Jury Deliberating in Corruption Trial of Ex-FirstEnergy Executives Accused of .3 Million Bribe

Jury Deliberating in Corruption Trial of Ex-FirstEnergy Executives Accused of $4.3 Million Bribe

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jurors in Akron began deliberating Tuesday in the corruption trial of two fired FirstEnergy Corp. executives charged for their alleged roles in a sweeping $60 million bribery scheme that resulted in a lucrative bailout of two affiliated nuclear plants. During closing arguments that spanned two days, prosecutors drove home their argument that Jones and Dowling purposely corrupted Public Utilities Commission of Ohio chair-to-be Sam Randazzo for their own benefit. They said securing Randazzo’s help to land coveted legislative and regulatory favors bolstered the Akron-based utility giant’s bottom line, which was tied directly to the financial compensation of Jones and Dowling. “They rigged a process that was supposed to be fair for everyone. Their corruption here was using power, influence and money for personal and corporate greed,” Special Assistant Attorney General Matthew Meyer told jurors Monday. “By cleverly structuring the timing and labels of their payoff to Sam Randazzo, these two captains of industry behaved like they were untouchable.” The defense called that argument ridiculous, reiterating their position that the payment to …

Hungarian opposition picks top business executives to dismantle Orbán’s rule – POLITICO

Hungarian opposition picks top business executives to dismantle Orbán’s rule – POLITICO

Zoltán Tarr, the No. 2 in Tisza, said the priority was to find “good managers” who could implement that change. He explained that another advantage of recruiting from corporate boardrooms — rather than hiring political veterans — was that the new ministers would not be tainted by previous government experience that would compromise their ability to slash back Orbán’s role in the state. “We mostly go to the business world to find names because we have certain rules. We cannot deal with people with certain government ‘baggage.’ And that really limits the possibilities for us,” he told POLITICO in an interview. Tarr added that trying to regain access to Hungary’s currently frozen EU funds would also require skills familiar to executives. “There will be a pragmatic relation with Ursula von der Leyen and Brussels … it’s like business, but mutually beneficial, for Hungary and the EU, and a keeping-your-word kind of business,” he said. So far, only five names for a potential Cabinet have been confirmed, apart from leader Magyar, who would be prime minister. …

ZDNET’s key takeaways Key IT roles are being scaled back and ramped up for the AI era.  IT operations, software development, and cybersecurity are seeing both cuts and gains. A ‘reorganization of work’ is reshaping job roles.  A new industry survey shows a range of cuts across several IT job categories — but also a boost in hiring for the same types of positions.   The survey of 2,050 executives across the globe, released by Snowflake, reveals job losses due to AI, while also showing that the same occupations are benefiting from the AI trend. For example, 40% of executives surveyed report cuts to IT operations due to automation, but 56% report additional hiring for these positions.  Another 26% are seeing cuts in software development jobs, but 37% also report increased hiring. For data analysts, the split is 37% to 37%. Also: Job hunting? 5 ways you can stand out in 2026 – and beat AI screening tools For jobs outside of IT, the picture is …

How Meta Executives Talked About Child Safety Behind the Scenes

How Meta Executives Talked About Child Safety Behind the Scenes

Not so long ago, Mark Zuckerberg was working in overdrive to convince the world that his company was doing everything it could to protect children. In 2021, he posted a note to his personal Facebook page, writing that he had “spent a lot of time reflecting” on the types of experiences he would want his daughters, then 4 and 5 years old, to have online. “It’s very important to me that everything we build is safe and good for kids,” he wrote, emphasizing that the company absolutely does not “prioritize profit over safety and well-being.” But documents recently viewed by The Atlantic show that behind the scenes, the company now known as Meta was divided on whether protecting kids should take precedence over user growth and engagement. For years, the company only incrementally rolled out restrictive safety features, even as its own staff detailed the risks its platforms posed to children. Take, for example, a technical problem that affected the company’s systems in November 2020. This issue limited Meta’s ability to track bad actors, at …

SEC charges Lottery.com and former executives for alleged financial fraud

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has brought forward charges against Lottery.com, Inc. (Lottery.com) and former senior figures for alleged breaches of financial fraud regulations. Those charged include Lawrence Anthony DiMatteo, a former CEO of Lottery.com and former company executives Matthew Clemenson and Ryan Dickinson. Another individual highlighted by the SEC investigation is Vadim Komissarov, CEO of a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), Trident Acquisitions Corp. SEC cracks down on Lottery.com The SEC case was brought in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and the regulator published a brief missive outlining the allegations. According to the complaint, Komissarov is alleged to have “planned and executed a revenue scam” with DiMatteo, Clemenson, and Dickinson, which allegedly violated Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933 and Sections 10(b) and 14(a) of the Exchange Act of 1934, along with related SEC rules. Customer data was central to the scam charges and involved what the regulator calls “useless customer data” that was then cycled through a number of multi-million-dollar transactions. The initial fraud complaint …

AI Adoption Isn’t Driven by Executives, But by Workers: What 100K Users Reveal

AI Adoption Isn’t Driven by Executives, But by Workers: What 100K Users Reveal

The story that’s often told about AI in business is how it’s a big boss decision, or part of a massive tech rollout. But a comprehensive study by Recon Analytics, with support from analysts Roger Entner and Joe Salesky, suggests otherwise. Their study, drawing from over 100,000 respondents, shows the truth is much simpler: The AI adoption shift is being driven by the people who actually use it every day. An Employee-Led Surge This dynamic shift shows that about 61 percent of workers say their peers, not a company mandate, influenced them to adopt AI. This represents the largest bottom-up technology shift since the advent of mobile. And this finding is important because it shifts the conversation: AI isn’t just a mandatory corporate tool. It’s helping individuals work smarter, not harder. Recon Analytics found that 40.8 percent of knowledge workers now use AI tools at work, routinely rating their productivity gains between 7 and 8 out of 10 for tasks like writing, brainstorming, and analysis. When you look at the entire workforce, this translates to …
