salesforce launches Headless 360 to turn its entire platform into infrastructure for AI agents

Salesforce on Wednesday unveiled the most ambitious architectural transformation in its 27-year history, introducing “Headless 360” — a sweeping initiative that exposes every capability in its platform as an API, MCP tool, or CLI command so AI agents can operate the entire system without ever opening a browser. The announcement, made at the company’s annual TDX developer conference in San Francisco, ships more than 100 new tools and skills immediately available to developers. It marks a decisive response to the existential question hanging over enterprise software: In a world where AI agents can reason, plan, and execute, does a company still need a CRM with a graphical interface? Salesforce’s answer: No — and that’s exactly the point. “We made a decision two and a half years ago: Rebuild Salesforce for agents,” the company said in its announcement. “Instead of burying capabilities behind a UI, expose them so the entire platform will be programmable and accessible from anywhere.” The timing is anything but coincidental. Salesforce finds itself navigating one of the most turbulent periods in enterprise …

I built my entire workshop around Ryobi ONE+, and it just works

I built my entire workshop around Ryobi ONE+, and it just works

Ryobi has carried a budget stigma for as long as I can remember. Walk into any Home Depot and you’ll find the green-and-black tools in the affordable section, quietly implying they’re what you buy when you can’t justify spending more. I bought into that framing for years — picking up a Ryobi tool when I needed something fast and half-expecting to outgrow it. That was before I built out a full ONE+ 18V collection and actually put the platform through consistent use. Ryobi tools are considerably stronger than their reputation suggests, and for most homeowners, dismissing them outright is the more expensive choice. The battery platform is the whole product Every tool you add costs less than the one before it The ONE+ platform has been around since 1996, and the core premise has stayed the same: one 18V battery format that works across every tool in the lineup, regardless of when you bought it. That sounds like standard marketing language until you actually own four or five packs and start adding tools. Bare tool …

Usually, Young People Embrace New Technology. Gen Z’s Attitude Toward AI Should Worry the Entire Tech Industry

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Traditionally, young people have eagerly embraced hot new technologies — think Sony’s Walkman, Apple’s iPhone, or Napster — and become major drivers of their success in the workplace and society. And if they spurn a new product — remember Microsoft’s Zune, Google+, or Amazon’s Fire Phone? — it’s often a very bad sign. That leads us to a new survey from Gallup, GSV Ventures and the Walton Family Foundation that examined Gen Z’s attitudes towards AI, a category the tech industry is currently pushing as if its life depended on it — and found that young people are deeply ambivalent about it, with 48 percent saying that the risks of AI in the workforce outweigh its benefits and a staggering 80 percent saying that using it as a shortcut makes learning more difficult. Most damning is Zoomers’ trajectory. Excitement about AI dropped 14 percent since last year and hopefulness fell by nine percent, while the proportion of young …

‘Everything is gone’: Israel destroys entire villages in Lebanon | Lebanon

The Israeli military has demolished entire villages as part of its invasion of south Lebanon, rigging homes with explosives and razing them to the ground in massive remote detonations. The Guardian reviewed three videos posted by the Israeli military and on social media, which showed Israel carrying out mass detonations in the villages of Taybeh, Naqoura and Deir Seryan along the Israel-Lebanon border. Lebanese media has reported more mass detonations in other border villages, but satellite imagery was not readily available to verify these claims. The demolitions came after Israel’s minister of defence, Israel Katz, called for the destruction of “all houses” in border villages “in accordance with the model used in Rafah and Beit Hanoun in Gaza” to stop threats to communities in northern Israel. The Israeli military destroyed 90% of homes in Rafah, in south Gaza. The tactic of mass destruction of homes in Gaza, where Israel has been accused of committing genocide, was described as domicide by academics, a strategy that is used to systematically destroy and damage civilian housing to render …

The Entire State of Maine Is Poised to Ban New Data Centers

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Data centers designed to power immensely resource-intensive AI models have turned into a major point of contention. The sweeping facilities have proven immensely unpopular, particularly in rural areas, where they’ve been accused of causing electricity prices to spike. Companies are spending billions of dollars on the computing infrastructure, despite ongoing concerns over environmental effects and power grid stability. Now, new legislation in Maine is expected to freeze the construction of new data centers that consume at least 20 megawatts — enough to power about 15,000 homes — in the state until at least November 2027, as the Wall Street Journal reports, pending environmental and grid assessments. The bill was passed by the Maine House of Representatives last month and is expected to pass in the Senate as well, which would make Maine the first state in the country to ban new data centers. The unprecedented move highlights growing bipartisan political fallout over the AI hype and consequent construction …

I replaced my entire Windows workflow with Linux apps — and only hit one wall

I replaced my entire Windows workflow with Linux apps — and only hit one wall

Over the past few months, I’ve been using Ubuntu on my secondary devices. I use it for personal projects, testing self-hosted apps, and helping friends set up machines where all they need is a browser, email, and YouTube. It’s not my primary OS, but I spend enough time in it that I need my everyday tools to work. The biggest criticism I hear about Linux is that installing and using programs is painful compared to Windows. And honestly, there’s truth to that. You’re dealing with Flatpaks, Snaps, AppImages, package managers, and sometimes compiling from source just to get a single app running. On Windows, you download an .exe and double-click it to install the app. But when it comes to replacing core productivity apps, I was surprised by how well Linux alternatives held up. I found solid replacements for almost everything in my Windows workflow, with one exception that genuinely broke things. AI Forces College Professor to Get Typewriters for Entire Class

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Meme wisdom holds that modern problems require modern solutions, but what peddlers of this internet adage failed to consider is that an antiquated and possibly impractical approach could be loads more fun. We present Grit Matthias Phelps, a German language instructor at Cornell University who’s rebelling against a world gone mad with AI fever and pervasive brainrot by compelling students to use typewriters in class, the Associated Press reports. It’s an exercise she only conducts once a semester, but seems to leave a lasting impression on her pupils. Suddenly, they’re forced to depend not on screens, but on themselves and their classmates. The closest thing they hear to an attention-span destroying notification is the ding of the typewriter bell letting them know that they only have a few characters left on a line. “It dawned on me that the difference with typing on a typewriter is not just how you interact with the typewriter, but how you interact …
