How a Volcanic Eruption Helped Unleash the Black Death in Europe in 1347

How a Volcanic Eruption Helped Unleash the Black Death in Europe in 1347

The flap of a butterfly’s wings on one side of the world can cause a hurricane on the other, or so they say. If we take it a bit too literally, that old observation may make us wonder what a hurricane can cause. Or if not a hurricane, how about another kind of large-scale natural disaster? If new findings by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe are to be believed, a volcano’s eruption helped lead to the outbreak and spread of the Black Death across Europe in the fourteenth century. In the video above, British history and environmental science specialist Paul Whitewick explains the evidence on a visit to one of the abandoned medieval villages stricken by that plague. As Cambridge’s Sarah Collins writes, “the evidence suggests that a volcanic eruption — or cluster of eruptions — around 1345 caused annual temperatures to drop for consecutive years due to the haze from volcanic ash and gases, which in turn caused crops to fail …

Pompeii Uses AI to Recreate Man Who Died in Vesuvius Eruption

In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, sending a cloud of ash and hot gas sweeping through the ancient Roman town of Pompei. The writer Pliny the Younger—whose uncle, Pliny the Elder, died in the eruption—watched the catastrophe unfold from a vantage point across the Bay of Naples, later describing how inhabitants had tied pillows over their heads to protect themselves from falling debris and carried torches to find their way through the darkness. In 2024, archeologists discovered the skeletons of two of the volcano’s victims, likely killed as they tried to reach the sea, just outside Pompeii’s southern gates. The first skeleton was of a young man, who is thought to have died in a pyroclastic surge—a rush of superheated gas and hot ash that can literally boil blood. Related Articles In an eerie echo of Pliny the Younger’s account, the second skeleton, that of a somewhat older man, was found with a terracotta bowl near his head. According to researchers, who published their findings on April 27 in the journal Scavi di Pompei, he …

Archaeologists at Pompeii Use AI to Reconstruct the Face of a Man Killed in the Volcano’s Eruption

ROME (AP) — Archaeologists and researchers at the ancient Roman site of Pompeii have used artificial intelligence for the first time to digitally reconstruct the face of a man killed in the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that smothered the city, offering a new way to understand one of history’s most famous natural disasters. The digital portrait represents a man whose remains, along with those of another person, were discovered as they attempted to flee the city toward the coast of what is now Italy during the volcanic eruption. Researchers believe the man died early in the disaster, during a heavy fall of volcanic debris. The reconstruction was developed by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which announced on its website that it was done in collaboration with the University of Padua and based on archaeological survey data from excavations near the Porta Stabia necropolis, just outside the walls of the ancient city. The announcement shows the AI-generated illustration of what the man could have looked like. He is shown running along a rough, debris-covered road, …

Free Verse, Surviving a Volcanic Eruption, High Fantasy, and More New YA Books for March 11, 2026

This content contains affiliate links. When you buy through these links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Nearly every week since about this time last year, I’ve been able to note that there’s at least one new YA book being simultaneously published in paperback and in hardcover. That trend continues this week, with two titles falling into this category. It’s a welcomed sight, especially since the idea of YA getting a revived mass market paperback is pretty much dead. The decision to publish a book simultaneously is a sign that the book is being explicitly targeted to teen readers, as opposed to gatekeepers who will help ferry the book into the hands of teens. Most teens don’t have the cash to spend on a new hardcover; even the trade paperback pushes the teen budget, as some come in at nearly $16 (see here and here). But providing options is one big step in accessibility. All that said, we’ve got another banger of a release week, with an array of titles across genres. Whether you’re looking …

Russian volcano spews ash miles into the air as major eruption begins | World | News

A new volcano eruption shook Russia today. The Bezymyanny volcano in Kamchatka, a peninsula in the country’s far eastern area, threw a column of ash over three miles into the air, local media reports. The huge ash plume extends a whopping 33.5 miles northeast, according to scientists. This could disrupt air travel in and around the surrounding areas. A orange aviation hazard code is now in force, only yesterday scientists warned of a possible explosive eruption. Bezymyanny, which had been considered extinct until 1955, last erupted on April 7 2023, with strong explosive activity and an ash plume rising to around 7.4 miles. At its peak, the ash cloud was visible over a wide area, with satellite images showing it extending hundreds of kilometers. Explosions were loud enough to be heard up to 12 miles away, and the sounds persisted for around 90 minutes. The volcano is a lava-dome stratovolcano, this means its eruptive behavior often involves the growth of a dome, followed by collapse of hot dome material, which can trigger a explosive ash-producing …
