Some iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air Users Experiencing a Charging Issue

Earlier this week, 9to5Mac‘s Benjamin Mayo reported on an apparent charging issue affecting at least some of Apple’s latest iPhone models. In short, Mayo said that when he attempted to charge his iPhone Air with a USB-C cable just seconds after the device ran out of battery, it failed to turn on and did not display the usual red battery icon that indicates charging is occurring. Mayo subsequently realized that several users have posted about this issue across websites such as Reddit and iFixit Answers, but it is unclear what the root cause is or how widespread it is. Apple has yet to publicly comment on the matter, and the issue does not appear to be fixed in the latest iOS 26.4.1 and iOS 26.4.2 software releases. As far as I can tell, I also experienced this issue with my iPhone 17 Pro Max earlier this month. While staying at a hotel, I accidentally forgot to charge the device one night, leading it to shut off on me when I woke up the next morning. …

Beyond the Numbers: What LGBTQ+ Students Are Really Experiencing in Schools

Beyond the Numbers: What LGBTQ+ Students Are Really Experiencing in Schools

In classrooms across the United States, LGBTQ+ students are navigating something far more complex than assignments and attendance. They are navigating safety, identity, belonging and, increasingly, a political climate that shapes all three. The latest National School Climate Survey from GLSEN offers a sobering picture. Only one in three LGBTQ+ students report that they frequently or often look forward to school. Nearly two-thirds say they feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. For many students, that sense of unease is not occasional. It is built into their daily routines – influencing where they walk, who they talk to and how visible they allow themselves to be. And yet, to reduce these students to statistics alone would miss something essential. “Research is about storytelling,” said Shweta Moorthy, GLSEN’s Director of Research and Best Practices, during a recent interview. “The way to tell meaningful stories is to ensure that both the quantitative and qualitative data are moving hand in hand.” That idea – that data should reflect lived experience, not flatten it – is …

The world economy is experiencing the most severe oil shock in decades. The worst could still be on the way.

Yet even those new highs could quickly be eclipsed if the conflict in the Middle East remains unsettled, analysts say. In other words, current prices still do not reflect the extent of shortages a prolonged conflict portends. “It’s clear to me that if this crisis lasts more than three or four months, it becomes a systemic problem for the world,” Patrick Pouyanné, chief executive officer of the oil giant Total, said at a global energy conference in Houston this month, according to Bloomberg News. The most visible choke point for oil supply from the Persian Gulf continues to be the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transited before Feb. 28. Vessel traffic through the strait remains at a trickle as Iran continues to leverage tight control over the passageway to extract concessions from the U.S. From over 100 vessels per day before the conflict, daily traffic through the strait now totals fewer than five ships, according to data from the International Monetary Fund. What neurodivergence can teach us about the different ways of experiencing joy

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore When people talk about autism, they often think about a child who is different and may be distressed by their surroundings. Or if the conversation moves beyond childhood, the focus might be about an autistic adult with analytical superpowers, such as The Good Doctor or Patience, who still has difficulty with their surroundings and fitting in with colleagues. People rarely mention autistic joy. However, a 2024 study found that most autistic people often experience joy, with one participant in that study noting: “Lining things up is fun because it’s pleasurable. It’s odd that [non-autistic people] don’t understand it. Sorting/organising is one of the deepest pleasures in life, as intense/as sought after as delicious food.” Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference. Autistic people are often, incorrectly, viewed as lacking in empathy. This may be because autistic people often have more muted facial expressions. …

Iran’s biggest centres of protest are also experiencing extreme pollution and water shortages

Iran’s biggest centres of protest are also experiencing extreme pollution and water shortages

Iran’s current wave of protests is often interpreted as having been sparked by inflation, currency collapse, corruption and repression. These explanations are not wrong, but they are incomplete. Beneath the country’s political and economic crisis lies a more destabilising force that is still largely missing from international analysis: environmental breakdown. Iran is experiencing not one environmental crisis but the convergence of several: water shortages, land subsidence, air pollution and energy failure. All added together, life is a struggle for survival. So when citizens protest today, they are not only resisting authoritarian governance. They are responding to a state that can no longer reliably provide the most basic forms of security: water to drink, air to breathe, land to stand on, and electricity to carry on their daily lives. From 2003-2019, Iran lost an estimated 211 cubic kilometres of groundwater, or twice its annual water consumption, leaving the country facing water bankruptcy. Excessive pumping – driven by agricultural expansion, energy subsidies and weak regulation – has caused land subsidence rates of up to 30cm per year, …

People Who Go Off GLP-1s Are Experiencing a Sudden and Terrible Hunger

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist drugs, like the popular weight-loss jabs Wegovy and Ozempic, have proven to be immensely effective. Beyond allowing patients to significantly reduce their weight, they’ve been shown to have a constellation of other health benefits, like lowering the risk of heart disease and staving off diabetic kidney disease, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. But the harsh reality of what happens when monthly injections stop is raising a grim wrinkle: will patients ever be able to stop taking these extremely expensive drugs, or are they signing onto a lifetime habit they won’t be able to break without suffering severe consequences? A new study led by researchers at the University of Oxford, which reviewed 37 existing weight loss medication studies involving over 9,000 participants, has found that patients who stopped taking GLP-1 weight-loss medications regained weight four times as fast as those who used alternative behavioral programs, like diets and physical activity. On average, participants returned to their original weight just 1.7 years after stopping the medication. Patients who went off the drugs told the …
