Casely MagSafe-Compatible Power Banks Recalled Again After Fire-Related Death and In-Flight Explosion

iPhone accessory maker Casely reissued a recall for its faulty Power Pod wireless power bank (via The Verge) after one of the affected units resulted in the death of a 75-year-old woman and another exploded on a plane. Casely first issued the recall in April 2025 through the Consumer Product Safety Commission. At that time, the company said that the power banks could overheat and ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. A total of 51 people had reported incidents where the battery overheated, expanded, or caught fire, and there were six minor burn injuries. Since then, there have been an additional 28 reports, including two serious incidents. In August 2024, a woman in New Jersey was charging her phone with a Casely power bank on her lap, and it caught fire and exploded. She had second- and third-degree burns, and later died from complications from her injuries. In February 2026, a 47-year-old woman was charging her cell phone with the power bank on an airplane when it caught fire and exploded, resulting …

We may have seen a ‘dirty fireball’ star explosion for the first time

We may have seen a ‘dirty fireball’ star explosion for the first time

Dying stars can emit a powerful jet of radiation, as seen in an artist’s impression Stocktrek Images, Inc./Alamy Astronomers think they have seen a type of explosion produced by a dying star called a dirty fireball for the first time, and it could help us understand how massive stars die. When a massive star runs out of fuel, it can collapse and explode in several ways. If a black hole is produced in the collapse, an extremely powerful jet of radiation can burst through the star, producing a flash of high-energy light called a gamma ray burst. These bursts are among the most powerful explosions in the universe and can emit energy equivalent to the total lifetime output of smaller stars, such as the sun, in a single beam. But astronomers still don’t know exactly how this process works or how variations between different massive stars affect the jet. Physicists have hypothesised that we might see something different if the jet somehow gets contaminated with heavier matter from the star, such as protons and neutrons. …

Explosion rocks Amsterdam Jewish school in ‘cowardly act of aggression’ | World | News

A Jewish school was rocked by an explosion in the early hours of Saturday. The incident occured in Amsterdam with police and fire officials quickly responding to the incident. The city’s mayor Femke Halsema said she believed the blast was a “deliberate attack against the Jewish community”. However, no injuries have been reported. Police are examining camera footage that appears to show the individual igniting the explosive device. Ms Halsema said: “This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community. Jewish people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable.” The Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right has claimed responsibility for the attack, marking the fourth incident in Europe they have said they carried out this week. The group released a video online showing a person setting a fire that then explodes before driving away, though officials have not verified whether the footage is genuine or whether the group was actually involved. Security around Jewish schools and community institutions has been tightened even further, following recent attacks on synagogues …

Explosion shakes Tehran amid state-organised rally after Israeli warning

A large explosion rocked a central square in Iran’s capital where thousands were gathered Friday for an annual state-organized rally to support the Palestinians and call for Israel’s demise. Israel had warned that it would target the area in central Tehran. There were no reports of casualties. But the decision to proceed with the mass demonstration that was attended by some senior government officials, and Israel’s threat to target the area, underscored the fierce determination on both sides nearly two weeks into a war that has rattled the global economy and shows no sign of letting up. Newborn magnetar offers rare evidence of Einstein’s relativity in a stellar explosion

Newborn magnetar offers rare evidence of Einstein’s relativity in a stellar explosion

The light did not fade the way it was supposed to. After blazing into view about a billion light-years from Earth, the supernova known as SN 2024afav settled into something stranger. Its brightness rose, peaked, and then began to dip in a series of rhythmic bumps. Each pulse came a little faster than the one before it, like a chirp tightening in pitch. That unusual pattern has now given astronomers what they say is their clearest evidence yet that some of the universe’s brightest stellar explosions are powered by newborn magnetars, dense neutron stars with extreme magnetic fields and rapid spin rates. The results, published in Nature, also point to a role for Einstein’s general theory of relativity in shaping the light from a supernova for the first time. “The idea that magnetars are involved has seemed to have a magical aspect for theoretical astronomers,” stated Dan Kasen, a UC Berkeley physicist. “However, with this evidence, we can now conclude with certainty that there is, indeed, a relevant and substantial magnetar component. The supernova’s light …
