Camp Mystic Security Guard Says an Early Evacuation Order Could Have Saved Lives

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The security guard at Camp Mystic the night of last year’s deadly flood acknowledged Wednesday that if a general evacuation order came early in the storm, lives could’ve been saved. Glenn Juenke, who helped move some girls to a two-story building before getting trapped inside a cabin himself, also saved a group of campers when he told them to run to higher ground as flood waters rose. He testified at the end of a three-day hearing in a legal fight between the camp operators, who want to reopen the all-girls Christian Camp this summer, and families of some of the victims who died in the July 4th flood that swept through the Guadalupe River in the predawn hours. Juenke, called as a witness for the camp operators, said it was his decision to tell a group of campers to scramble on foot up a hillside as floodwaters rose, and was not an order from camp directors or authorities. He did not recall camp operators ever training the campers, counselors and staff …

Southern California Wildfire Mostly Contained as Officials Lift Many Evacuation Orders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A smoky wildfire in southern California that broke out a day earlier and prompted evacuation orders was mostly under control Saturday afternoon, fire officials said. Encompassing roughly 6.3 square miles (about 16 square kilometers) in Riverside County, about 64 miles (103 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, the Springs Fire was no longer growing and at least 75% percent contained Saturday, said Terra Fernandez, public safety information specialist for the Riverside County Fire Department. It was 25% contained on Friday. Fire officials also lifted evacuation orders for a large swath of neighborhoods Saturday morning. Fernandez said she expected the rest will be lifted by the end of the day. “It’s pretty much under control,” Fernandez said. The fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds with gusts predicted to get up to 45 mph (72 kph) on Saturday. But winds had “dissipated a bit” since Friday, helping the efforts of fire crews, Fernandez said. Natural equestrian trails around the area also helped firefighters make access to the fire and build effective containment …

Fadhel Madhan/AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Fadhel Madhan/AFP via Getty Images NPR has learned that hundreds of sailors were evacuated back to the United States from their base in Bahrain after the base was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones. In addition to the base in Bahrain, NPR has learned that there have been evacuations at other U.S. military bases in the region, though the exact details are unknown at this point. Bahrain is the home of the Navy’s 5th Fleet, making it a central hub for providing maritime security in the Middle East region, including protecting commercial shipping. The country is an island in the Persian Gulf that sits roughly 124 nautical miles away from the coast of Iran, which makes Bahrain well within range of Iranian drone and missile strikes. Around 8,000 people were stationed at the base in Bahrain before the U.S. attacked Iran on Feb. 28. On the opening …

NASA Astronaut Reveals Terrifying Medical Incident That Caused Evacuation from Space Station

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Earlier this year, NASA announced the first-ever medical evacuation in the International Space Station’s 25 years of continuous human occupation. Within days, the crew of four astronauts boarded their SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on January 15. They were immediately whisked away in a helicopter to the nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, near San Diego, leaving the press with plenty of glaring questions. Last month, 59-year-old retired US Air Force colonel and crew member Mike Fincke publicly identified himself as the one who had fallen ill and triggered the evacuation. Now he’s finally ready to expand on what actually happened — and by all accounts, it sounds like a terrifying experience for both him and his fellow crew members. As the Associated Press reports, Fincke said he suddenly was unable to speak for a period of about 20 minutes while having dinner. Fincke and his fellow crewmates had just ended preparations for …

A Burning Smell Forces Newark Airport Control Tower Evacuation, Briefly Halting Flights

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Arrivals and departures were temporarily paused at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Monday morning after air traffic controllers evacuated the tower due to a burning smell coming from an elevator, the Federal Aviation Administration said. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the issue, and the agency said it was determined that no fire had occurred. The delay lasted less than an hour, and no injuries were reported. During the pause, FAA staff relocated to a backup tower at the airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. They later returned to the primary tower. Earlier this month, four airports serving Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Richmond, Virginia, halted all flights for over an hour because of a strong chemical smell that was impeding air traffic controllers. Federal Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the source of the strong odor was traced to a circuit board that overheated and was replaced. The temporary pause at Newark Liberty was not related to a fatal …
