Adalberto Roque | Afp | Getty Images The Kremlin on Thursday said that the situation in fuel-starved Cuba is intensifying after a deadly incident with a U.S.-registered speedboat off the coast of the Caribbean island. “We see that the situation around Cuba is escalating,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti. “The most important thing is the humanitarian component. Of course, the humanitarian issues of Cuban citizens must be resolved, and no one should create obstacles,” Peskov said. Why the student loans row is escalating and what it means for graduates | Student finance

Pressure is building on the government to reform the student loans system, with politicians and campaigners piling in, and a minister conceding there are “problems” with the current set-up. The row seems to be snowballing… It is. During the last few days the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have both outlined what they would do to fix the current “unfair” system, and on Sunday the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, was grilled about what the government would do to help graduates with ballooning debts. Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Arming Rebels in Escalating War of Words

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 15 (Reuters) – Ethiopian police ‌said they had seized thousands of ‌rounds of ammunition sent by Eritrea to rebels in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, an allegation Eritrea dismissed as a falsehood intended to justify starting a war. The charge by Ethiopia’s ‍federal police escalates a feud between Ethiopia and Eritrea, longstanding foes who reached a peace deal in 2018 that has since given way to renewed threats and acrimony. The police said in a statement late on Wednesday they had seized 56,000 rounds of ammunition and arrested two suspects this week in the Amhara region, where Fano rebels have waged an insurgency since 2023.  “The preliminary investigation conducted on the two ‌suspects who were caught red-handed has confirmed that the ammunition was sent by the Shabiya government,” ‌the statement said, using ‍a term for Eritrea’s ruling party.   Eritrea’s Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel told Reuters that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party (PP) was looking for a pretext to attack. “The PP regime is floating false flags to justify the war that it …
