President Trump Signs Order Intended to Stabilize College Sports, Threatens Lost Federal Funding

President Donald Trump tried to put some teeth into his latest attempt to save college sports. The threat of cutting funding to cash-starved schools that don’t comply is real, even if the stricter rules Trump wants to come out of the executive order he signed Friday could take a while to figure out. In the order signed hours before the women’s Final Four tipped off one of the biggest weekends in college sports, Trump went after eligibility rules, transfers and the spiraling costs associated with an industry that now pays its players millions of dollars per year. He called on federal agencies to ensure schools are following the rules and threatened to choke off federal grants and funding — a similar approach his administration has taken to force universities around the country to alter policies involving diversity, equity and inclusion, transgender rights and even the kinds of classes they offer. In some ways, forcing those changes might seem like child’s play compared to making major changes to college sports. The NCAA, the newly created College …

Trump Signs Executive Order to Pay TSA After Funding Bill Collapses in Congress

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday afternoon that should pay TSA employees next week. Trump’s action came after a Homeland Security funding measure collapsed in Congress. The measure passed the Senate early Friday morning but was swiftly rejected by House Republicans. TSA workers were set to miss a second consecutive paycheck Friday. TSA officer absentee rate hit a record Thursday, DHS says The Department of Homeland Security says the daily absentee rate for TSA officers scheduled to work on Thursday reached 11.83%, the highest level since the DHS shutdown started on Feb. 14. The department says 33.6% of scheduled officers missed work at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and 37.4% at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport. “I want to thank President Trump for his leadership in finding a way to pay our TSA officers to end this chaos at our airports,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said. TSA officers must be confident they’re going to keep getting paid before the delays will end The delays and long security lines may …

Treasury Department Terminates Union Contracts for IRS and Bureau of the Fiscal Service Workers

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department has terminated its collective bargaining agreement with unionized workers employed at the Internal Revenue Service, the agency said Friday, in an escalation of President Donald Trump ’s push to exert more control over the federal workforce. The union contract for the Bureau of the Fiscal Service was also terminated this week, according to two people familiar with the decision. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media. Workers at the IRS and the fiscal service bureau, which processes payments for the government, are represented by the National Treasury Employees Union. They were informed by agency leadership that Treasury terminated their collective bargaining agreements, using an executive order President Donald Trump signed last March as the authority for the terminations. In a letter to IRS workers Friday, viewed by The Associated Press, IRS Chief Human Capital Officer Alex Kweskin told employees the move “deepens our commitment of operating as one IRS, a collaborative team focused on serving American taxpayers.” The …

EPA Administrator Outlines Trump’s Plan to Speed up Rebuilding of Homes Destroyed by LA Wildfires

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Trump administration officials traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday to outline the president’s plan to override state and local rules and speed up the permitting process for reconstruction of tens of thousands of homes destroyed by last year’s wildfires. Last week the president signed an executive order that the White House promised would allow homeowners to rebuild without contending with “unnecessary, duplicative, or obstructive” requirements. The plan is to allow federal loan recipients to “self-certify” that they meet all state and local building requirements if their permits aren’t approved within 60 days, Trump’s goal is to help homeowners cut through bureaucratic red tape and “tear through every single obstacle” that’s slowing rebuilding, said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, whom Trump tapped to oversee the effort. His staff will examine why over 1,000 permit applications have been returned to residents seeking to rebuild, Zeldin said during a Wednesday news conference after meeting with residents in Pacific Palisades, where the first of the two infernos erupted in January 2025. “We want …

Judge Blocks Additional Citizenship Provisions in Latest Setback to Trump’s Election Executive Order

Judge Blocks Additional Citizenship Provisions in Latest Setback to Trump’s Election Executive Order

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge on Friday blocked certain federal agencies from requesting citizenship status when distributing voter registration forms, the latest blow to a wide-ranging executive order on elections President Donald Trump signed last year. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington ruled that the Constitution’s separation of powers, giving states and to an extent Congress authority over setting election rules, are at the heart of the case. “Put simply, our Constitution does not allow the President to impose unilateral changes to federal election procedures,” wrote the judge, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton. Specifically, Kollar-Kotelly permanently blocked two provisions of the executive order that sought to impose proof-of-citizenship rules. Her decision said agencies will not be allowed to “assess citizenship” before providing a federal voter registration form to people enrolling in public assistance programs. It also said the Secretary of Defense cannot require documentary proof of citizenship when military personnel register to vote or request ballots. “Our democracy works best when all Americans can participate, including members of our military …
