Ethan Hawke has opened up about one of the most emotional moments of his life, walking his daughter Maya Hawke down the aisle, admitting it was “very difficult” not to be overwhelmed on her special day. The actor, 55, shared his heartfelt reaction while attending the Time 100 Gala, reflecting on Maya’s intimate New York City wedding to her longtime partner, Huston, which took place on February 14. Back in 2002, when a then 31-year-old Hawke was nominated for best supporting actor for Training Day, “I don’t think I gave a second’s thought to what I was wearing,” Hawke laughs. “The first time is otherworldly. You feel like you’re in The Hunger Games, because you watch it as a kid and all of a sudden you’re stepping into it. I got to do it with Denzel [Washington], which made it incredibly fun, and he won [best actor], so we all felt like we were part of history.” Hawke has earned four more nominations since then, including best supporting actor for Boyhood (2014), best-adapted-screenplay nods for Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013), and his first best-actor nod for Blue Moon at the 2026 Oscars. Ethan Hawke embraced politics head-on at the Berlin Film Festival on Tuesday ahead of the premiere of his latest movie, The Weight. “Anything that fights fascism, I’m all for it,” the Blue Moon star told a Berlinale presser when asked about the role of “famous artists” during a time when “fascism is on the rise in Europe and the U.S.” Hawke started his response by cautioning “the last place you probably want to look for advice in your spiritual counsel is a bunch of jet-lagged drunk artists talking about their film.” But Hawke then referenced director Padraic McKinley’s historical drama, set in 1930s Oregon and about gold rush greed and survival. “It’s about a group of people who don’t think they have anything in common, who band together to fight institutional greed and malevolence to realize that they have so much more in common, and that’s worth fighting for. An original saga with novelistic roots in Great Depression Americana and classic Westerns, Padraic McKinley’s first feature, The Weight, in theory has a lot going for it — a vivid evocation of the rugged Oregon wilderness in 1933, an atmospheric score, a pair of leads with the requisite gravitas in Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, playing driven men on different sides of the law. The director also sticks some creditable influences on his mood board, William Friedkin’s Sorcerer being the most obvious of them. Aiming to emulate the introspective action-adventure survival thrillers of the 1970s is no bad place to start. But grit, rawness and dirty-realist poetry can be elusive elements to conjure, even in a production that cultivates those qualities with a rough-and-ready feel for the scrappy, sweaty storytelling of another era. But first, official business: Film Independent brought its typically beachside act to the London West Hollywood to host Spirit Award nominees for an airy rooftop brunch.
